Rats lead second division in Irish Rock League.....

They really have no competition.  I expect they will be promoted next season.  Oddly the league is led by the Pogues.  Who come from England!  Oh yes they do... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pogues

Oddly no JJ72, but next season the boys from the North will be in which could make it difficult (Undertones/Ash/Divine Comedy/Starjets!!!)

I'm surprised U2 aren't top of Division 1, but am I just biased?  Or is it my imagination that their popularity is worldwide and massive?hmm

I'd have thought the BTRs would have been above some of those in Div 1 easily!

To be honest when I think of Irish Rock Acts, Thin Lizzy, U2 and The Rats would be foremost in my thoughts.  I was surprised that The Cranberries have sold more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Ireland#Top_5_biggest_selling_Irish_acts_of_all_time  than any other other Irish band other than U2.

It's strange that no Irish band has made a big impact since the Cranberries.  I though JJ72 would become a important band, but they fizzled out after their debut album , and the same with The Thrills.

Absolutely, and the Undertones not far behind (or maybe that was just because I was a fan).  The Thrills, surprisingly and disappointingly, hardly did anything and I wouldn't have thought they particularly belonged on here for that reason.

The Undertones are a UK band.  Technically not Irish. The Thrills turned out to be rubbish!  I thought they had promise, but their second and third albums were poor (check them out on Spotify).

It is surprising that since U2 there hasn't been a really good proper rock band out of Ireland.  Lots of lightweight acts (Enya, Cranberries, Coors, Borezone (sic), Wetlife (sic)), but nothing to rank with Thin Lizzy, The Rats and U2.

Well, since I wrote that Fontaines DC released Dogrel and A Heros Death.

The Script are massive in Ireland, but absolute s***e as far as I'm concerned. Think they do pretty well in the UK and internationally as well. No mention of Rollerskate Skinny either, doomed to obscurity unfortunately but they were pretty unique and very inventive.  Saw them live a few times back in the early 90's when there was so much good music around especially Coventry band Adorable. Micro Disney or Cathal Caughlan are not in the league table either. Must be in the Southern League (Cork area) looking for promotion.

I think I checked out Fontaines DC and didn't like them. U2 and Thin Lizzy really are populist bands whereas The Rats never were, never became a stadium band but in a way that's good.
