Would be easier to list the ones I don't like, but if I was forced to have a top twenty or so...

He Watches It All, Dave, House on Fire, Banana Republic,Fall Down,Me & Howard Hughes,Rat Trap, Kicks, Clockwork, Someone's Looking At You, Number 1, Mary, Joey, I can make it, She's gonna do you in, Eva Braun, Living in an Island, Do The Rat, Go Man Go, Drag Me Down, Mondays, This is My Room.

But there are many more I like a lot.

Songs I truly hate are Another Piece of Red, Charmed Lives, The Little Death, Talking in Code, Walking Downtown and Skin on Skin.

And very few others I dislike to any degree (though they do tend to crop up around Mondo Bongo/V Deep!)

lol, I actually heard Skin on Skin for the first time yesterday (still relatively new to hearing all Rats songs) and it definitely stood out - in a good way! That's the first song I've heard Bob use his vocals that way, I was a little taken aback. Some of the lyrics are pretty bad IMO (esp. breath tasting like rotten feet - disgusting lol), but the tune/sound of the whole thing overrode that for me. I'd say it's probably in my top 20 or so.

While I'm at it, time to update my fav Rats songs since I've heard a lot more of 'em since last time I posted...in random order:

Like Clockwork
Rat Trap
Can't Stop
Living In An Island
(I Never Loved) Eva Braun
Never In A Million Years
Skin On Skin
He Watches It All
Banana Republic
Whitehall 1212
Diamond Smiles
Someone's Looking At You
I Don't Like Mondays
...and pretty much the entire (remastered) In The Long Grass album, excluding Walking Downtown and She's Not the Best.

If you want to hear how it should have been done, check out Pulp's My Legendary Girlfriend (or most of Pulp's His 'n' Hers esp. Pink Glove)

unfortunately I couldn't download Pink Glove, there was an error of some sort...

while My Legendary Girlfriend is not a bad song with some good emotion in it, I still prefer Skin on Skin I just loved the singing in/tune of it, esp in all the 'right or wrong' verses.

thanks for posting the songs anyway, I always like listening to new music!

oh, and you aren't the only one who doesn't like that song!...David Clancy said it 'turned him off' from listening to V Deep (along with a couple of other tracks). and I'm sure there are others...

The version of Legendary Girlfriend is not the final version (you have to get the proper CD for that, though I could put it up on RatChat2005), it's just gives a idea of the song.

Pink Glove is there just a space is incorporated on the link (pul p should be pulp) !!!!

ah, the CD version of Legendary Girlfriend is better than the nonfinal version

thanks for letting me know about the space in the URL lol, I should've noticed that! That's a very nice song (Pink Glove), I liked it a lot.

Both of those Pulp songs were...hm, better mixed than Skin on Skin. They sounded overall more well-done in general. Still though, I like Skin on Skin the best b/c of the tune, and the singing randomness that I've never heard before from the BTR.

and actually now I'm wondering...I said before how I liked Geldof's vocals in that song, but is it? I'm talking about the parts that say "nothing more or less than....I want to lick the sweat off...I want to cut in deep in...I want to sink my teeth in..." etc., those parts that have that oddly unique vocal sound. but now I'm thinking it could be Simon Crowe doing that part, I've been 'fooled' by him before (Crowe singing song parts that I thought Geldof sang). Who's singing those parts, anybody know?

They were most definately sung by Simon Crowe. I once upon a time had a tape magazine (SFX I think it was called - basically a magazine on a tape. Interviews, music etc) To cut a long story short, there was an interview with Bob geldof. In it he mentioned the superb singing of Simon. In fact Simon had a very good singing voice and did most of the backing vocals.

with the SFX mag, was Bob specifically referring to 'Skin on Skin' when praising Simon, or was he just saying he had a superb voice in general? I am aware that Simon does do most of the backing vocals, especially the higher-pitched ones, and I'd like to think I have a decent ear for who's who in the voice dept of Bob n Simon... I'm just really torn over this song though lol. it's giving me the most trouble. it really sounds like it could be either one!

I've heard Bob say at concerts that Simon has a voice like a choir boy, so I guess he's talking generally in that case. We requested Fall Down and Bob said he didn't think he could make such a good job of it as simon...

Now that I'm finally being exposed to the Rats for the first time, and slowly makng my way through the reissues, well...unsurprisingly, my choices are completely opposite.

In The Long Grass:  Walking Downtown is my favorite, followed by She's Not The Best, and Up or Down.  I don't even like Up or Down that much, but it does succeed in making me nostalgic for a certain time.  None of the other tracks work for me.

The Fine Art of Surfacing:  Nice N Neat (favorite), When The Night Comes.  Maybe, if I'm feeling really really generous Someone's Looking At You.

Haven't really listened to most of the other CDs yet.   So far, I thank God for the solo stuff.

Lordy, that's tough. I voted for Diamond Smiles in the poll.

Once in Math class or something I jotted down like #1-36 the rankings of the Geldof/Rats' songs I had known of at the time.

My Top Seven, which I consider to all be amazing songs, remains unchanged:

1. Diamond Smiles ; 2. Someone's Looking At You ; 3. I Never Loved Eva Braun ; 4. Fall Down ; 5. I Don't Like Mondays ; 6. Drag Me Down ; 7. Dave.

Due to the sheer variety of the Rats, however, I of course get mini obsessions with songs over the course of the months; presently my mini-obsession is Nice 'N' Neat, which I've been listening to religiously [no pun intended]. More recently it was When the Night Comes and also Up All Night, two more songs that, along with Nice N Neat, fall into my second-tier of Rats songs, which I consider to be really, really good songs but not on the level of the top 7.

There's a few I am indifferent toward - Elephant's Graveyard, Nothing Happened Today, I Can Make It If You Can.. and some I don't care for - Neon Heart, She's So Modern, Like Clockwork, and , my personal least-favorite, Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero.

All in all, however, with the exception of Wind Chill Factor, which is somewhat woeful, all of the songs, even my low-rated ones, are great listens and much better than 99.9% of the music out there today. I'd rather listen to She's So Modern or Neon Heart than the best of many other bands.

Yeah, it's very hard to choose. But I voted Drag me Down, but I really like them all. Also Love Joey's on the street again. It depends on what mood I'm in. I don't like mondays allways makes me cry, so I try to avoid it, on good days, cause it's so beautiful, in a sad way.

Even so, I guess song preferences change frequently for all music and artists.  It is an interesting observation.  Rat Trap...I Don't Like Mondays...there are so many BTR songs I like better than those two (highest %s on this poll)!

They are great songs, but to diehard fans like us they are a little boring and there is so much better out on the albums.

I think that poll was done in 2003, it was when the Best of came out. He said it at a concert I was at, must have been 2003.

And it comes in two excellent versions, the raucous single, & the most thoughtful "telling a story" album version.

Same song, two different moods to suit.

My favorites:

1. Joey's on the Street Again - perfect lyrically and musically

2. Close as you'll ever be - most underrated - live version is even better

3. Looking After No.1 - ironic prologue for Bob

4. Rat Trap - Joey 2

5. Me and Howard Hughes - second most underrated - so well structured and performed

6. I Don't Like Mondays - Everything - music, lyrics, timing, the video - eternal classic for hardcore and casual fance (probably even non-fans)

7. Keep it up - Simple and satisfying - never get tired of it

8. Diamond Smiles - I love the way it builds - very few bands can create a song like that

9. Up all Night - best beat of any Rats song - perfect for a remix

10. Banana Republic - experimental yet accessible - very pleasing to listen to - again the live version is even better

11. Dave - classic single - don't know how this wasn't huge - perhaps that God-awful album cover did them in.

13. A Hold of Me

Least favorite:

1. Like Clockwork - I keep trying to like it but I find the begiining too irritating - does not stand the test of time like other songs

2. Having My Picture Taken -campy and cringeworthy - rhymes with "Kinks"

3. This is My Room - and these are my earplugs

4. He Watches if All - "fell in love with a lighthouse keeper, spends his time bringing home the beacon" - shades of Spinal Tap

You can hear the rasp of the snare drum as the acoustic guitar strums out the first few chords.......(obviously recorded as studio live)
a bit of 'Na na' harmonising from Himself.....
Then huge compression when the bass and drums kick in.
Driving rhythm,
Gerry Cott lead....
The lyrics, so paranoid
1980.....
Already Gods with No.1, Clockwork, Rat Trap, Mondays......
and now this...
1980......
its on every radio station...
TOTP
everywhere
And they're walking on clouds.....with a swagger

'Thres a spy in the sky, theres a noise on the wire......'

That was a moment...
