Why are older bands (when they start) better?

Not as old as the Stones, but in general some of the better bands in my experience didn't break through until their lead singer (and most of the band) had lived a bit.

Examples....

  • The Boomtown Rats

  • Blondie

  • Teardrop Explodes - Cope though youngish (23) was married!

  • Happy Mondays

  • Pulp

  • Franz Ferdinand

On the contary, bands who got famous when young aren't all that interesting to me.

So plenty of hope for us old geezers

What kind of music do you play ArrGee? What about appearing as a support act for Bob sometime? I wonder if it could be arranged

If your theory is correct (though I'm trying to think of examples that prove the contrary), then it's because the band have reached a certain degree of maturity! As a band and as people. They've played long enough (together?) to find their golden mean, of knowing who plays which role in the band.

A question - when does "old" start?

It is impossible to sing anything well...without an IMMENSE amount of practice...

...even if you are a "virtuoso"...you have to practice very very very much to not flub the lines...

...in that respect...you must be "quite right"...

I think that could be because their songs reflect their different life experiences. The songwriter(s) are able to convey those experiences in unique and memorable ways.

Peace & take care,
debm
