Should be available on RTE's player which can be accessed from outside ROI to watch to your heart's content.

I find the RTE player never works for anything I want to watch as they slap a not allowed to view outside Ireland message on it.  Much like the BBC iPlayer when I go elsewhere.

Thank God we live so close to Britain, otherwise Ireland would be a complete dump. RTE television is not very good and Irish radio is generally rubbish so most Irish people consume British media a lot of the time, and listen to British pop music, never mind being obsessed with Premiership football.

You should check again to see if you can watch the RTE Player as I think in the last six months its up and running- maybe for copyright reasons some programmes are unavailable outside Ireland, not that there's that much to watch.

I love going to Ireland and watching GAA on TV (alas no more in the UK since Setanta's demise) and the football coverage on Champions League is far better.  As for the music, there has been a dearth of bands of any note coming from Ireland for a long time.  The last new band I really liked was JJ72 and that was about 10 years ago.  I know there are a few others like The Script, Bell X1, but none are very interesting to me.

I would seriously consider living in Ireland but for the weather and the high cost of living.

I think it is copyright issues that stop RTE showing programmes I want to watch outside Ireland.

There are lots of things both right and wrong about Ireland depending on what mood I'm in. When you live in a place you see those things that visitors may not take in. Its the same no  matter where you come from.  I think its a good idea to get away as often as possible so that there's always somewhere interesting to go and you get away from boring routine and sameness.

I've never been into Gaelic sports much. The sports  I like are football, rugby particularly international games, tennis, cricket, and athletics. RTE panelists tends to over intellectualise its coverage of the Champions League- it is only a football game after all- or maybe your biased with Liam Brady often on the panel. Only joking.

No band from Ireland could ever equal the Boomtown Rats- what band ever had the personality, the sheer brilliance and excitement. Who could ever equal Bob Geldof as a frontman?

Having said that each band is different and like you I'm not too up to speed on Irish rock, so I better not make any pronouncements. A few bands I've seen on tv like The Blizzards seem good but I'd need to check them out a bit more. One band called Rollerskate Skinny who were around in the early nineties were pretty distinct, rather than the usual Irish, guitar heavy sub U2 effort the country seems to churn out.

I was thinking more of Eamonn Dunphy!  There have been some cracking evenings with him, Souness and Giles.  I reckon Johnny fancies giving him a bit of the old dirty Leeds treatment.

I noticed when I was in Belfast while I could access RTE Player I could only watch certain programmes. For those outside Ireland who want to check will they be able to watch One Night Only go to this link http://www.rte.ie/player/#!v=1104846 from the first episode last night and if that works you will be able to watch Bob's. It will be up on the site next Saturday morning. My DVD recorder is out of action but if I manage to get it working I'll try and make DVD's but can't promise anything at the moment.

Or Spain confuse RTE have their videos blocked from downloading but I've found a website which claims to be able to do it. I'll try this Saturday and if it fails I will see if my computer genius better half can do it for me. If I succeed I'll make DVD's for anyone who wants them. smile

I watched it and it was very good.  Gonna try and download it tomorrow.

Update... Well I downloaded the free trial of the software and it does appear to work but after a couple of minutes a pop up appeared and told me that the free trial would only allow 10 minutes and it is $59 dollars which I ain't gonna pay at this time disbelief

This programme normally pulls in half a million people so Geldof's appearance should have drawn roughly that ( unless they all switched off, and given the lack of esteem for his music in this country that cannot be ruled out)

Rem population of ROI is 4.1 m people. I'd think a Geldof interview with Gay Byrne would be good solid entertainment and not a lazy love in full of trivial questions.

Didn't see the prog as I went to Galway on Saturday on the train!

Let me rephrase - Did anyone on this forum see the programme?  And what happened?

I saw it but as my other half was with me I missed bits but there was nothing new in it. Rat Trap, GSOI, Banana Republic, Dazzled by You and one other song which I can't remember now were performed. I'm gonna try and watch it again alone before it disappears Friday and then I'll add more but I actually preferred his appearance on Top Gear more.

Ok I watched this again and on my own this time and think I was a little harsh last night. It was actually a well rounded interview spanning his entire life so far and one hilarious moment when he demonstrated how he used to walk backwards as a child. I remember hearing about that before but has forgotten til now. Lots of chat about his Rats days and of course Paula and about how Jeanne has changed his life. Gaybo was really nice to him and at the end said that he has known Bob along time and how great it is to see him so happy and he hopes Bob stays this happy. The song I couldn't think of last night was How I Roll. The songs sounded great but poor Bob was sick and was on Lemsips before he sang. The band were in great form and sounded amazing as always. It is a shame this is disappearing off RTE Player Friday as shows normally stay there for a month and in that time I might have found a way to download it but won't be around the next 2 days. Something tells me though that RTE will release the entire series on DVD and even if they don't I'd imagine it will be repeated at some stage.

Does anyone know if Bob has done a live version of Mary Says? Was listening to this song a few days ago and the lyrics are incredible and it's just such an emotional tune-

"Beheaded suns will light her crooked pathway/six-pointed stars illuminate her road/Amputee moons guide her through her darkest nights/ and silver armies help to ease her load...."

"She says her problem with these endless summers/ is endless summers always have to end/the thinning sky is throwing lovely shadows/the summers gone and autumn almost spent...."

Couldn't help thinking of the chorus when Amy winehouse died- "Everybody's always saying goodbye/Everybody's got some place to leave....

He played Mary Says live at the showcase in Berlin, early this year.

Thanks I'll look out for that version from Berlin. He hasn't played it too often looking at the set lists from other recent concerts, but for me I think it would have made a good single- much better than Silly Pretty Thing.
