Bob from the Godiva Festival publicity:

Bobby Boomtown, AKA Sir Bob Geldof, lead singer of The Boomtown Rats, said: "In the same way Jagger defined the 60s dream by releasing hundreds of butterflies in Hyde Park back in 69, the Boomtown Rats will be releasing some wasps from a jar and distributing one-size-fits-all wimples at the Godiva Festival.

Wimple = medieval womans head dress.

I hope those wasps keep away from any latter day Lady Godiva, parading  naked through the streets of Coventry.smile

That reminds me, if anyone goings wants Premier Inn room (Coventry South, double room, breakfast not included) a short walk from festival for £54 for the night let me know if you want booking transferred.

I'm now coming back same night so room no longer needed.

I've just booked return flight to Birmingham for Coventry gig.Haven't bothered with hotel yet-will sort something out. I think this should be a good one. Free gig (hurrah) so most likely a big crowd, high summer, wasps, wimples and Rats. What more could one ask for?smile

Is there a pub meet up planned Jules or anyone? I'm due in Birmingham at 14.40,and will get train up to Coventry.

Are you the same chap who wrote :

What's brought about the change of heart so that you're enthusiasticly attending this free gig?

Must be the summer heat Mark. Can do funny things.smile

On a serious note overall I'm disapointed about the lack of any new music from the Rats.I could go on about it but unfortunately not that many people care. As I've said spicing the gigs up with a few new songs is how I might have expected Geldof to approch things. He seems to have little new to say in song nowadays, unless he is holding back and keeping any new songs some great secret. When  the band reformed I maybe naievely hoped the might pick up from In The Long Grass and continue in that vain. In reality the was a gap of over twenty five years so the muse was lost somewhere in that timespan. Maybe it has been lost forever, who knows?

The Rats are my all time favourite band and apart from the live  gigs there are so many other ways of enjoying the music ie just listening to the albums, watching the live dvd's, old live concert recording, listening to Geldof solo albums and Bob ranting and waxing lyrical in interviews. old school day memories of friends talking about the band. It's a love that goes very deep.

When I wrote the words you quote I had become a bit jaded of seeing them live(at least twelve times in recent years). The gigs are utterly brilliant. I can honestly say none of the ones I've attended were bad. The just lacked new songs, and all I could really wish for is maybe two or three new songs. My holy grail was always a new album-probably a matter of great indiffernce to a lot of other fans.

Why don't you come along and we can have a chat? Anyway saves about £35 by being a free gig, and as it's basically in a  town centre park should get a good crowd.

i wasn't planning on an all open meet up for any of the festivals, it can be difficult. Obviously want to meet up with friends, somehow. Will need to know what time the Rats are oN and we can go from there. You know I like to get there stupidly early

Noel - that summer heat is dangerous. Look what can happen at 90 degrees, when it's too hot to breathe and it's too hot to think!

Unfortunately, I cannot get the time off work.  I hope you have a great time though Noel.

Official site says Rats on at 9.15, preceded  by 90's Indie rockers  from Liverpool, Space, at 8pm. The other two support bands I've never heard of (Luna Kiss/The Ellipsis)

Will do. You never know- a new song might turn up in the set.Bob might be feeling the musical equivelent of 'the seven year itch'.After the Cork and Dublin concerts it's been over six months so Rat fever is back. I think the Rats are big enough to bring out a good crowd, especially when it's a free gig on a Friday festvial opening  night.

I sill see if it's possible to confirm time. Suss??

If it is correct a mid afternoon meet up time in a pub sounds good. Will have to investigate...

Sorry no idea, and no more Willo to ask now he's not doing Rats. You're prob best off asking Pete on FB.

If I had to guess I'd say about 9.30 for an hour, but nothing to base that on other than it's not a headline gig and public festivals tend to shut down earlyish.

The Burnt Post gets generally good reviews, on the A45 and walking distance to park. I'm sure there are others; first I saw

How is it not a  headline gig? Space on at 8pm, then Rats 9.15. Gig ends at 10.30 according to official site. An hour and a quarter isn't too bad .Means they might pare down Banana Rep and the na na  na's on Diamond Smiles which take up about twenty minutes between then. Keep it tight Bob.smile

Friday
6pm 10.30pm

Saturday
12noon 10.30pm

Sunday
12noon 7pm

Godiva Festival is free

I meant not headline as it's not billed as a Rats gig, so full set less likely.

Willo quit after the San Sebastian "disaster". He will still do the solo gigs.

That almost reads like that gig not happening was a factor. Think it's entirely safe to say it wasn't and the torrential downpour stopping that gig was entirely coincidental.

Yes, I didn't think it bore any relation. Unless he's a rain God. biggrin

about timings from Pete:

Hurtwood time isn't confirmed but we are headlining so around 8.30 . Godiva time at the moment is 8.45 and headlining

Not sure then why official site says Rats on at 9.15? Still an extra 30 mins of the Rats might be prettty cool.Hope nobody misses anything by getting there around  9.15 if Pete  says they are on a 8.45.

Thanks to the post-referendum fiasco my chances of getting to Coventry now look pretty slim. I'm not sulking (I'm sulking a bit).
