One person who admits to having the famous missing Rats tape is Irish rock music writer Jackie Hayden. This is the tape containing Little Queenie and a lot of other songs which may have been rewritten or gone under new names.
Hayden also says he attempted to write songs with Geldof before the Rats became famous. Wonder is there any chance of ever getting to hear those songs, and are they on a reel to reel tape or just a C60 or C90 cassette?
Might be worth emailing Mr Hayden to check if these songs are any good, were they were recorded again and in what condition the tape is in. Not forgetting to tell Mr Hayden he's such a great writer!

However much I like the Rats I'd always feel a bit embarrassed about contacting a journalist, or Factna O' kelly the Rats ex manager about missing songs!
On the other hand most people are approchable and flattered that you are interested in aspects of their musical life and certainly would, most likely provide information about the songs and the condition of the cassette. Not as if anyone is gonna make money from bootlegging the 'missing' songs!
Not sure exactly when this was published, and cannot remember either when was the last time I bought Hot Press. Probably a few years back when it was a bit undergound. Nowadays its all gone digital, with instant links to everything so most of the romance is gone.

Funnily enough I can. It was February 2009 when Franz Ferdinand adorned the cover. It was my last trip home from Dublin with my last job, and on page 17 there was an snippet about the reformed Rats. Was always worth picking up to read on the flight home. I prefer it to Q and Rolling Stone.
