Urban Soundscapes Live! 27 Nov 10
Gerry Cott will play a series of one-off performances of Urban Soundscapes in acoustically and architecturally interesting venues. I wonder would Gerry ever loose the run of himself and launch into a Rats medley and smoke a cigarette onstage. He was a heavy smoker in the old days with the band.

I'd say it was highly unlikely. The Rats medley that is. And I suppose the fags as he won't be allowed to smoke indoors.

Well then how about Gerry doing his Gerry Cot-ts Greatest Hits - Lone Ranger and Alphabet Town etc. I always seem to remember Gerry with a cigarette hanging out of his gob, as they say in Dublin.
Of course Gerry is well known for being a campaigner against alcohol abuse and the gig is in a church and its on at half seven so it all seems a bit Puritanical.
He was a decent singer so I wonder does or can he still hold a tune? Anybody that can write a song like Alphabet Town should be noteworthy. I always think its a pity he didn't intermittently write original songs so that he could have a cult following. His urban soundscapes project is good but in a way not writing new songs makes me feel a little less interested.
Went along to this and have to say, stupid as it sounds, it was just like being in church. The event was in support of Cobham Heritage Trust so 'congregation' (around 200 I'd guess) was predominantly townsfolk of, how can I put this, at least Gerry's age. Everyone sat in reverent silence throughout, not even whispering, with just polite applause between tunes. I needed to cough at one point but held out till end of the song for fear of being excommunicated.
That said, giving full attention to Gerry on his own made me realise just what a genius the guy is with a guitar. I'm not a musician but you would be forgiven for thinking two people were playing is my simple analysis. His little anecdotes between songs giving the story or inspiration behind them were amusing too.
Once you put any memories of his Rats days out of your head (not easy as he did refer to them a fair bit) and just concentrated on the different style at face value it was actually a really enjoyable performance.
Gerry mentioned that Bob had planned to attend (would have been cool) but had to dip out late in the day for a trip to India. Still managed to text Gerry on the night and ask how it was going we we told just after the interval though. Nice touch.
Had a brief chat with Gerry afterwards. Really humble and unassuming guy. Glad I made the effort to pop along. Anyone else get there??
Suss--We went along to Cobham after leaving Whyteleafe and had a look around,but after a long debate decided to head off home not being sure what the weather held in store. Glad it went well although i'm not sure that it would have been my thing.Hope to see you at the January gigs--regards Wes

For some reason I am very surprised that Bob and Gerry are in contact at all but its good to know-maybe maturity means that both realise they were part of a significant musical entity and had some good times together.
Even if Gerry doesn't perform Rats materiel he has always been proud to have been in The Boomtown Rats as has said so in interviews. I'm generally into musicians doing whatever sort of music they like so feel open minded about Urban Soundscapes.
I've said already I would be more interested in Gerry writing original songs- anybody who hears Alphabet Town knows he has the capability. His alternate career as animal trainer probably gives him a good living so he doesn't have to sing for his supper, as it were!
