I'm dying to know about the Brits - what did he play, say... Did he play with the his band or with any BTR members (as I heard on Vienna based fm4 radio station)?

Please you UK guys who watched ITV - give us a quick report of what we missed!

... it was like a cabaret act with all the strings and horns. And he wore a suit! Came across as pretty cool though.

Pete Briquette played and was thanked between songs.  Really good to do that.

I heard Rat Trap in HMV the other day and it sounded great, but at the Brits it wasn't. Mondays sounded dull and lifeless as well.  The audience looked underwhelmed as well, given the sparkling performances from FF, S Sisters and Green Day earlier on.  Ok I don't expect Geldof to be like he was 25 years ago, but the songs lacked any sense of excitement.  Geldof looked a bit bored by them.  If I were say 16 and never heard of the Boomtown Rats, the performances wouldn't have made me want to find out much more about them.

He got quarter of an hour and two songs (no one else got that time). Jools Holland gave him the award, and lots of oldies praised him (Bono, Sting, Annie Lennox, Pete T, Elton...).  Even his acceptance of the award was unusually modest!

Have a .avi of it.   Will post yousendit.com link as soon as it uploads (260MB) !  It has failed once, and I can't check til I get home.  May compress a bit more if needed.

I better get and watch that Hammersmith DVD to remind me what the Rats were really like.

LOL. I think that award may have really meant something to him.

>strings and horns<

With BG on stage??

Don't know much about yousendit.com/avi - is that a format for videos? What kind of player would I need? Great if I could see some of it though!!

It was like he had the London Philharmonic backing him.

Scissor sisters were the big winners (3 gongs) and did a great song backed by huge singing fruit, vegetables and birds by Jim Henson.

Franz were their usual exciting self and got 2 gongs.

Green Day gave the best musical performance.

The Bedingfields!!

Snoop Doggy Dog did a funny Ali G impression.

Oh and Nobhead Williams did his kareoke tune.

thanks, ArrGee! I was anxious to know as well.

I, too, would like that file sent to me once ya get it compressed, if you don't mind If you don't post it on the forum, my address is cacook1@vt.edu.

That's too bad that the Rats' songs lacked energy and enthusiasm. Guess he's just bored playing those hits for the nth time (like you said), especially Mondays.

In case you don't already know, there are some good pix of the Brits event (and many other great Geldof photos) at http://editorial.gettyimages.com/ms_gins/source/home/home.aspx?pg=1. You'll need to put his name in the search box to see 'em

Irish rocker BOB GELDOF shocked British radio listeners last night (09FEB05) when he launched into a swearing tirade about pop beauty GWEN STEFANI.

The former BOOMTOWN RATS picked up an Outstanding Contribution to Music accolade at the BRIT AWARDS in London, while NO DOUBT frontwoman Stefani was named International Female Solo Artist.

During a backstage interview with BBC RADIO 1 while waiting for a soundcheck, bored Geldof moaned, "People like Gwen Stefani take f**king ages.

"I'm going to sound sh*t because I've got flu."
10/02/2005 03:56

If he wasn't well might have accounted for lack of sparkle and bored look? I haven't watched yet, will be watching it on tape later/tomorrow morning.

Gwen Stefani was pretty good.  Better than I expected.  A little offbeat, and the song reminded me of Clockwork!

The orchestra set was a little weird, however, I thought Bob was brilliant, fantastic. I wouldn't say he was lacking in anything

My partner's 19 year old son thought he was brilliant too! Not sure if he's a convert or will even buy the music, but it's a start.

I was there and have to say the atmosphere was excellent, Bob got the respect he deserved and was very well received by the crowd, he seemed genuinely touched by the award.  What a great choice of songs that provided a wonderful trip back down memory lane, all the words came flooding back not just for me but for all the people on my table who were also, for the record, standing on their seats. Bob and the gang was magnificent far exceeding my expectations, both his performance and in choosing Rat Trap and I don't like Mondays. The finale this year was so much better than Van Morrison, Tom Jones and Duran Duran at previous Brits.

The upshot is that I now have all my vinyl albums out and am introducing my 11 year old to the Rats, he loves them and Busted busting are a faded memory!

Thanks Bob, I had a thoroughly enjoyable night, felt 20 odd years younger and remembered what life was once all about! Long live the Boomtown Rats!

Bob was very modest about his award, indeed it obviously meant a lot to him and this was clear from watching on TV as well as being there .

I thought Geldof tried too hard during "Mondays", but "Rat Trap" was fine. To be honest, "Mondays" or "Rat Trap" ought to be put to bed for a more gig style number whenever he does these shows - this is where the likes of "Diamond Smiles" or "The Great Song Of Indifference" come in handy!

At least he didn't make a tit of himself like Siouxsie Sioux did by trying too hard. One could see the tumbleweed going through the audience as her lines fell flatter than Geldof's infamous "sell records" pitch to the Columbia sales reps! He had a cold & was not firing on all cylinders, but still did the business.

Was in HMV today, buying "Hot Press" (Ireland's version of the NME, except without the juvenilie pretentions!), and boy did it feel good to see the Rats videos on their TV screens & hear the "Best Of..." blasting out of the speakers...

..but not half as good as seeing the completely empty racks where the back catalogue had been! The copies of "Five Deep" had arrived later in the week, after the other five albums, and I got the last copy...the last of anything bar the "Best Of..." CDs!

As the guy as the HMV desk put it, "Yeah, weird innit? Who'd have thought!"

I didn't know he had a cold!   Now I feel bad criticising. It would explain the vocal performance.

And I think you hit the nail on the head, there are songs that work better on record than live, and I sometimes think the Rats are just seen as Mondays and maybe Rat Trap and little else.

And why is it so weird that people are buying the re-releases?  They sold 1000s in the seventies/eighties and people are still replacing their vinyl.  I've always thought the Rats were undersold and discredited in the press, but that people who buy records don't give a monkey's and will buy them if they know about them and they are there.

Bit worrying they are going out of stock so quickly!  Hope they keep putting the cardboard slip covers on them, I've only just ordered mine

My opinion (for those who wanna know) -

The acceptance speech was 'short and sweet;' if he went on longer, that would've been ok because this was the biggest award of the event (I'm assuming!), but he was humble, said his bit, the end. still lives up to his 'modest bob' nickname (like some of you have said, him being modest.) Too often do entertainment award-accepters ramble on and on, or cry, get hysterical, etc - and they aren't even receiving lifetime achievement awards!

I did feel kinda bad for Geldof after hearing that Jonathon Ross radio show, how he said that getting an award like that is almost like saying 'ok, we're done with you, don't make any more records.' I never thought of it that way.

I wasn't impressed with Mondays, but all I have to compare it to is the Loudmouth CD version...not completely fair to compare live performances to recorded songs! But I agree with those of you who felt Mondays was kinda dull/lacking/etc...not only was the tempo significantly slower, I felt Geldof was a bit out of tune here and there and also struggled with some of the high notes. But, understandable if he had a cold.

However, I enjoyed Rat Trap a lot! In both songs, I appreciated how Geldof varied how he sang some of the words (pitch, inflection, etc - bound to happen in any live performance) in both songs, but it was more noticeable to me in Rat Trap. That song had more pulse and energy (in relevance), and Geldof's voice just sounded better (for good reasons - his vocals were more warmed up, and RT words aren't drawn out like Mondays ones). And I, too, thought the ending was fantastic, very dramatic, etc.

so I'm so glad n thankful that I got to hear it since I couldn't see it here (US), thanks to ArrGee

Hiya,

I thought that Bobs appearance at The Brits was great - it was just fantastic to see him performing again. I so wish I'd taped it, made me feel like a 16yr old again lol.

I seem to keep missing all the other performances too but I bet none of them will top that - will they?

That's what I thought when I first heard the song. I tried to find out if a certain Dave Stewart was the producer of this song (I know he produced some songs for G. Stefani, but I'm not sure about this one) - does anybody know? A possible connection?? (Just joking.)

...after seeing it (only heard it before).

This was a treat for me as I have never seen Geldof perform, ever! live, tv, videos/DVDs, etc....don't own any...one of the main reasons why I got the 'Someone's Lookin At You' DVD - my only opportunity to see the Rats perform!

I loved his visual performance of the two Brits songs. I still hold true to my Mondays opinion, audio-wise, but seeing him improved the overall song 'experience.' I liked how he kept time by moving his leg to the beat, and just seeing him dance/use his body rhythmically in any way - very nice He sure does seem to take trips down memory lane while performing older songs (understandably). And with Rat Trap, also good, kinda got some mad skillz shifting his guitar from front to back!

I only hope someday to see him perform live in person!

Naturally, I disagree with most of you.  I thought playing in front of a full orchestra was a brilliant idea, brilliantly executed.

Those of you who know me know that I REALLY dislike Mondays, and generally prefer the solo work to the Rats stuff.  Well....the Brit awards actually had me liking Mondays for the first time.  That's saying a lot.  I also developed a new respect for Rat Trap.  Who knew BG was always meant to front an orchestra?

Amazingly, I agree with Fran

I always loved Monday, but the full orchestra made it even more fabulous. Geldof sang the song with emotion, and you certainly couldn't tell that he's singing it for the 1,237, 386th time.

I've always thought Rat Trap was just meh, but that version is certainly a keeper.

BTW, thanks a million to ArrGee for capturing and sharing with us poor North-American fans.

Wanted to mention that I just happened to stumble on the show, which was just broadcast on BBC-America.  And now, for my totally subjective personal opinion:

It's interesting to see, even after just the first segment with Scissor Sisters and Franz Ferdinand, both bands I do NOT like.  For reasons unknown, I found both performances enjoyable, and finally understood why these bands have fans.  Mysterious.

This show was also the first time I found Joss Stone convincing, but she lost me again in the duet with Robbie Williams.  Mr. Williams, I think I've seen him before...not my style, but he wasn't atrocious.

Weird that I'd never heard of SO MANY nominees.  At all.

David and Natasha Bedingfield - who are they and why are they butchering (umm, I mean covering) CHAKA??  Why are a brother and sister singing a song about lust as a duet?  So many questions....

The Streets (?) - sort of interesting, but noooooo.....really missed the mark.

Jamelia and Lamar?? - more people I've never heard of before.  Kept wondering where Mick and Tina were (was the entirety of the choreography lifted? or merely inspired by?) ... but props to Jamelia for working the high heels and, damn girl!, you do have great legs!

Green Day kicked some serious ASS.  WOO HOO!!!  Knew I shoulda put a tape in!

Keane - don't think I'd seen them perform live before.  Loved the lead singer's wide white belt, gave me fashion flashbacks.  Sad he's not prettier, they'd get more TV exposure in the US if he were... I like this band.

The winner in the category of "Performance?  That's all about the costumes, choreography, make up and set design" - clearly Gewn Stefani.  The short red gloves?  Killer.  The shoes?  Killer.  The dress?  Killer.  The dancers kneepads?  Killer.  Gwen's got the best designers on the planet.

Snoop and Pharrell Williams - I hope The Streets were paying attention.  Children, THAT'S how it's done.  Hmmm...wonder if BG and Snoop were hanging in the green room together?  I'd pay money to be a fly on that wall...hilarity might have ensued!

The host was quite a disappointment, as were most of the presenters.  And the MasterCard logo was just TOO damned ever-present!  Generally, the evening's fashions weren't too exciting, nor was the stage design. But props to the lighting designer.  God bless Vari-Lite.

Yeah, now having seen the BG stuff on a nice full sized TV, I wish I'd taped it.  Better than the mini-version on the computer screen.  MJ, you were right.  Vince IS smoking onstage!  So much for his being a health freak...it's the devil nicotine.  The man's obviously possessed.

Of course, I'm still pissed that Kanye West didn't win.  Jesus Walks is just SO brilliant.

Finally, thank you to everyone who's ever said I looked like Minnie Driver.  I wish.

The Streets...pretty much an English thing I think!

Whilst I was in Rome I met two American girls and all we kept talking about was the differences in slang..we were like 'do you know what fit means?' and they kept saying 'do you say let's book it?'. At the time it was really interesting and insightful because we were all drunk. Looking back on it, we must have looked really stupid.

But yeah, I've heard that The Streets album comes with a glossary in America because so much of their songs are just...well..to be honest, it's pretty much chav-speak. No offence to any chavs out there! JK! =)

I just think it's funny the way two groups of people that speak the same language are can be so different. I enjoy it. It's cool.

The problems I had with the Streets had nothing to do with the language, and everything to do with the inability (in my opinion) to put across attitude, coupled with the complete inability to sing...

But OK, what's a chav?

And I think what went on in Rome was perfectly normal, drunk or not.

I finally managed to download BG at the Brits... Thank you ArrGee and Franna! Especially as I just found out none of the German tv companies thought it neccessary to broadcast the ceremony so far, and I'm not expecting them to.

As some of you wrote, I agree that there have been more powerful live versions of "Mondays", but I enjoyed "Rat Trap" a lot. Liked the orchestra, quite different from normal!

The short speech Bob gave made clear that the award means a lot to him. I'm glad he got it.

And I like his suit a lot!

That's very brave Franna. I don't think I've met anyone else on this forum who dislikes Franz Ferdinand. There's just not very much you can say against them. But I agree so far: They ARE a f*** brilliant live band!

This show was also the first time I found Joss Stone convincing, but she lost me again in the duet with Robbie Williams.  Mr. Williams, I think I've seen him before...not my style, but he wasn't atrocious.

Again - I think one can like or dislike Robbie (or Joss) for their images, but they're both very good singers. Is that subjective (from me) now? I guess not. Oh, I love Joss for always being on stage barefootin'. I think she's sweet and I really hope she won't be "eaten alive" by the msuic biz before she's 20.

Keane - don't think I'd seen them perform live before.  Loved the lead singer's wide white belt, gave me fashion flashbacks.  Sad he's not prettier, they'd get more TV exposure in the US if he were...

So you guys like a singer for good looks instead of for a good voice?

Keane - I heard them first in a live recording and thought "that guy has a serious problem", because you could hear him breathe between the lines and sometimes words or syllables. I didn't like that at all. They sound much better on CD. "Somewhere only we know" - great song!

But props to the lighting designer.  God bless Vari-Lite.

I only saw the BG bit but noticed the lights there as well. Quite beautiful mostly, but somehow overdone in places (at least that's what it looked like on my computer screen). - What is Vari Lite?

MJ, you were right.  Vince IS smoking onstage!  So much for his being a health freak...it's the devil nicotine.  The man's obviously possessed.

Franna, where did you see Vince smoke on stage in that clip?? I know he DOES smoke on stage, but I wonder where you saw it here!

By the way: Have you noticed that Bono - apart from sounding a bit corny - sits in front of a putto??

This is a very simplistic answer, but - with very rare exceptions, you simply don't get to be on TV unless you're beautiful.  That goes for actors, newscasters, people in commercials, people in "reality" TV shows, and probably even more so for singers.  It's a VERY visual culture.  Few singers will get any exposure unless they look good to begin with.

"What is Vari Lite?"

www.varilite.com  They'll probably explain it better than I will, go to the "company" page ... but also look at the other stuff on the site and you'll understand it all.  My bare bones explanation: Historically, theatrical lights were stationary, and to get a color effect you'd put colored plastic sheets in front.  Vari-Lite invented a system where the lights are controlled by computer, and can rotate both side to side and up and down.  The color changes come from within the light itself, so you can change through lots and lots of colors very very quickly, all while the light is moving.  I studied lighting design in the 70s.  Vari Lite changed the lighting industry by designing Phil Collins' 1981 tour.  I've worked on shows with Vari Lites, and I just love them (I've never designed with them.  I never did much lighting design professionally, but I'd have loved to.).  They're amazing pieces of design, both technically and creatively.  You can do all sorts of great things with them.  And the Vari Lite guys that come out from corporate to run them are usually hot - always a plus.

Anyway, I didn't see the Brit Awards listed on the Vari Lite site as a show they'd done, so I suppose it's possible they weren't actually Vari Lites, but 1) they certainly looked like Vari Lites to me, and 2) Vari Lite has a patent on the design, so I don't know how close anyone else can really get.  At this point, I'd say if the lighting looks like that, it's probably a Vari Lite system.

And by the way, that sort of design is expensive.  If you're doing a small show, a show on a budget, you're not running Vari Lites.

"Franna, where did you see Vince smoke on stage in that clip??"

I didn't see it in the clip.  MJ said she did...  I only noticed it when I saw the footage on my 27" TV.  I'll have to look through the clip again, but I still don't know if I'll see it.  Ask MJ.  She probably watches the clips on her home theatre screen, big as life.

"By the way: Have you noticed that Bono - apart from sounding a bit corny - sits in front of a putto??"

Corny?  That's tame for Bono, you should hear him when he really gets going!  What's a putto?

I guess I'd rather not hear Bono then "when he gets going"...

But I'm starting to understand why you (in the US) take him for gospel...

A putto is a plaster figure used for decorative purposes in (mostly) baroque architecture. There are churches that are heavy with puttos... A putto is basically a naked boy with wings. When I posted this yesterday I thought puttos could be female as well - I think what Bono sat in front of was a female figure. So maybe it wasn't a putto after all, just simply a white naked plaster woman! Must watch it again!
