I have been going through a stage of reading books based around the 2nd world war. There are two I'd highly recommend to people who might be interested in this topic. The first is a novel but is extremely well written & researched. It's called Kommadants Girl by Pam Jenoff (I think I've spelt that right!!). Its about a Jewish woman in Poland who goes to live with her husbands aunt (who is catholic) while he goes into hiding. He is part of a group who is planning on revolting against the war. She then goes to work for the Nazis to obtain inside information for her husbands group. I don't want to give away any more of the story in case anyone does decide to read it.... The second book is a diary kept from April 1945 to June 1945. Its called A woman in Berlin & the writter is anoyamous. It describes the Russian invasion of Berlin in the eyes of the author & is very graphic & detailed. What striked me most about the book was has the author kept optimistic throughout where a lot of people would have sunk into depts of despair. I've read alot of war books, be it memoirs or sometimes novels & this has been the first from the German prespective. That might seem to turn some people off but I feel its important to look at things from every angle as its only then I feel I can form an overall opinion. Also I believe there are too many innocent victims of every war & this book goes along way in showing that.
