Just wondering is it "normal" to be "obsessed" with a pop group. Somebody please help!

It's normal around here.  There's more of us than there is of them...smile

Noel,

Don't worry - you're not alone.

Not sure of your reasons but for me the Rats (I'm guessing you are referring to Rats!) arrived at that early teen age where everyone seems to latch on to one artist or another and is in their own mind the greatest fan. I also related to the fact they weren't the coolest in town smile.gif

Confess my ardour did dampen considerably after band's demise, although I've never been able to avoid checking in record shops over last 25 years for any material I wasn't aware of. That said, I have successfully resisted any urge to trawl internet for rarities, but maybe that's down to laziness and mortgage driven stinginess, not to mention the inevitable withering looks from Mrs Suss, so there is some hope for me.

Recent obsession is I've decided a combination of escapism and nostalgia. I'm loathe to concede there's any mid-life crisis going on!

I'm obsessed by a few.  Don't think it's that normal, but what the heck.  Seeing the Rats playing later this month, and probably Pulp next year.   I thought I had packed in the concerts a couple of years ago.  Ah well one last blast I guess unless Bowie turns up somewhere late next year.

Jules/ Suss/ Joan of Arc/ ArrGee- appreciate your replies. I agree that we probably all started to like the Rats at the teenage years stage when we are undoubtedly impressionable but there are loads of co factors as well.

When one thinks of the various possibilities for obsession liking a band if fairly ok. Isn't James May obsessed by cars and what about all the lifelong football fans who for years obsess about their favourite teams. What about the train spotters and the people on Gardeners Question time!

I suppose once we're not following the Rats around with secret cameras things will be ok! I can't do that  'cos I live in Ireland!

Perhaps what really bugs me is the sometimes bad press the Rats get from various music journalists. I consider myself to have pretty good taste in music and see the Rats up there holding their own in the upper echelons of good music. I just wish they had gotten a bit more credit. One thing is they never sold out in terms of compromising what they were about. Its a pity that more people don't know how good they were recording In The Long grass.

Hey I'm slightly obsessed with medieval history and archaeology. If anybody has ever read the technical aspects or reports of archaeological digs it may not be for everyone. But I can't get enough of archaeology. It is just a hobby and interest I've had since been fascinated by all the old castles that dot the Irish countryside. It's a bit like detective work, putting together clues from sometimes limited evidence and coming to conclusions.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek about being obsessed with the Rats- they are my favourite band and I grew up loving music. Of course every band has and always have had their "well 'ardcore" fans.

I went to see the great sixties band Love a few years ago with a friend and thought they were brilliant live. They came back to play the Ambassador Theatre in Dublin a few months later with the full Forever Changes orchestra but my friend didn't want to go to see them again saying it would be a bit like going to see the Rocky Horror Show. The point being too much of a good thing...etc The point also being that some people will go to see a band over and over when they play live and when does that start to be some sort of maybe weird obsession. Like the guy who shot Ronald Reagan in 1981 Mark Chapman  (not the 5 live football presenter!) He saw the movie Taxi Driver  over twenty times. I'M starting to ramble at  this stage but you get my point I hope.
