Deep In The Heart of Nowhere - Early 1987...

..., I was 13, this record came out (I guess it came out in 86, but it took a while to cross the channel to Germany). Obviousy, I had the LP version, though I think there was a CD already. I'd bought "This is the world calling" as a single before, and loved it, but I loved this album even more. A guy with messy hair and a stubble on the cover, a map of some remote place on the sleeve. And the lyrics to read and sing along.

Besides "World calling", I liked especially "Beat of the night", "Pouring rain", "Love like a rocket" and "When I was young". I loved this: "Live fast, be a supernova, explode now while you can". A tiny note on the sleeve said "BG's autobiography 'Is that it?' available now as a Penguin paperback". I got that book for my 14th birthday (in the original version in English, as it hadn't been translated yet), devoured it and I have been a BG fan ever since. Together with a group of friends, I travelled to many BG concerts (as he toured Germany frequently between '90 and '02).

As I'm not a native speaker of English, reading the book and listening to the lyrics was much about learning English, too. As a school subject, I liked the language, but it only became something I could handle more easily and relatively carefree after I'd read the book and the lyrics to "Deep in the heart". Weird to think BG helped anyone with their English..!

From today's point of view, some songs on "Deep in the heart" sound very 80-ish (no surprise really) and all in all, it's not even my BG-all-time-favourite. But for me that album remains something very special and I wish he'd play more songs from it live on stage!
