Overall I think Paul Weller. Jam were better than U2. Style Council had their moments and his solo material is better than most U2 since Achtung Baby.
There is an evil store near me called FOPP which is selling cheap CDs and vinyl, all brand new. I ended up getting the vinyl re-issue of Boy & October for £6 each, and the Joshua Tree deluxe edition for £10 (2CD+DVD) along with Kaiser Chiefs Angry Mob Double LP for £3 and Razorlight Up All Night with bonus 7" for £5. But the other week I bought a couple of solo Weller albums and Jam Snap with the Bonus ep. I also got all the Jam vinyl singles in a two box set when zavvi went bust.
I never saw Jam/Weller live (though did see Rick Buckler's band!) , but must confess to have been underwhelmed when I saw U2 on their zooropa tour.
Probably would be worth doing a versus on all the singles; Jam would win hands down and albums , U2 would probably bag that with Unforgettable Fire or Joshua Tree though All Mod Cons and Stanley Road could run them close.
But ultimately I listen to the Jam far more, so easy choice.

Goes without saying. The only band better than the Boomtown Rats are Pulp , I am yet to be convinced by Franz Ferdinand who are the nearest contenders. Interesting that today I had the chance to see Jarvis ****er live, yet turned it down. I just don't think singers should embark on solo careers. Yet if the new Rats turn up in any town I happen to be in in anytime soon, I will be there (A pulp re-union would trump that !)
However I think there are a large number of bands better than U2.
Without making this the U2 thread, as if they need the publicity, I have enjoyed the u2=bbc shows on the red button. Oddly enough I could have been at the BBC roof top show, but for the fact I was coming back from Dublin with bundles of Irish papers filled with U2. Quite funny I saw some guys camped outside HMV in Grafton Street and didn't twig why until I read the papers the next day! Maybe they should have done a show there. Atop the U2 tower! (ha ha ha ha)
