Well they have lived in England since 1977, five of the six, and earned their living there and been in productive employment. Doubt if any of the Rats have time for petty nationalism.

Geldof's father was an immigrant from Belgium, who first went to London and then to Dublin, and there he married an Irish woman making Bob half Belgian I suppose.
Of course Jessie j and Edele are not British! This sort of musical misappropriation should be forbidden by the European Parliament in the same way that Edam cheese must be Dutch and Newcastle Brown Ale can only be produced in Geordieland.

I wonder just how many different compilation albums have featured I Don't Like Mondays over the years? Hard to say offhand, but it does crop up fairly frequently?
The Rats are probably on because of Geldof's Brit award a few years previously. I had not seen this Observer interview before but it gives an indication of how relationships in the band have changed for the better in the last few years. Geldof: 'The world is falling apart and you want to talk about Gerry Cott?'
Just thinking it would have been interesting if the award in 2005 had went to Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats.
Of course Geldof got the award primarily for Band Aid/Live Aid, as much as his efforts with the Rats and solo work-but the Rats 'outstanding contribution' to music was being an utterly brilliant band so some sort of duel award, while very unlikely to happen, would have been very interesting.
Funnily Sting reformed the Police and toured the world soon after Geldof's comments!
Come to think of it when I think of Geldoff I only think of Band Aid and his charity work. I think was largely because of his Band Aid work which was implied I couldn't even remember the name of the band he was in. But Band Aid was amazing a real achievement on a global scale.
Couldn't think of the name of Geldof's band? That's like not knowing Mick Jagger is in the Rolling Stones or Bono is in U2.
I think most of us writing here do so in celebration of the music of the Boomtown Rats, who, let it be said had loads of hit singles and album success before Band Aid.
Unless Geldof had had prior fame and notoriety during the punk era, he would not have been in a position to do Band Aid, and as that name suggests it was meant as a quick sticking plaster type fix for an immediate crisis in Ethiopia rather than a fully worked out philosophy.
Newbies can always check out the Boomtown Rats Greatest Hits and hopefully Bob Geldof and the Rats can be seen for the brilliant band they were. Nothing like todays plastic music scene.
Could be wrong but I suspect our attention was intended for the CD Packaging link on that mail rather than any point being made in the text...or not, as the case may be.

Had Band Aid not happened it would be interesting to know how the Rats and Geldof would have been thought of in retrospect. Band Aid/Live Aid is always to the fore when people think of Geldof, except for the select few on this fourm .

I'm sure it is, but an interesting point of view. Geldof is unique in that he transcended the Rats not by making better records but by supplanting them with a separate project which bore little or no relevance to what went before. I suppose another example, but on a smaller scale, would be Jools Holland who is better known than Squeeze or any of their members including Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, yet not really for what he did originally. Geldof is arguably one of the most famous people in the world whereas The Rats don't really register with too many people.

Yes I suspected that, but ignorance of the Rats career or talent is like a red rag to a bull , for me. And I am emotionally driven.
I think the guy, if he was looking for mass sales of his product, isn't going to find them here, I often wonder how such attempted marketing works, but I did notice his post made some sense instead of the usual gibberish when attempting to sell product X.
He should listen to The Saints song know Your Product....

Lots of people have Rats albums over the years, but don't post on this forum, so there may be a lot of appreciation that remains 'unspoken'.
To his credit Geldof has never disowned the Rats music. Naturally a big event like Band Aid/Live Aid is going to be Geldof's legacy the music business and most of us know how the media work and how journalists think.
For me, it was just so overwhelming when I got to see the Rats for the very first time a few years back, and it reignited my passion for their music, which is why my loyalties switched from my teenage Bob idolising to the "new" Rats - just so happy to rediscover the music, and realise how much the music meant to me. Still looking forward to seeing Bob in June but feel sad it's separate and I guess no matter that he has achieved so much, still easy to "blame" him for the original Boomtown Rats fizzling out. Having said that, I must admit it's the first 3 albums I really love, and so maybe it just wasn't meant to be. But glad to have the chance to hear the original music live still and played so well - when they play somewhere a bit nearer than Wales or Scotland
