....The Nightlife Thugs played Dublin's Bolton Street College of Technology. This gig was arranged by Gerry Cott and after some prompting from Bob Geldof, he negotiated a fee of £60 (£10 each!). After playing for over an hour the band took a break. On their return, Bob Geldof scrubbed The Nightlife Thugs from the blackboard where their name was displayed and replaced it with The Boomtown Rats.
So successful was the gig, that Geldof got his first rock and roll shag that same night!
Check out my super Rats blog for this and other stuff!!!
Well actually on 25th Aug, cos in those days records mostly came out on a Thursday rather than Monday as they do now.
A little info on number ones
Because records came out on Thursday, with only one day of sales (returns were phoned in on Friday), the Beatles (despite their immense popularity) only once entered at number one.
Polydor had a different policy and had their singles in the shops on a Monday which led to Slade & The Jam entering at number one. Going Underground was only the tenth record to enter number one. During the 1980s, record companies changed their policy of release days, and this led to the likes of Frankie Goes To Hollywood entering at number one. By the mid-90s, most number ones entered at number one (as all singles are released on Monday, and the chart returns are electronic) and this continued untl 2006.
In 2006 downloads alone were allowed to determine chart position, and this led to some singles entering at a lower position prior to reaching number one. Crazy by Gnarls Barkley became the first single to reach number on downloads alone in April 2006. In 2007, all sales contributed to the chart. One consequence of this was Lynyrd Skynyrd entering the charts with Sweet Home Alabama.
Congratulations !!! In December I will celebrate my 27. year having seen Bob the first time... with Banana Republic on German TV. And the passion still continues....

Can't compete with you girls. "Only" 20 years for me, in March (This is the world calling on German tv)...
Three of the group which became the Boomtown Rats were studying at Bolton Street. Pat Cusack, (aka Pete Briquette) Gerry Cott and Johnnie Moylett (aka Johnnie Fingers). Gerry approached me and said he was in a band which had gone down a storm at student gigs called the Nightlife Thugs. I never heard of them but he was anxious to do the gig so I offered him our standard fee of 30 pounds which he accepted. The Common Room only held 300 and 20p was the most we could charge. BoomtownRattrap
On the day of the concert the Common Room had filled up with apprentices. I should mention these were all big guys who wore Boiler suits and generally walked around with vice grips and wrenches! Just 15 minutes beforehand this tall dishevelled guy wearing boots and an ex-army greatcoat came up and asked to talk to me. He said he was Bob Geldof the leader of the band, he hadnt known the fee was so little and there was no way they were going to play for that sh#t money! My mind immediately turned to the common room full of oil stained monsters and the consequences of the gig not going ahead so after some haggling I agreed to double it to 60 pounds. We shook on this and he then mentioned that I was to introduce the band as the The Boomtown Rats as they had now changed their name. The name came from Woody Guthries autobiography Bound for Glory and belonged to a gang formed by the kids of newcomers in the oil boom in Oklahoma City who were excluded from existing gangs.
So that was how in October 1975 I became the first victim of the now famous Geldof give us your effing money technique and nervously I went in front of a common room of oily monsters and for the first time ever introduced the Pop Group The Boomtown Rats. Can I tell you it was a wonderful gig? Well no actually, the acoustics were horrible in the bare brick walled Common Room but even still the Rats, whilst making lots of noise, were bloody awful. Some of the audience did start dancing and saved the day but I was mightily relieved that the first historic gig by the Boomtown Rats didnt end in a riot.
Bob describes the occasion in his 1986 autobiography Is that it? Bob-Geldof-Is-That-It
Well, if youre so bloody clever, you go and talk to them.
I did, but my bluff was called. When I said that 30 pound was an insult and we wouldnt do it for less than double that, the college promoter said: All right, 60 pound then. We were committed.
So this insight into our respective negotiating skills probably explains why Bob Geldof is a millionaire and Im not! I become part of pop history and Bob cant even name check me in his book! After all these years am I not entitled to ask the question Is that it?

What a wonderful forum. It's a pleasure to log on and see what's being discussed and what's going on, which over the last two to three years has been considerable and beyond many people's wildest dreams.
Now we have a new set of asterisks to look forward to, confirmed dates for next year and possible TV appearances.

Hear hear This is a great wee forum. Glad I now know how to use a PC ha ha
Early days yet. Hope they do a tour, but they will at least do more festivals, I'm sure. I still hate festivals. Only for BG and the Rats. If only they knew what I have to endure for them .

Who else here doesn't plan their summer/Autumn because they're waiting to see what the Rats will do? For the last three years, this has been me. Anything else gets sorted later.
Facebook is more like passing traffic than crowds. Suited to those with the attention span of a something like a goldfish. For the Rats gig, I suspect less than 10% of the likes were from people who would actually attend, and it is likely most of that 10% were double likes from the likes of me.
The Rats page has an identity problem (like me!). One minute it's like The Rats themselves post, re the 40th birthday slight, but a few weeks ago it was talking about the guys in the band. Why wish a facebook page with no input from the act a happy birthday/anniversary?
It's like the quoting of lyrics followed by a hundred or so likes with some utterly meaningless comments (self included) seems to be its only purpose. Oh and those cr@p videos.
Why can't The Rats have a decent facebook page and website like The Stranglers?
We have a core of regulars on the FB page. It will get a lot of likes from people who like BG but not interest enough to follow or be bothered to discuss. I get to see stats on each post. Interestingly (or not) photographs of gigs gets more views and likes that actual info about gigs. Music posts get thousands of views too. I suspect the vast majority are too far from gigs and would not be able to travel half way across the world so the enjoy looking at the photos and watching the videos.
The Rats page is often left several days without posting. I find it loses momentum if you leave it too long and people don't bother looking. Sometimes I saturate people with too much stiff, but they do come back because they know there are things of interest to them.
This forum is far better set up for discussion, just by the format and layout.
The BG page has an identity problem. Despite my many attempts to shout out loud THIS IS NOT BOB, they still think it's him. Like he'd have time to write all that I do and like he'd actually write the things I do. It's laughable. Some people get very annoyed about it. . . I don't know what they expect from him.
This forum is like a virtual local pub, the BG FB page is like a huge arena, with some people milling around and gathering, others coming and going, popping in and out. Lots going on, busy, busy...

What on earth are you putting on there!
Seriously, I cannot abide Facebook. With a few exceptions, it is for show-offs and attention seekers.
All sorts of 'stiff' about the Rats and BG, Mr Pedant. . I did correct myself afterwards .
I agree with you about showing off on FB. What's all this cr@p about posting pictures of your dinner? Lots of selfies? Why?????? I don't understand it. Maybe I'm just old.

I'm amazed people are so open on it. Must be a gold mine for villians, wouldn't take too long to get a few complete identities or better still just find out what people have in their houses worth nicking and when they are away. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts of anonymity, somehow there are some tagged pictures of me up on it...

There was a case up here where a home alone teenager organised a 'Facebook party' probably naively, but £20,000 damage /theft ensued when unintended 'guests' read about it on FB and descended on mum and dads house and ran amok.
But adults can be just as daft. 'Here I am in the Lake District with my beautiful ****** celebrating xyz, isn't the hotel we're in til Tuesday lovely? '

just above a post from the other night checking in 'at home in bed'. if you click on the check in post it takes you directly to their home address!!
Maybe the thing to do is post a picture of a Rottweiler and say you're off to a gig - but the dog is having a quiet night in! And then maybe another post that oops you forgot to feed the dog before going out. Grrrrrrrrr ....
Perhaps my wimpy cat turns into a Rotty when he's not been fed .
We used to have a Boxer dog. Daft as a brush and never bit or hurt anyone. He looked the part though and people would cross the street (or was that me?!) and I used to think all he would do is lick them to death and make friends with them! We were also never burgled in the 12 years we owned him, but were turned over within 7 months of his death.
