Crikey, his opinions on the albums are spot on.  Wonder if he'd care to expand of the four ****e songs on V Deep   (may need to register to see whole article, but it's free).

As Bob Geldof prepares to receive a Brit award for his contribution to music, he tells David Cheal about the moment that launched his career


Then, barely pausing to draw breath, he's talking (sic)  me, one by one, through the Boomtown Rats albums; those who didn't follow their career closely might be surprised to learn that there were six of them (Geldof has also released four solo albums). They're all being released on CD on Monday, some of them for the first time, so he's been listening to them a lot. The ones he likes best are the first one, The Boomtown Rats ("These young kids, you hear a great confidence, a nascent ability – these guys could probably go on to do anything if they got the chance") and the last one, In the Long Grass ("These guys have spent 10 years together and it's completely intuitive"). Tonic for the Troops is "pop, it's everything we learned from playing every single night in a year", honed to a sheen by producer Mutt Lange; The Fine Art of Surfacing is "over-produced"; Mondo Bongo he thought was a "total failure" until he listened to it again; now he loves its "scrappiness". V Deep, he says, is "bursting with ideas but has four really ****e songs".

He's a successful entrepreneur, he gave the world Live Aid – but Bob Geldof says he feels more himself on stage than anywhere else. As a Boomtown Rats retrospective hits the shops, he talks to Sarah Crompton


The reason for our meeting is that, for the first time, a collection of the Boomtown Rats' greatest hits has been released on CD, put together from an internet poll of Rats fans. The result stands the test of time – it's full of good tunes and evocative lyrics – but it is also a voyage of rediscovery not just for listeners but for the singer himself.


"To my delight, because the choices are fan-based, it's a bit anoraky. So the number one choice was Dave, which I was really glad about because I liked that song very much and it was on the last Rats album which I perversely think is the best one. It got lost under all the Band Aid stuff but I do think that lyrically it was really good and by that point the band just totally understood each other without effort."
