For what its worth does anybody think if the original Boomtown Rats line-up was to get together again could they come up with a good album? I know its an unlikely scenario but other bands have done it.

I'm not naive, deluded or whatever but I still think Geldof and the five others had a unique feel to their music which would stand up today- however different it might sound. I suppose all bands have a particular chemistry and I for one would be curious as to what they could do- but this is probably not likely to happen. Its one of those what if type questions.

I think they'd work well today, as ArrGee has said with band like the Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Franz Ferdinand - and I'll add the Arctic Monkeys in that too - their alternative rock gentre would fit and they could do well.  We are dreaming though...

If it were possible i think they could do ok for one album, maybe do a tour with another 70/80's band or a few summer festivals. However after that i would suspect it would be difficult to keep the momentum going and i fear it wouldn't last.

The Boomtown Rats are just one in a line of bands that write melodic intelligent pop which is timeless going back to the Stones and The Beatles and the bands you mention are just the current holders of that particular flame. Its curious how bands can be alike and quite different at the same time. The bottom line is good music is good music and however much I like the ' Rats I find it exciting to look for and discover new music.

I agree with you Ian,  but I don't think they would record more than one album. Its really an enquiry into whether they would do something which would fit in with their past and not be a disappointment or a letdown.  One can only surmise how it might sound but I feel it would be a good last hurrah. I think they could sell out all over Europe, America and the world if they did a proper reunion- but I'm not holding my breath.
