I'm Back!

I've been in Seattle for over a week at the Western States Youth Gathering, for Lutherans living in the western states (go figure). Now I have returned. If anyone wants to duke it out, I'm ready for you.

Here's something: "Meeks idea of exclusive club is everything that bob stands against", "You admit to reading THE SUN???? Some Geldof fan you are! ".

Things like these keep popping up in conversations. How is it that people can even begin to assume Bob Geldof's ideals? His favorite newspaper? His brand of tea? His most liked place? Mor and more, people in this forum are arrogantly suggesting that Bob Geldof would agree with what they do, and disagree with the opposed. In my mind there is but one way for this to stop, and you probably won't let it happen. But...

Let Bob Geldof make a statement based upon the top issues discussed: Edinburgh, London bombings, choice of Live 8 line-up, the future of makingpovertyhistory, how he sees Africa after the G8, things of this nature. I completely understand that he is a busy man. But he has at least one fan here that would truly like to know how he feels about these things.

I'm sick of people making Geldof's opinions for him. Some people do it to make him look good. But they'll exxagerate his views and accomplishments. Others want to bring him down. They use the rhetoric of "Communist"...you get my point. For once I would like to hear a real Bob Geldof opinion on the issues surrounding Bob Geldof.

Would anybody else like to see this?

And feel free to start any other respectful debates. I want to have clean threads from now on. Hate only spawns more of the like. If agreeing to disagree is the only solution, so be it.

yeah, first off...When you're discussing something that you're passionate about, it is very easy to say things you would never say when talking about these things...things you'd never ever say when talking about..erm..painting the house, or something. I'm sure I'm be one of those 'arrogant' people who in someway or another has used him as a bat in the heated arguments we've had here on the forum recently. Yes, you are right..it may be a bit arrogant, and of course we'd all rather hear from the man himself. (not that is likely, but we can always hope...) In the more political discussions maybe saying "bob wouldn't like that, he'd never do that" has no place, but surely in the more laidback topics there's no real harm in having a bit fun..for me anyway, that's different..I don't mind people saying that geldof likes that tea or he likes that colour, I really don't..but as I said, fair enough that it doesn't belong in the ideological/political discussions.

But he has at least one fan here that would truly like to know how he feels about these things.

erm...I think there may be more than one fan who wants to hear from him..

of course! I'd love for him to come on here, even if it only was to post a message..

I want to have clean threads from now on. Hate only spawns more of the like. If agreeing to disagree is the only solution, so be it.

yeah, about that...we've had some discussion here this week or so, about keeping the threads "clean"..which I totally agree with, in the sense that we attack ideas rather than people...attack maybe isn't the best word, but...disagree with! Insulting people for not having the same opinion isn't the "right way" to go, I will never say otherwise, but...I can only speak for myself here, but when certain topics have come up, people stating that Bob only wants to (am I being arrogant again?) make money, gain publicity, he hasn't done enough, he's an arrogant bastard...that upsets me! you know? When I read stuff like that I do get angry, and when we get angry about things we like, it's sometimes hard to keep objective, and clean..Oh I don't know what I'm rambling on about...but..y'know..

oh, and another thing...just in general, I'd like to ask you, the fine people on the forum, do you think that it's ok to say "****" on this forum? Is that crossing the line? Where is the line drawn, wtf? hell, ****? a bit curious to know how you feel about that.. (wouldn't it be ironic if most people said it's not ok to say ****, when being on a geldof forum? )

oh, and welcome back, meekus..

Don't worry Meekus... I don't hate you.  I will take your comments as a psuedo-apology for the way I've been treated by you and others.  Thank you... you are forgiven.

johanna - it's kinda sad really, because before the bob-hata's (and other immature folk) started coming on, profanity was occasionally used and not disputed. Now it seems to be a problem. Personally I don't get offended by any word, even 'the c word,' so I don't mind it being posted. but if it is now a guideline, certain words, please let us know, administrators I know you have a lot on your hands now but no one respectable wants to break any rules...

and, good point - if bob can swear, why can't we?

Maybe we should all chip in and "Book Bob" as is advertised on this very board? Then we could grill him about all these burning issues. I wonder how much it costs to get Bob to speak at a corporate dinner thingy?

We had Kris Akabusi speak at one of our national professional conferences a few years ago. I did enjoy his talk but there was no time for a good Q & A at the end, so maybe this is a crap idea (Can I say "crap"?).

Bob does give a lot of interviews though and there's a lot of info. about the guy and his views out in the public domain already.

The point of my post is that such is the venom that newspaper has piled upon Geldof down the years - especially the fake "having an affair" claims stories during Live Aid (the best bit being neighbours overhearing Bob & Paula rowing in their home...the nearest neighbouring house is quarter of a mile away FFS!) that were done as that paper's revenge for "teaming up" with the Mirror Group of Newspapers over Band Aid - that I fail to see how anyone can call themselves a fan of Geldof whilst financially helping to keep that vicious rag afloat. That's all.

Now it makes more sense. Thank you.

And booking Bob would be good. How much is it?

Hello Meekus!

And here's us all thinking you'd done a runner!

(been to Seattle - great place with the best Philly Cheese chicken burgers in the world!!).

I agree it would be nice to see Bob actually visit this forum (given that it's about him, for his fans etc) but can't see booking him as working - would all members have to contribute to pay his fees? Would these fees go to charity or to him or his promoters? I think the logistics would need to be considered very carefully or it would turn into a free for all (and Argee would probably be forced to close the forum completely!).

Perhaps 10 pertinent questions submitted for him to answer then posted on the board...

Anyway, I don't read the Sun (I think it's a rag) - more of a Scotsman Newspaper or Glasgow Herald person myself..though I do admit to watching Neighbours!! Bring back Scott and Charlene I say!

I was joking when I mentioned "Booking Bob"!! I did click on the link but only got as far as the CV before I chickened out (imaging my children's University savings disappearing.........)

Posting ten good questions sounds a good idea though.

Who's in charge here? Is this idea a goer?

I'm going to go over to the Bob Geldof section of the forum and start a thread on "Questions for Bob".

Maybe someone in charge will pick the nest ten and get them to Bob.........?
