Cadogan Hall - you'll be sorry if you missed it.

I suppose if I had to go to a Geldof concert, which I finally did tonight then the least that could happen would be three Rats on stage.

All in all a pretty good evening, had a good bit of banter with suss, Derek The Dane and Joan of Arc before and after in the pub.  Nice to meet Scottie as well who was quite charming and incredibly forgiving of our previous disagreements.  Also I finally got to meet Ian who kindly gave me a signed poster, with much envy from the others who headed down the pub afterwards.

As for the concert, well, I could almost (and I mean almost) have written a review in advance.  For the most part it was a lot of Geldof solo stuff boring the ar$e off me in my comfy front row seat,  interspersed with some nice gems.  The best live songs were not just the Rats songs (obviously), but most of the Sex Age & Death songs (Mudslide, One for Me and of course Scream in Vain) and the How Can I Compose songs, Systematic Six Pack and a very good Here's To You for all his mates in the audience.  Coming away feeling that the Geldof songs off the last couple of albums were among the best of the set was the surprise.

Mondays sounded like it had passed its sell by date.  When people are laughing at the pause when the lesson today is how to die, you sense no one really needs to hear it again.

As a die hard Rats fan, when Gerry Cott came on stage and they did Mary of The Fourth Form followed by Joey and then Rat Trap, it made my evening.  This was ten to fifteen minutes of pure magic, which was worth the price of the admission on its own.

When all is said and done it was a good show.  However I think Geldof should stop playing nice comfy theatres as this was almost like going to a recital, and get people standing up to watch him play in a more intimate venue like The 100 Club.  Oh and probably get Garry and Simon to tag along next time and play a few more Rats songs smile

More to follow in the morning.  Time for bed.

Initially, Mary of The Fourth Form, Joey's on the Street Again and Rat Trap

Gerry seemed to be really enjoying himself, though his guitar wasn't turned up to 11.  Johnny Turnbull's guitar was more audible.  However just having three Rats on the stage suddenly energised the hall.

Gerry also returned  for the final encore playing along on Here's To You and Great Song of Indifference.

Here's a little review

http://theboomtownrats.blogspot.com/2011/09/geldof-at-cadogan-hall.html

Pictures to follow.  Though they will be low quality as I only brought my cheap two upgrades ago concert don't care if I lose it mobile.  My mobile couldn't even get reception in Sloane Square where the pubs are so posh they give you your change on a silver dish.  Not that you get much change from a £20 note in that part of town!

Just got back yesterday from spending three days in Amsterdam and I though the drugs had not worn off yet! ArrGee going to see Geldof, nevermind Suss going twice, and then Gerry Cott appearing on stage with Bob and Pete. Good for Derek too, to see three Rats on stage.

Hope anybody who went enjoyed it and seeing that the only Rats who haven't appeared together are Bob and Simon the odds are looking better for some sort of 'reunion' even just for a handful of gigs.

Hope some good quality footage emerges on the Internet. It would be great to see Gerry Cott (minus dangling cigarette of course) in action with Geldof and Briquette. Cott's appearance shows that Geldof really appreciated Gerry's contribution and possibly may have regretted sacking him back in '81. All's well that ends well.

Maybe if Geldof had announced in advance that Gerry Cott would be appearing that would have generated a lot of goodwill, and some more interest, for a lot of Rats fans who then would be more likely to attend Bob's concert.

Apologies if this is already mentioned on the thread somewhere but in answer to query about YouTube footage there was actually some 'official' camerawork going on throughout gig, so might even result in an official DVD possibly, or at least some links to quality footage.

I'll be the one in front row standing to right of the guy (ArrGee) who doesn't look like he's enjoying himself but is really smile.

Actually, need to publicly thank him rather than abuse him for sorting out the best seats in the house. Centre front row...will be a few days yet before I wash Bob's dripping sweat off, and only then if work colleagues start to complain.

I did mostly enjoy it.

So funny that I got those.  Derek was moaning I wasn't even a real fan and I had the best seats smile

It was close to a sell out anyway.   The stalls were full bar the odd empty seat here and there, probably due to no shows, and the gallery looked quite busy.    Geldof may have given a good number of tickets to friends and family, but there weren't that many spare seats from what I could see.

Havent been to any on this tour other than Haye on Wye.Was especially disapointed to miss this one due to Gerry playing and i was actually going at one stage but due to working afternoons this week and not having much holiday left i couldnt make it.Perhaps i'll do the ones later in the year.
Great that Eddy was able to come over from Italy.Last time i saw him was in Milan and he was on tenter hooks with Bob at the time. Also great to see that the doubters enjoyed the gig.[you know who you are lol]
Unfortunately things will never be the same as THE Rats until it is THE rats so lets make the most of what we have got now, both ways.
Lets be honest,we have now seen Garry play on the album and with Bob in Ireland and Gerry play with Bob last night. Also Gerry and Bob have both been to see the new Rats live, cant be that bad,can it.
Scottie,I know that you arent particularly a Rats fan but you do seem to enjoy the Rats stuff so it would be great to see you at one of their gigs.Ask Jules

Great to meet Arr Gee, Suss, (who saved me a walk through the streets of Croydon), Joan of Arc, Derek the Dane, Tango, (remember her) and probably a few others too. Loved it. I was in the front row too, so was filmed. Will try again to upload some pics. Lots of celebs there, including Bill Wyman and Elle Mcpherson, Rupert Hines. What a nice guy Eddy is too and met his lovely wife. Just a nice gathering of the clan, so to speak. Wes, not sure about going to a Rats gig when Bob's voice would not be heard. They are not likely to come to Scotland are they?

Are you talking to me? smile   Out of interest, have any other Rats appeared with Geldof at a solo concert (excluding the Dave McHale tribute and Pete Briquette) ?

Don't know how you could be so rude to ArrGee when you haven't even met him.

Now obviously if you had it would be totally understandable.

Just couldn't resist - but it was a cheap shot I know!  Sorry smile

Anyway thought ArrGee stood for really gorgeous - so obviously my joke was not true!

Suss, just don't stand in front of me at Yeovil - I really don't want to see the back of your head, nice though it is   Nobody taller than 5" 1 is allowed to stand and block my view, ok.

You'll be fine, I'll be down on the floor, down on all fours....not doing the Rat though, just can't handle beers so well in my old age.

OK, will let you stand in front, Jules!  Unless I shrink any more ..... My Mum always told me I was 5"2, so either she was trying to make me feel better, was rubbish at measuring or I've shrunk - shame it's only height-wise!  biggrin

Are you going to Yeovil?

OK will try not to tread on you ...and obviously will bring my camera!  And maybe some money for the train fare in case you're not sober enough the next morning to drive!  disbelief  Sounds like it's going to be a very entertaining evening. biggrin

I also thought I was 5'1 and then measured myself later on and found an inch disappearaed.  I was gutted!!!  Might be something to do with my back problem as I've got excessive curviture of the spine??

No I'm not going to Yeovil, but seeing Bob in St Albans - am front row there.  Will be able to stand up and no-one would even notice if everyone stays seatedwink
