I just had to voice my opinion here on the excellent "V Deep" opus.
I'd ne'er hard it before the re-issues came out, and,so,when I bought it last week, and after reading some of it's reviews,I was wondering how good it would be,if at all.Well, totally gobsmacked I was! I absolutely love it! Most every track, save one or two that are just 'good',is top-notch! The soundscapes, the moods, the atmosphere of the album,it's perfect--I've had it on the ol' boombox and PC for the past week now, and, yeah,it's true--I'd rate this along with "Tonic" as my favourite Rats record.
So much variety, sounds and just dang good songs! Viva "V-Deep"
I heard 'He Watches It All' for the first time on the Jonathon Ross radio show, and loved it. Love 'Never In A Million Years' too...so I wouldn't be surprised if the whole CD (or most of it) is quite good!
In time, I'll get 'em all...just taking it slow for now, can't splurge too much on my college budget!
thanks for the review, IrelandCalling, nice to shed light on a less popular Rats album
Yes it is an excellent album. I missed being able to play it for years because I didn't have a turntable. I managed to get a tape (second hand) and it jumped so was glad to get hold of a US import version and now the latest copy.
Which tracks did you not like so much IrelandCalling?
Okay, which tracks didn't I like as much on "V Deep"? Well, out of the 10 tracks, there are 8 i love,and,2 that are maybe not as great, but, are still enjoyable tracks. The two would be "Charmed lives" and "Skin On Skin". I know "Charmed.." was a single from the album, but, for me anyway it lacks the exquisite sounds of the others.Good, but a wee bit shy of great! "Skin.." is good,I don't 'Skip' it on the CD,but,it hasn't got the bite the rest of the opus has,at least to these ears anyway!
P.S. Love the extra tracks too--"Say Hi To Mick",the two Alternative version-tracks(of 'Up all night" and "House On Fire" and the other, was it a B-Side? Whatever it was,it's dang good sh-tuff!
I like this one,not as much as the rest of the Rats' albums, but,it definitely has it's moments.About 2/3 of it is stellar methinks--the likes of "Straight Up","This is my room"--plus the last 6 songs on the disc, love 'em all.I'm not so sure about "Another peice of red" and "Please don't go",maybe one other..
Overall though, much better than critics give it credit for!
I was surprised to find that V Deep, which used to be my least favorite album, has jumped up a few notches since I last seriously listened to it. I haven't had time to re-listened all the albums, but I'm thinking my taste have changed with age, so I'll have to make me a new favorite list.
Certainly, back in the day, it took a while for me to warm up to this album. Now I unabashedly love -- it's held up really well. I was surprised to discover, in reading the liner, that this one was never even released in the US. It was released in Canada; I still have my Canadian record album. But I guess the Rats always were much more popular on this side of the border...
Is that so? Interesting.... I don't know anything about where any albums were released (I wasn't born for a few of 'em), but it's definitely not sruprising. He's not popular, let alone well known, let alone known, period - in this country (US) at all
