The songs of Bob Geldof 1977 to 2010

Just bought this from Eil. Com at sale price.

2 discs.  The quality apart from 2 or 3 songs is superlative to anything I've bought before . Not sure if this is due to the way it was made but it's crystal clear. The worst track sound is,  not disappointingly, Charmed Lives which sounds speeded up to the point where it sounds like Pinky and Perky.

Rat Trap goes for the full 5m and 10 seconds,  so you hear the dying line 'Let's get out of this Rat Trap' so often missing from other cuts.

All the singles are in strict chronology so you know what's where on a car cd player. Thought I might get the single edits for SLAY and Fire, but they're the album versions.

Anyone else own this and/or similarly chuffed?!

Yeah I spotted that too. I like the Mary version but not the Up All Night version on here.

What's with Charmed Lives speeded up?!

That is a double promo cd released by Chrysalis when they signed Bob Geldof. It was sent out to different radio stations just before Bob released How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell in the US of A.I (of course) have this and think it is a brilliant collection.Pity it has never been officaly released in the UK.It is much better than Loudmouth in my opinion.

I was looking to replace Loudmouth when I came across this. I am absolutely delighted with it. I can totally live with Charmed Lives not sounding right (did it ever? !) and everything else sounds crystal clear. 1 or 2 tracks need the volume turned up but Mondays is so clear I swear I can hear the sheet music being turned!

Don't know the reason for this. Maybe the cd did not have enough running time. Speeded up, slowed down, it really does not matter, still not a good song In my opinion anyway

Continuing to enjoy this with Room 19 growing on me considerably. The Monkees lift is rather brazen though and I'd forgotten that.

The video for this song is a bit weird. Set on a Craggy Island  nightclub crossed with the Follies Bergere.

I think the 'lift' is from Small Faces Sha la La La Lee.

I see somewhat where you're coming from Noel but surely the more obvious lift is from The Monkees song 'I'm a believer'?

Yes it's a bit of both actually. I think Bob started to 'steal' more obviously when he left the Rats. One song which he did that sounded a  lot like a Rats song is Dig A Ditch. Except for a slight (and unnecessary) Cajun inflection it could well have been done by the Rats. Lyrics are very Boomtown Ratsesque.

The song failed to make the cut for Veggies of Love but I think it was one of his best. You can listen to it on this mp3 and see what you think?

Know what I couldn't get my head round Geldof's 1st solo album had so many big names playing and singing on it and it still wasn't a hit

It did go gold, but as discussed elsewhere that was with advance orders.

BOB GELDOF - DEEP IN THE HEART NOWHERE

PHONOGRAM (MERCURY)

DITHON has some really good songs on it but it is just a mish mash of indifferent songs. Its like Bob was not sure of what sound he wanted on the album. When I Was Young is indeed one of his finest songs.

I listened to Deep in the Heart of Nowhere a lot because it was the first CD I ever bought and I had nothing else to play at the time, but I have to say I never liked it.  It is probably one of the worst albums I have ever heard.

In my opinion his best solo work/ Album has to go to The vegetation's Of Love Just a wee gem of an album. Can not fault any song on this

Listening to Loudmouth last week my brother in law commented what a rip off of the Monkees it was but felt the Sha La La La was lifted from Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl.

A great album in my view as well...though subsequently edged out by Sex Age and Death. Don't think BG will ever better that solo.
