As The Boomtown Rats they were part of the punk explosion of the mid 70s, but originally the band started out as an R'n'B act albeit with a rocky edge.
Now known as The Rats, the band are once again delighting crowds with their particular brand of music.
"We were never a punk band really," says Garry, "but because we wore leather jackets we were sort of lumped in with them."
"... Bob was much more driven and more of a self-publicist. Plus...", he laughs, "He was the noisiest. Actually the whole band was very important music-wise, but Bob wrote some great lyrics."
Fast forward 22 years to 2008 and a new version of the band, called The Rats, has come into being.
Garry and Simon have reunited to play their music as it should be heard, with the driving rhythms and meaty guitar riffs. Along with Darren Beale on guitar and Peter Barton on bass and vocals they perform all the bands' classic hits along with some of the live favourites like Neon Heart and Joey's On The Street Again.
"I'd been playing with Simon in an R'n'B band, but they split. I hadn't really listened to our old Boomtown Rats records but then Peter Barton contacted me and was really enthusiastic about me playing again."
"I went and listened to the albums and was able to be pretty objective about them and I thought that there was some really good stuff there that I'd enjoy playing again."
"I spoke with Bob and he said that as long as we didn't call ourselves The Boomtown Rats then it was OK with him.
