Favourite Bob Geldof solo track
Permalink

Does anybody have an all time favourite Bob Geldof solo track, and for what reason(optional!)

Two Geldof tracks in particular seem to just frequently pop into my head, One For You and My Hippy Angel, so those two songs are well up there in being favourites. Another high ranker is Scream In Vain.

I remember doing a Geldof top ten a while back, but was thinking lately about the idea of just one all time favourite. Of course it is an impossible task, like all music lists and choosing one song is asking a lot. Tossing a coin I'll go for One For Me. It came after dreadful time in Bobs life and I always remember Geldof 'performing' the song (actually barely whispering) on an Irish tv programme back in 2001, such was the turmoil in his life back at that time.

For me, The Great Song of Indifference is head and shoulders above everything else.  Systematic Six-Pack, Here's To You, $6,000,000 Loser and Scream in Vain are all very good, and a few more are acceptable.  Sadly I find the majority pretty poor.

Two very good choices Ian. I don't know if you have heard the French version of Pale White Girls, from the Geldof anthology. It in my opinion is even better than the original mix. My Birthday Suit is also way up there , a song about ageing and loss,  showing Geldof at his most vulnerable. The lyrics are achingly sad, when you read them.

I reckon overall The Great Song Of Indifference is the most well liked song, because it is so lively and upbeat. A Rose At Night is one of my favourites too. Dig A Ditch and Hotel 75 are for me the most high octane, lively songs that sound more like Rats songs, and Talk Me Up is sort of Rats like too, being none the worst for that.

Anyway it was good to hear what people think, when just pared down to one or two essential tracks.

Clearly not qualified to vote as I've only got last album (as kindly donated by Noel) and knowledge of a few tracks from live shows and singles.

That said, I really like To Live in Love. Good tune and lyrics; mellow, bit haunting, and thought provoking.

Would be interested to know how that one features for fans of entire catalogue.

To be honest Suss To Live In Love was one of the songs I like least on the album but sometimes songs have a funny way of becoming relevant in ones life, a lyric will suddenly become meaningful and ones opinion of a particular song can be turned on its head.

I have a kinder opinion of Blow now, but for a long time  I though it was awful. Reading the lyrics helped to make more sense and now I think it's good enough, from originally nearly hating it.

I would have included two other tracks The Fields Of Spring and Just Get On, on the original release ahead of Silly Pretty Thing and Young and Sober. If both these tracks had been on the album from the start I would have given it a higher rating, but as often is the case with the Rats and Geldof there are some gems relegated to b sides and extra tracks on ITunes version of Compose.

Along with the sharp irony filled lyrics.  The most original thing Geldof ever did.  I can't think of any song like it.

Easily the Great Song of Indifference, but also really like Hotel 75, Here's to you, Harvest Moon, Dig a Ditch, Love or Something, The Chains of Pain

The Chains of Pain contain some outstanding lyrics:

Sometimes I fall on my knees and I pray
God won't let me see another day
Then I wake up and thank God that He's
ignored my prayers again
Systems of belief well they come and they go babe
The myths we believe in they change from day to day
I believe belief will wrap your brains in chains
So I'm for changing

Desperate deeds were done by men with guns in China
Boys in clean white shirts
Stopped the tanks in their dirt
And the blood they spilled
Just made the white shine brighter

MUDSLIDE is without doubt Bobs best as a solo artist. When I Was Young,One For Me,Heres To You are all very good. Two of the four songs that were left of HTCPSTWS called Just Get On and Fields Of Spring are also very good and I do not understand why they were left of the album.

Just maybe Fields of Spring. Why o why was this not on the album??!

I am new here and may introduce myself at some point as I imagine very much an anomaly here. Anomalous Bob fan, rediscovering him after 25 years ...

Love Or Something Else is very catchy and with great lyrics- though as my earlier post states I still love One For Me, and the lyrics are just fantastic :

I saw a picture of you grinning
Yeah that smirk covered your entire face
It almost split your head in two
I hear you sold it to OK
Sell a photo of you laughing
The more you hoot the more they pay
You don`t even need to get your clothes off anymore
You`re a bit too old for that stuff anyway
Somebody saw you at the party
You did the one where you`re falling flat on your face
You had the whole place cracking up in stitches
Apparently you fall with such good grace
