Midge Ure and Peter Gabriel have announced plans for a Live 8 gig featuring African artists at the Eden Project in Cornwall on July 2nd, it's to be called 'Africa Calling'.The huge event at London's Hyde Park has been criticised for a lack of black artists. Peter says this should balance things out:
"Well I hope in some ways it's still serving the same goal and it is in part a response, I think we would have done it differently.'
'Africa Calling' will be hosted by Peter Gabriel, artists performing on the night include West African vocalist and songwriter Angelique Kidjo, Somalia's female vocalist Maryam Mursal, and Salif Keita.
Also appearing will be: Thomas Mapfumo and Blacks Unlimited Tinariwen Daara J Akim El Sikameya Shikisha Ayub Ogada Modou Diouf & O Fogum For further information on the event at Eden and ticket allocation details, go to www.live8.edenbookings.com
That sounds fantastic. I'm a big fan of Peter Gabriel and I've seen him perform several times, often with African artists. Always very good.
I have to say I find the criticism surrounding this to be wholly unfounded and unnecessary however and more than enough has already been said on the subject.
Unfortunately I can't get tickets as I will be otherwise engaged at Hyde Park, lol!!
Excellent news!!!All right!!!!!!I am especially excited to see Tinariwen on the bill. They show how the blues came from Mali and Niger, and the guitarist has a special sound; he reminds me of Carlos Santana for some reason, although the music is slow & bluesy. This is really good news! I just posted it over to ClubAfrika.
Closing the posts would surely be unreasonable censorship – of the type Bob would find abhorrent
I can’t understand why someone living in London would want to travel 200 miles to Cornwell when the could walk to Hyde Park – and to do this without protesting and complaining.
Considering that Midge Ure TOO will have no black bands at his Edinburgh gig – I wonder why he in involved with the Eden Project one. Are you actually telling me that Midge will be at the Carneell gig and NOT Hyde Park?
Surely the Hyde Park argument about the need to have elitist, mega, globally-branded acts , does not apply to Edinburgh?
