Contacted RTE last week about this much sought special, but alas, alas and alack, the reply came -

Unfortunately there is third party footage within this programme, that is not our copyright, so we therefore cannot make copies of this programme.

Im sorry I couldnt help further.

- Dang!!

That's a pity. I expected some of that documentary to be included on the Someone's Looking at You DVD, but as usual the real fans loose out, and the footage just lies there, over some copyright issue. Not that it's going to make any difference, this far removed in time.

I sent back a nice email saying this piece of Irish rock history should be seen, got the reply:

"I will certainly pass on your information and hopefully the powers that be will be able to repeat this programme"

- I won't hold my breath, but you never know, all you need is one person at RTE to bring up the possibility and one never knows, they may decide it's time for a re-airing.

The only possibility is going to RTE as a 'researcher' ahem, and asking to see it, saying you are writing a book about Irish rock history.

I don't know if anyone can just ask to see an RTE documentary which lies in their vaults, I would think you would need to be some some sort of researcher or academic, rather than just a curious member of the public.

However much I like the band I cannot see myself blagging my way into the RTE film library, on the pretext of seeing this rare documentary! Maybe if one was making a documentary about the Boomtown Rats then one would have an excuse- but it would make an interesting story, what happened to the various members after the band broke up. Certainly more interesting than the Voice of Ireland tosh which they seem to be heavily promoting at the moment. Anyway BG the voice  of Ireland.

All I ever watch on RTE is the news, which is usually depressing stuff about economics, and for that we have to pay a huge licence fee for the priveledge. It's crazy.

Some interesting footage, and as usual it's Bob's talking head telling the story- probably with some mythologising, but hey. Would be nice to have seen more actual film, and it's hard to know if this is from the RTE documentary or something else.

Also brief outtake from Australia 1980, Bob Geldof on Aussie music show Countdown.

very brief clip -move dial to 2:06 (dedicated fans only)

They showed clips of that documentary I think in the BBC4 series "How the Brits Rocked America" last week - 2 or 3 minutes of Rats' footage from the US tour 1979 - was very interesting seeing it
