How very strange   How weird that he's not playing at the Live 8 concert - the main one (by a long shot) as I understand it.

I just assumed he'd play both.

Better get a petition going about that ... BTW, just cause I'm curious, what's the go with Status Quo playing or not - did they commit an awful offence and fall out of the organisers' favour? Or did they learn to play a fourth chord . Na, I'm sure they can still deliver "whatever you want, whatever you need" .

I would love to see the Rats again. I could see Bob, Pete,Simon, Garry and Johnny doing it, but not Gerry.

Anyway, I thought Bob was playing at Hyde Park. Anyhow I presume the Edinburgh one will be televised, so I can always tape it.

So maybe now that TBR are suing bob it may be a little difficult to get them to all play together...

Yeah, It would be nice to see, especially when you wasn't born, when they where together.

We haven't done anything about this. How can we get a petition going online? We need a website to put it up? We haven't got long - a week and a day! Now the Spice Girls definitely aren't playing there must be an available space surely?

I tried to write a webpage from my ISP site, but I can't do anything that others can contribute to, so utterly useless Anyone else got any bright s?

Just to set the record straight, all the Rats minus Geldof have met up a few times for drinks, etc over the last decade or so; the others having apologised long ago to Gerry for treating him like dirt back in 1981 during the Far East "Mondo Bongo" tour that was the cause of his departure.

Geldof & Crowe are far from being on speaking terms thesedays after his rather crass "News Of The World" interview a few years back. Basically Simon's burned his boats in that respect.

On top of that, Johnny's busy in Japan, Gerry's rushed off his feet with his Harry Potter commitments (providing trained animals for the movies, as well as elsewhere!), & Bob...well, just look at today's papers for that one! Him & business partner Pete together's about as near as it's ever going to get for us.

I'm just happy that they're all doing well in their own spheres...and of course this year we got some new Rats material c/o the CD releases. It's been a great year to be doing the Rat!

I'm sure everyone was as happy as me to see Bob perform today!!! I really hoped it would happen but kinda resigned myself to the fact it wouldn't.  Then when it did I had to turn the TV up full blast and jump around the room singing along!!! it was the best performance of the whole thing

That really topped my day. Being there was fantastic, but to have Bob sing too... no words can discribed. He received a very warm reception from the crowd, so it definitely wasnt out of place. I hope he's getting a very very well earned rest now.

Even Pete?

Pete seems a bit like the man in the middle in this whole Rats thing.

I always thought Pete/Gerry/Johnnie were pretty close (especially as two of them are cousins), and that Bob and Garry were another pair of mates, so their fall out is a bit surprising.  Simon seemed most pally with Johnnie (Gung~Ho) and latterly Garry (Pump Jockeys) .

Anyway, what exactly happened in the Far East?  I know there was a plot to ditch Gerry, that he missed Simon's birthday party, and he resigned before he got sacked.  But there must be a lot more than that, isn't there? (musical differences! LOL)

yeah, I'm not saying liking the rats doesn't go with liking the real punkbands, and although the rats were real great, they were absolutely not a punk band...sure they had songs that sort of lean towards punk and punkrock, but as for them being a punkband? nah..

by the way, yeah, early Adam Ant I suppose you could sort of call punk....ha, not surprised that part of his crowd turned away from him when he started doing the whole kings of the wild frontier/ prince charming thing...what a shock..from songs like Cleopatra and Ligotage to Stand and Deliver!

wooho, wait, wait...from the beginning, and I do have to say that you two are a bit confusing, it's not too easy to get what you wanna say, but I'll reply after how I get it...

first of, as we allready established, the rats were never a punk band, but had songs that leaned towards punkrock. as for some of their songs being "very punk", well mouse, we'll agree to disagree...

I've heard some bootlegs too, and I don't know if you've heard the one from Germany -78? anyhow, I'm gonna use it for sake of the discussion.. Now, the soundquality is not good, even though I did have a guy fix it for me..the band's playing fast, aggressive, Bob's not articulating very good. The main impression is that they're just being sloppy, or high, or whatever...now, does that make it punk? I'd say no.. well, whatever, everyone decides what they think for themselves anyway.

And as for Adam Ant, he started out as a punk. Mouse, I'm not sure what Ant you've heard, the live aid bit I'm sure, but what else? well, obviously the kings of the wild frontier, prince charming, friend or foe, strip, vive le rock and the rest of his albums up to -95 aren't punk...I'm absolutely not saying that. But ca 77-79 he was a punkperformer, not like he had some punky songs, he was a punk. If you listen to very early recordings of his, meaning bootlegs I suppose, that's punk. But with that said, he wasn't close with the punksociety in London at the time, he thought they were a bit silly...meaning he thought they talked about being punk, rather than being punk...In the sound Ligotage he sang "don't tell me it's imagery, I wore mine yesterday", a obvious blow to the punks..

( ha...I know my ant )

well that's my two cents...don't worry tango, I'm not after an argument anymore than you are...it's just a discussion, right?

lol.....of course you can comment! ha....the thing about me is that I'm very opinionated and have no real problem expressing myself..so, yeah, I comment alot..not that that should discourage you ...

wow, you do really know your stuff about him dont you.

ha...yeah, I do know my ant ....the bands and artists I like, I do tend to know alot about...also know alot of stuff that's, I guess, considered to be useless information...did you for instance know that the elephant is the only animal that can't jump? ah, or that someone who drinks coffee runs a 66 % less chance of commiting suicide? bet you didn't

The Ramones and the Rats (as support) toured together back in 1977.   And were of a similar opinion of the fledgling UK scene.

Joe Strummer is quoted as saying the Rats were "The Bay City Rollers of punk!"; and the Rats were also seen as the Irish Pistols.

Punk Rock was a bit like Britpop, with bands denying their part in it all after the fact.  Some people see the Boomtown Rats, Stranglers, Blondie, The Jam, Adam & The Ants and Elvis Costello as punks.  Some don't.

When I first saw and heard the Rats, I saw them as a punk band, rather than a new wave band.  The three of the first four singles certainly played to that.  Only when you delve into the LPs is it clear the Rats weren't as they appeared.

Some interesting links....

"Punk", "new wave", Britpop."  Words created by someone in the marketing department to sell their new product (band).

I couldn't care less what genre a band gets lumped into (and I suspect this is related to why bands will deny their connection to a marketing hook, although it can be argued that many of them intentionally adopt that sound to sell more units, at least at the beginning of their career).

I'm only interested in whether the music affects me on an emotional level; and in the context of this discussion, whether that music still affects me 20+ years later.

Normally it's the likes of NME who create these monickers over here.  About 2/3 years ago they tried to label the current batch of artists as the "New Rock Revolution"

Only thing is no one swallowed it!  Well, except The Edge

http://www.nme.com/news/103540.htm

Even with Glam Rock, I don't remember it being refered to that way until long after the fact.  Even in the NME/MM retrospective recently published of umpteen article at the time, Glam Rock is never used as an all-encompassing term.

Funnily enough, the current era is unnamed.

Watch what you say about my idols!  (Oops - I'll be burning in hell for that.)

OK, now I've looked at the links, and The Edge does not say "New Rock Revolution" anywhere.   Your boys at NME chose to interpret Edge's remarks to fit their own concept.  And BTW, I'm not at all sure Edge succeeded in getting the sound he claims to have been aiming for on HTDAAB.  I think he's gotten there on the tour, though.

As I remember it, the term Glam Rock WAS used in the 70s.
