I'm starting this thread in the hope that members will post sensible questions for Bob.......and maybe (who knows?) we might get the best ones forwarded onto him and even get some answers...........?

So I'll start by asking........

Were there any profits from the Live 8 gigs and, if so, where have they gone?

I was thinking of beginning a thread like this very recently, actually...thanks kidneybean for getting the ball rolling

mkay.

 - what are you singing at the end of ‘banana republic?’

 - what is the idea behind/what’s going on in the ‘drag me down’ video?

 - likewise with ‘never in a million years’ video?

 - why do you have a photo of yourself with Ethiopian children in your autobiography, the very same book that you said you, under no circumstances, did NOT want a photo of yourself with Ethiopians?

 - which five BTR songs do you like the best/are you most satisfied with & why?

 - same with solo songs?

 - who sings the higher parts in ‘skin on skin?’

 - what BTR video did you like making the best, and why?

 - what BTR video did you like making the least, and why?

 - what is one of your most memorable moments... while performing live with the BTR?

 - ...while performing live solo?

 - ...with Paula?

 - ...with Jeanne?

 - ...with your children?

 - what traits in people impress you?

 - what traits in people do you loathe?

 - how often to you spend time with your father & sisters?

those are some...I'll post  more if I think of more...heh

Do you like African music and if so, which people? How did you pick Africa and what is your attachment to Africa? Would you like to do this type of show again, say in 10 years? How do you think the first Live Aid benefitted Ethiopia and do you have Ethiopean friends? Would you consider living anywhere in Africa? Thanks for all you have done so far and may God bless you!

thanks for the compliment mouse   yes, these are some things I have been brewing/wondering about ever since I started researching Bob.  And it's hard, because everyone's asked him so many different questions already, a huge variety...I want to ask him Qs that have rarely (or never...even better) been asked of him.  some of the more personal questions are ones which I'm extremely interested in (his replys) since I have not seen them answered or discussed yet.  who knows.  and it's seems quite difficult to impress him or...'click' or 'connect' with him w/o him finding some possible flaw in the interviewer/fan/whomever...just from what televised interviews I've seen with him.  hence the 'what impresses you' question

johanna, great question as well.  how's he getting along musically these days?  any new tunes?

oh...and of course, I'd love to know more about the whole BTR suing him deal, and how he feels about that.

I'd be interested in knowing what his most memorable experiences have been... probably Live Aid or something like that, I guess, but there might be some interesting stories arising from that kind of question.

Or if he's ever going to go on another international tour - I'd love to hear him live!

Apparently there is a chance something like that could happen.  I think it is worth keeping the questions coming, though it may be a while before they get answered

I sent a load of questions with regards to the re-releases a while ago that Tina & Ian were going to pass onto Pete (and possibly Bob) to answer.  But unless they are hiding on the new site somewhere...

Q magazine did this recently (the spark that ignited Clash Wars), but they don't seem to have an online archive.

Is it true you don't like Pink Floyd but do like Cliff Richard (no accounting for taste) ?

Which is your favourite solo track and/or album? (your own of course).

This week I had to do an assignment at school where we had to pretend we had interviewed our favourite pop-star and then write an article about them in Japanese (yes, you read that correctly). No prizes for guessing who I wrote about! We had to answer particular questions, like "How are you?", "Where are you from?" and other such stuff... but two of them got me wondering.

They were: "What are your hobbies?" which can open up some interesting topics, when you think about it

and: "What are you doing next year?" which isn't terribly original, but still something that'd be good to hear about.

It would probably be far off, but I'll pose this question anyway.

After Live Aid, you said you would never do it again. Technically you didn't. Is there any chance of a future Live Aid or Live8 type of event?

Why did Live8 overrun so much? What was going on - was there supposed to be around 15 mins between each act?

- How do you rate Franco Luambo Makiadi?

- 'Live Aid' had no African musicians represented, 'Live 8' had African musicians represented around the fringes and a lot of comment about a patronising attitude to Africa.  If you do another 'Live' event, would African musicians be represented in the main event?

- 'Live Aid' was about famine relief, 'Live 8' was about poverty relief.  What is the next target?

Well reminded me of a couple of questions I had for Bob (both related to Bono). I think she was probably referring to the first:

1. How do you both manage to hold a conversation, when both of you talk for England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and Eire? Who talks, who listens?

2. Please, please do a duet with Bono sometime. I don't want to hear excuses about him singing you out of the hall, that's crap. If you're saying it, I'm closing my ears, I'm not listening

3. That would lead on to how about a CD of duets with all your good friends in the industry, who happen to be my favourite musicians. Would love it.

Apologies if this is too personal, but...

When you sing live and you do your 3 tracks from SA&D, you come back from your dark awful place and sing Mondays. Why do you choose Mondays to be that song, what is it about it that brings you back?

RE: Questions for Pete
Permalink

Back when everyone was excited about the re-releases, I was asked to draft some questions to Pete  (and Bob!).  Here's a slightly re-vamped version.  Perhaps those who have the Geldof anthology may be able to add to this....

  1. It was great to hear the demo tracks which were extras on the first album.  Were there any other tracks from the 1975 demos?   Where and when were they recorded?  Were any other demos made and do any of them exist?

  2. Though I have read the notes about the re-ordering of tracks, I must admit I don't really agree with the philosophy on the whole.  It also seems that it was a late decision as far as the debut album is concerned, as promo versions were in the original order, and no disclaimer was included on the sleeve notes.  I think V Deep is better for the re-ordering, Mondo Bongo is worse, and I'm neutral on In The Long Grass.  As for the debut album, I just listen to the promo, as it's too shocking to contemplate listening to the second best album of the seventies in any other order! Given that people are pretty familiar with the albums and the running order, don't you think this was a radical decision?

  3. A number of B-sides are missing.  That means Born To Burn, Man At The Top, Europe Looked Ugly, A Storm Breaks (instrumental), Nothing Happened Today (live in Singapore) [both from the bonus disc for Charmed Lives], and Banana Republic/Close As You'll Ever Be (live in Cardiff) have yet to appear on CD.  All The Rage has only ever appeared on a German release.  Was there any reason for omitting them?

  4. The biggest sin on the CDs is the wobble at the start of I Can Make It If You Can.  Is there any reason for this?

  5. The singles had slightly different mixes, most frequently abriged. Like Clockwork, I Don't Like Mondays, Someone's Looking at You, Banana Republic, Elephant's Graveyard and House on Fire were all shorter (and in some cases better!). Also Rat Trap had a variation on the Pus & Grime lyric on the single. Given that single versions for Mary of the Fourth Form and Dave (I appreciate these differed markedly, so it is more justified) were on the CDs, why not have these variants as well?

  6. I also noted there were no US mixes of Lucky, Drag Me Down, and Rain on In The Long Grass.  Rain is quite notorious, a lot of people have heard of it, but few have heard it. I find the UK versions superior, but as curiosities couldn't these have been included on the reissues?

  7. One of the most obvious omissions is ...House Burned Down from V Deep.  I accept it is little more than a reprise, but again, why was it discarded?

  8. The Ha Ha Has have moved to the end of The Fine Art of Surfacing.  I always thought these were integral to Sleep (and they make more sense there).  Why have they been moved to the end of the original album?

  9. There is no gap in Cheerio, which takes away a lot of sense from it.  Is there any reason for not preserving the gap?

  10. The spoken introduction (and the final pay-off of "What's all this got to do with Punk Rock then?") are both missing from Do the Rat.  Is there any reason for this?  Is it simply pandering to political corrrectness?

  11. The vinyl LP I have has the single version of Dave, but the album version here is quite different. I know it was on the recent Best of, but where did this album version of Dave come from? Was it ever released before?

  12. I know that the band tried other producers on Tonic, Surfacing and V Deep, before returning to Mutt Lange and Tony Visconti.   I even heard about a reggae version of I Don't Like Mondays.  Are there any unheard pleasures around?  Are there any plans to release them ?  Maybe as downloads on the bobgeldof.info site.

  13. Is it just my turntable, or are some of the tracks faster than the originals?  As an example, Joey's on the Street Again seems significantly faster.

  14. There are some session tracks and live tracks on the reissues.  The rest of the 1977 John Peel BBC session tracks were released as extra tracks on the Geldof Crazy single. The 1978 Peel sessions along with the BBC recording from Middlesex Polytechnic the same year would make a great CD. The sets from Self Aid/Live Aid are also  What chance is there of a live album or a sessions album?

  15. People do have some of these tracks in their private collections, and would be willing to distribute them. Would you contemplate providing missing tracks as downloads on the official site?

my own theory is that the words are more important, that's just the way it seems when listening to your albums...

well these are the same Q's as on the other question thread but here goes:

- what inspires you to write your songs

- how do you actually go about writing your songs eg. i start with the title and when i've thought of it i use it in my chorus or i always have a cup of tea before i write a song  .

- any wierd compulsive habits?

 stupid finnicky picky question :

- you said in your latest book " geldof in africa " that your i pod is already broken . i thought you hated pc's so how did you put your music on it in the first place

There's no way I'd have the time to beat it into some sort of coherent shape for an interview.......

I've another question for Bob.......

Would you ever consent to appear on an episode of Trinny and Susannah's show? If it was for Comic Relief?

If not could you volunteer Vince? (Please???)

Bit of a boring non-musical question, but....

Given the chance, I would like to ask Bob about the AIDS crisis in Africa.  Although the drugs are technically getting in, even though some leaders would prefer them not to be, i have heard stories about them being resold back to this country because there is money to be had by doing that (some ended up in southampton), and africans being sold asprin instead.  I would like to know if he thinks this is something that can be changed by the west, or needs to be addressed by Africa's political systems.  And also if things are changing over there, as apparantly its there own government thats causes most of the problems, and deliberately keeps it own people down?

I doubt all the questions will be asked/answered.  But keep them coming.  More questions for the rest of the band would be good.  No idea when this will happen though.

Hi All,

My questions would be;

What's the lates update with the other Rats members legal challenge on royalties and how has this effect your relationship with them?

Do you still have an issue with Simon after he went to the press?

Have ye listened to the any of the former Rats stuff and what did ye think?

Hey Mr. G,

How do you cope with your young family being absorbed into this new yout culture - the like of Pussy Cat Dolls, Little Britain, Ali G, etc.

Hi Cazzy,

You are not watching RTE's coverage of the World Cup by any chance? Or maybe Bill O'Herlihy's stalker No. 243 IRL?

Wonder what Sir Bob Of Geldof thinks if he logs on to this thread?

Hi Cazzy,

Obviously I was tired as well and also am World Cupped out. He uses the phrase "okey dokey" all the time. God, this sound so sad in the cold light of day but I thought it was hilarious at the time. Pretend that question never happened!

To wind up some of his fans?  Or maybe to make us appreciate the other songs even more??  Or maybe he had a ghost writer who composed it, then took him hostage and drugged him and made him do it against his will ....  Maybe we should have a vote on which is the most likely reason!  Any other suggestions?

I'd like to ask Bob if he has a big ego? Has he  ever felt shy or socially awkward or tongue tied? Just because he always seems to be confident and have something to say.

Dear Bob

Are you going to do another album?

What is your next plan of action?

Any other projects looming at all?

Would you describe yourself as vain?

and do you believe in star signs?

what will you do after your tour?

when can we meet you next?

did i make you feel like an object when i asked you a second time for your photo?

thank you
