That's a fantastic find. Must have been an emotional night for all.  That would be mid '81?

Gerry left the band due to musical differences. Gerry handed in his resignation from the band to Fachna O'Kelly on the morning of the final date of their
Mondo Bongo world tour . Gerry had wanted the band to  keep a guitar driven sound rather than constantly chop and change styles.

After Gerry's departure from The Boomtown Rats on June 20th 1981, Gerry released some solo material on Epic, and Polydor Records including the singles The Ballad of The Lone RangerSome People I KnowAlphabet Town, and Pioneers. Gerry also did a 5 track EP in 1984 called I Left My Hat In HaitiBob Geldof commented that he liked Gerry's solo music.

Above is pasted from official site. Not sure what Gerry's last gig was as some of the tour dates are missing for mid 1981.

The Rats performed at a   festival in Den Hague, Netherlands at end June 1981- possibly just after GC had left.

Yeah I got this cutting from a paper in Ireland called Sunday world. Don't know what I did with the write up. But the rats where on the world tour in 81 and up until that point they were still big news So I guess that's why the Sunday world run with the story

I saw him at The Roundhouse. That was the last time.

Gerry Cott often turns up when Geldof or The Rats play in London. Like me, he won't go outside the M25

Cork is slightly outside the M25. Tell Gerry that if ArrGee goes to Cork he can do an Irish gig too

Seen him twice in London, once with BG, once with the Rats. Will he pop up in November? Don't see why not. Fingers crossed.

Pete said he'd be making a few guest appearances. Whether that really is a few, or just London, I've no idea, but pretty much certain for London.

Only got to see Gerry play once with the band in 1980 when they played Belfast Great nite They played two nite in a row Don't know why I only got to go to one of the gigs. Must have been short of money at the time as I was only a wee 17 year old way back then

Wish he'd be on stage a bit longer. At the Roundhouse he was only on for two songs, and I was in the middle of the crowd. I tried mentally to take in the enormity of what was happening but it was all over too quickly. But was Gerry right about chopping and changing. Surely Banana Republic was a prime example of changing styles, but was an enormous hit?

Gerry looked very fit and healthy that night. 5 Rats on the one stage, who'd have ever thought it?

Shouldn't overlook the fact I think that if the Garry/Simon combo is included then Darren has been playing with the band as long as Gerry ever did, slightly longer if anything.

Ironically most of us have probably seen Darren playing more than we ever did Gerry.

I'd actually feel a bit cheated now if there was any suggestion GC came back in full time to take lead guitar, not that it will happen of course.

I agree. In some way Darren seems to represent the 'barren' Simon and Garry years when the music was being played just for the fun of it. Darren always seemed to show great love and enthusiasm for the songs and still does. Darren would have made a  great original Rat.
