HI- I was just thinking about two of the Rats more experimental songs with a jazz flavour The Little Death and Walking Down Town. The former is about heroin/drug addiction as the sorta lazy feel of the music,I think ,matches the languid drug state of almost non being. The lyrics read very well. Its obviously a long way from their more punky type songs.
Walking Down Town again has the theme of drugs lurking in the background with its "junkie town" refrain and jazzy smoky feel - again it shows the Rats as capable of creating pretty sophisticated atmospheres and this song was chosen by a few posters as one of the Rats best b sides which I agree with. The song has a great urban desolate feel with great lyrics.
They could've gone on the Fast Show Jazz Club ....wunderbar!

I like both songs. I think Walking Down Town was written in 1984 so it could not have appeared on V Deep but it would have suited the mood of that album.
Anybody looking for amusement should watch Jazz Club from the Fast Show - all the sketches are available on Youtube...fantastic!
Hey you should go on one of the jazz music forums and say that as an agent provocateur or WUM or is that a jazz Club intro from the Fast Show (on the extras dvd which they didn't use!)
To me w***** music is country and western incl alt. country, metal, heavy or otherwise and U2.

Got to be honest and say these are two of my least favourite Rats' tracks.
Fair play to them for experimenting and proving their versatility, but for me it didn't work. Doesn't 'get' to me at any level I'm afraid, musically or lyrically. Even Charmed Lives made sufficient impression that I actively disliked it...these two just leave me completely indifferent.

Ah, I just quoted The Commitments.
I think Jazz is wanker music as it it very self indulgent. Country is just sh!t, bar one or two exceptions. Metal if done well is good (I'm thinking Motorhead, Iron Maiden and AC/DC) and poor old U2, they used to be good. Before Bono got the sunglasses.

Yes, Charmed Lives I can actively dislike, whereas the others I just don't care about. I don't think of either too much.
Love Walking Downtown, but a flavour of jazz in it? Hmmm can't hear that.
I think its a really good track too Ian. The opening has a fifties, jazzy chord progression rather than the whole song. Am I the only person who appreciates that wasted, cynical feel in the lyrics that I feel is a real indicator of Bob Geldof and a lot of the Rats music. Its lyrically a companion piece to So Strange, The Bitter End, Late Last Night, Skin On Skin. Think I've listened to the songs often enough and took note of the lyrics to notice this.
I though Geldof's late night ramble through Junkie Town as interesting subject matter well executed and musically complex with lots going on. Perhaps the lines "We eat well, we sleep well and that's saying something these days..." contrasted the bands fortunes in the latter days with the less lucky drug addicts all around.
I'll be contriversal and say I think its more interesting than Mondays- or at least less familiar.
The Little Death again is a drug themed song full of the same detached feel- looking on from the outside. Anyway appreciation is in the eye of the beholder. If I was to choose a dull Rats song it may be Precious Time but for me there are few really "bad" tracks. If the band hadn't made a huge impression on me I wouldn't be here writing about them today.
Walking Downtown is quite good, but I have no time for The Little Death. OK they were experimenting, but I thought then and still think now it is the poorest track on V Deep.
This got me thinking about their 'b' sides, which were for the most part really good. My favourite track is Real Different, but tracks such as Late last night and It's all the rage are also outstanding. A lot of this is down to the strength of the songwriting/lyrics which is where I agree with Noel on WD, although it never gets played when the 9 year old is on board!
Now if I could just work out the exact lyrics to IATR.........
