If I'm ever going to find the answer to this question it has to be on here. It's only been driving me mad for 32 years.
What exactly are the two lines I've never seen listed on any sleeve / Smash Hits / Songbook / You name it, just after 'Hey Billy, take a walk with me' and as the sax starts to come in?
hi - I can't make out those two lines either. The first one may be "something/ something answers to me.".. then "swing hard and swing free".
It was probably an impromptu ad lib kept in the recording for spontaneity.
I am missing the lyrics for No Hiding Place, and some of Europe Looked Ugly I can't make out.
PS- I hate albums that come without a lyric sheet. Some of the Manic Street Preacher stuff is so hard to make out without the words.
Second line sounds plausible..I've always thought it might be "sweet hearts swing free" (Billy & Judy) but never really convinced myself. As for first bit...thought the last word was "misery" but no real idea what precedes it.
No Hiding Place lyrics are listed in full on the reissue CD for V Deep. Can PM those if you want? Will have to listen to Europe Looked Ugly again and see if there's any I'm not sure of.
Iv been trying to work out europe looked ugly lyrics for a long time but to no avail
I can understand most of it. Again why do bands expect people to understand every word they sing. That song by REM, the Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight always bugged me so it must be fairly common for bands to hear back incorrect lyrics from fans. Kevin Rowland of Dexy's was another culprit with his slurred singing- open to weird interpretations without having the words to hand.

Those missing lyrics in Rat Trap will remain one of rock musics great unsolved mysteries!
When all the remasters came out I had to limit myself so I purchased the first album, Surfacing, and long Grass. I also bought the Rats on film DVD and the Geldof four album anthology for all the missing bits and Bobs. I bought the Hammersmith 78 DVD too so that was enough to be going on with.
If it's not too much inconvenience you may pm those No Hiding Place lyrics . I would much appreciate that. I used to listen to that song back in the day and again couldn't fully make out all the words. You can disabuse me of any incorrect words I've been singing to myself for years.
Thanks Suss.

Iv been trying to work out europe looked ugly lyrics for a long time but to no avail
My interpretation has always been as follows. There's one bit highlighted I've never quite caught. Happy to hear if anyone thinks different to these.....ps. Hadn't listened to this one for quite a while - a great track.
Europe looked ugly the very last time that I saw her,
Cold and so empty she sucks in her teeth and looks tired.
She picks up her skirt, still coy, but no longer worth knowing.
She grins toothlessly, you can see the light die in her eyes.
Im taking my time, Im taking my time, I wont hurry.
Ill sit and Ill watch the last train wont leave for a while.
And the buildings themselves seem to sigh from the effort of standing,
While the trees and the people are bent from the effort of dying.
So I watched her from the window as she opened her legs wide before me,
And the train slithered by on its tracks like steel slug on slime.
And me, I keep thinking (Im? bout?) the iron that surrounds and protects her,
Cause a chastity belt for a whore seems almost to sublime.
Oh oh, what do we do now?
With you and your stories, we feel sorry for you. Yeah we do.
I dont like my body, the things that it needs just disgust me.
I dont like my mind, the things that it thinks arent quite sane.
But I can still function as normal so long as my mouth moves.
They think its still kosher, Im lucky they cant see my brain.
Hey hey, oh oh, what do we do now?
With you(me) and your(my) stories, we feel sorry for you. Yeah we do.
Europe looked ugly the very last time that I saw her.
Brilliant work Suss on those Europe lyrics - they're exactly the same as I my interpretation. The only slight divergence is I've always though the line went "Bent from the effort of time" rather than effort of dying but I may be wrong.
These lyrics are amongst Geldof's finest- the weary cynical world view gets me every time.
If I try to transcribe lyrics it usually takes me ages and I end up getting tired of the track. The internet is really good for tracking down lyrics.

Just did a bit of digging for the blood and tears/sweat line from other post and unearthed sing365.com which reckons the line after 'take a walk with me' is 'do you want that misery?'. Think I'll settle for that......
"Do you want that misery" sounds on the ball to me too. Mystery solved!
Those song lyrics sites are a bit funny- sometimes theyhave the official lyrics and sometimes they have fans posting what the believe the lyrics to be. This is especially true of albums that come without lyrics sheets.
Another thing that bugs me is albums that come without any lyrics but will have ten pages of arty design work as insert. Or the lyrics will be printed in indecipherable handwriting or with some obscure unreadable font with clashing colour background. As they say, really, whats the point?
They think its still kosher, Im lucky they cant see my brain.
Considering this might be an anti-EEC song, I always thought that line was:
"They can steal your culture | it's lucky they can't steal your brain"
Wouldn't bet the car on it though.
PS Out of interest, how are you sure you have the Rat Trap lyric correct? (Not doubting you at all, always thought it was what you said, except I would have plumped for "swing high" rather than "swing wild").

Jules is right, I just took an opportunity to ask so I'm confident on the Rat Trap lyric, but you certainly have me wondering about that line in Europe Looked Ugly, which was only ever my interpretation, and it never did make perfect sense. Will have to listen again now.
