Very interesting.  This must be Geldof's first appearance in Ireland for quite some time and at a full on rock festival (well pretty full on).   Would have been good to have done this, but I'm seeing Pulp a few days earlier in London anyway and doubt my wife would let me traipse off to Ireland to watch bands in a muddy field for the weekend.  Arcade Fire as well.  Pretty good festival.

And Bob Geldof has also been added to the line-up.

Sir Bob is to perform Boomtown Rats hits as well as songs from new album How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell.

...

The Picnic takes place at Stradbally Hall, Co Laois, from Friday September 2 to Sunday September 4.

Weekend tickets are 240.

The big draws are Arcade Fire, Pulp...

I got a free weekend pass to this last year and am gonna hold off buying a ticket incase I get another one this year but if I don't I'll buy one as it isn't too far to travel and will be a hell of a lot cheaper then going the UK dates. Have to say though The Electric Picnic is a class above other festivals and there is so much more than music to see and if any of ye can make it I highly recommend it. It used to be that tickets could only be bought for the full weekend but this year Sunday only tickets can be bought and according to Bob's website he is performing on the Sunday.

Changed title of post accordingly.  See Pulp on the same day smile

Doesn't it always rain at festivals in Ireland, making the Somme seem like more fun. Nice to see that Geldof is on the bill, though I think the audience average age would be early twenties so Bob's appearance will not mean much unfortunately. The kids like the Script, though the Boomtown Rats would tear strips off a band like that in a head to head intergenerational shindig.

I didn't feel particularly old at the recent wireless festival.  I would say the average age at a festival would be more like late thirties than early twenties.  And on the stage, the average age can be over fifty like when Morrissey was followed by Bono and pals at Glastonbury this year.  The more established bands tend to go down better as people often remember them from their youth.  Looking at the ticket prices for some festivals, you'd have to be able to get some equity release to pay for them.

I was probably thinking about the recent Oxygen festival in Ireland, when I remember seeing loads of mainly under twenty fives heading off to the trenches and the mudbath in Naas. I generally prefer indoor concerts with a headline band and one or two supports rather then the a  la carte drunken stumble around to find a band that outdoor festivals can be.

Wouldn't worry too much about age- remember we built this city on rock and roll.

Me too.  Smaller the venue the better, but the odd gig in a field is no bad thing.  I've never done the camping.  Just a day tripper.

Oxegen attracts the kids but EP is actually an older crowd and much more civilised. I've never done the camping either and only made it down for one day last year as I only found out at the last minute about my free ticket. I will probably go to a couple of days this year though if I get another freebie but I'll come home at night. While I prefer intimate gigs I do like the gigs in fields too and have graced Slane with my presence a few times.
