bet Bob is not too pleased - no

Wasn't one of the ideas behind this particular company to do local tv in Ireland?  Great stuff - would like to see very localised tv all over england too.

Your thoughts?

Samuel Beckett the other great Irish malcontent, after Bob of course, famously had a play called Waiting for Godot in which nothing happens twice according to a French critic who saw it at the time.

Haha Noel you are obviously the wit on this forum.

Seriously it wouldn't have to be nothing it could for instance be anything.

Eg. local soaps, comedy, music, plays, theatre, advertising, discussion, information about people.

Ideally it would be made up of local people and lets face it people are interesting whether they are rich beyond comparison or live in a council flat on disability benefit or unemployment benefit, they still got something to say, or beliefs and opinions and may want to get into local community stuff or have an idea of wht goes on.

So much you read in the paper is about muggings, shootings etc. etc. theres not much good stuff, not surprising community is damaged and peopel don't even know their next door neighbours.

Imagine how powerful a tool local tv could be and effective in increasing community spirit etc. etc. if in the right hands.

I thought about going to see that play as it featured Ian McKellen & Patrick Stewart... but then I read what it was about... and it sounded bloomin' boring... so I couldn't be arsed to get tickets.

Sounds a bit like a play I went to see last night. It dragged and not much happened but think it was all about atmosphere building in the bits where nothing much happend, mind you 2 significant things did happen during the course of the 50 minute play that only lasted about 10 minutes, if that. Content was quite sad really, but also moving I thought.

It was Krapps Last Tape with Michael Gambon, in fact Michael Gambon is literally the only man in it. Moody I thought. But can see why some thought it boring and too non-eventful.

Ireland is a very sparsely populated country with just under five million people in the Republic and about two million people in Northern Ireland so a lot of life is very provincial and nothing much happens to warrant a local tv service.

Sky news pulled their Irish national news service due to lack of interest and there are so many stations available never mind other sources of diversion, and with the economy as it is maybe now is not the time.

If it could be done on a non commercial basis  just for the benefit of the local community I agree with the points you make. Unfortunately money talks and in Britain ITV runs its local services with an eye to profit.

I suppose a cheaper version would be some sort of Internet  based service serving a local community. In small town Ireland there's always the local gossip or going to the pub!

There are loads of local radio stations in Ireland- I suppose you could log on to some  and listen out for the exciting things going on and they might have a webcam pointing at the local High Street.

Of course Krapps Last Tape is by Beckett also. Becket's whole philosophy was that people are just filling  in time waiting for death so his view of life was pretty cynical and he was a depressive which informs most of his work. His work can be seen as humorous to some and it is slow and methodical basically asking what is the point of it all!

Those looking for a fun night out or a first date should avoid. It would be like Woody Allens character in Annie Hall bringing his date to see The Sorrow and the Pity .

All Becketts plays were made into filmed versions by RTE  the Irish TV service a few years ago directed by various stage and film directors but it is hard going!
