Martin Scorsese's film "Bob Dylan: No Direction Home"....
Just aired in the US on PBS, should be repeating shortly. Apparently it aired in the UK on Monday, perhaps it will repeat there, too?
I'm neither a Scorsese nor a Dylan fanatic, but this is a brilliant documentary. Good enough for me to understand why these men have all those diehard fans.
This covers the early Dylan, a period of his I've always liked. After seeing the film, I think I was young enough for these songs to be the background music for my childhood without my ever really taking the time to appreciate them. The live performance clips are amazing, as is the way Scorsese puts it all into context - including interviews and performance clips of people in Dylan's universe at the time (Joan Baez among them - and oh, what she has to say!) (and the seemingly endless press conferences, being asked inane question after inane question*) (and the annoying autograph seekers*) (and Pete Seeger's reaction at the Newport Folk Festival) (and on and on and on).
(*These caused me to have greater sympathy for the nasty side of BG.)
I highly recommend seeing this if you can. I'm sure it will be out on DVD in time for Christmas (Ian, I think you ought to get a copy as a Christmas present for BG).
oh right.it said on bbc yesterday in one of the adverts for it, *bbc ad voice* 'bob dylan, no direction home.tonight and tommorrow at 9'.it was very good tho
