Ian is proposing a get together or "mingle" of Rats/Geldof fans , probably in London.
The bobgeldof.com Mingle - Ian Gibbons from bobgeldof.com is kicking an idea about. Now we have active Facebook and Twitter profiles, there could be an opportunity to have regular events when likeminded fans of the Rats/Geldof come together (isn't that a Beatles track, Ian?) and just socialise. Ian has had vast experience as a promoter of both indie / folk / acoustic stuff for more years than he cares to admit. The idea is quite simple, maybe twice a year we use the opportunity to display rare items of memorabilia etc... and possibly some interesting live performances. He is looking for feedback on this to see if there is enough interest to start the planning process. Ideas are welcome. He thought the first event, if people want this, should be in London, perhaps at the Hope & Anchor in Islington, or, after Ian's recent visit to the Cobden Club, that might be a great venue. Ian said 'I know many people, such as Ian Westwood, that have a treasure trove of Rats memorablia, I have quite a lot of stuff myself that most people have never seen or heard. I thought we could have guest DJ's playing during the event and possibly finish it of with some interesting live performances. If there is enough inteerest I will put the idea to Gerry Cott, Martin Stephenson, of course Tina. Can you email indicate by email your level of interest to tina@bobgeldof.com

Mike Peters of the Alarm does an annual Gathering in Llandudno consisting of a weekend of Alarm related events and gigs. Friday night he plays an acoustic set, saturday afternoon there is a pub quizz and film show, Saturday night he plays an electric set followed by an after gig party and then sunday morning there is a knock-out five a side competition that he takes part in. Peters/The Alarm are as totally uncool as Geldof/The Boomtown Rats and sell as few records these days, but because it is aimed at a niche market it is successful taking over whole hotels for the weekend and offering ticket and accommodation packages. And afterwards the gigs are then available to purchase on cd as a momento of the weekend. Whether Geldof would put that much effort into a weekend and be a true man of the people like Peters is, is not for me to say.
Key to success is clearly the right venue in terms of capacity and ticket pricing and also a location that people can 'sell' to their partners/families who may not be interested in the group but fancy the weekend away.
I remember a great Geldof theatre gig at Tamworth to promote SAD. That would probably be the right size...though not sure its location is sufficiently attractive. But would see it having more success there than in London where there are too many alternative music attractions that he'd be competing against.
The Wedding Present do a similar mini one day festival in Brighton each year where there are various gigs from past and present members off-shoot bands with the main band on as the finale. The success has resulted in there also being a northern day at Holmfirth (Last of the Summer Wine Country) this year.
Just a thought!

Yes the Mike Peters Gathering is a great event. I think the idea is that peeps just get together for a fun event. Its only an idea it might not be worth doing but i for one would like to see Gerry Cotts acoustic show.
