Look forward to seeing you in Islington, Jules. 12 year old took it quite well that he's not coming - 17 year old wasn't overly enthused when I said I'd bought him a ticket, but swayed by the promise of an Indian meal beforehand

Haven't decided either way yet.  Drink, mmmm.  I'm so easily tempted...

Funnily enough many years ago I was sat next to Eric Clapton in the Indian restaurant next to the Asembly Halls.  What was funny was my wife subtley trying to tell me what I was fully aware of.

Some very good restaurants in Upper Street.  Le Mercury is my personal favourite, but Gallipoli is well worth a visit as well.

And to think I was only 15 when I first saw the Rats in nearby Finsbury Park. Funny thing is I didn't even pay for a ticket for it as we knew someone on thr door and got in gratis.  Your 17 year old will enjoy the last half hour.  And if he looks 18 he can fetch the drinks

Hmm, you'll be lucky - he gives me a lecture if I exceed 2 units (I get told off quite a lot!).  That was really why I was thinking of smuggling some in to avoid him moaning at me biggrin  So what do you like - Tesco bitter or lager?? My husband used to work in Islington so has a (veggie) restaurant lined up - apparently the best in London!  And it's quite cheap too

One unit is one bottle of wine, right, and two units is two bottles?

Woops, knew I was going wrong somewhere.smile.gif

I think I'll adopt your way of measuring units, Noel!

Err, neither thanks.  I'd give up drinking before I touched either.

Only worry when you have lost count of the units/bottles/pints/glasses.  Normally happens around 10pm in my experience smile

So what do you drink? Meths? I think I like most drinks actually - though not a fan of bitter.  And once got given a bottle of campari - tried mixing all sorts with that to make it palatable but only thing that overpowered the disgusting taste was grapefruit juice so not really a winner ...

I am not a frequent drinker but if I do indulge it would be Smithwicks Ale (much prefer this to Guinness).

I have a tendency to try the local beers/ales rather than drinking 'corporate beer' (Heineken, Carlsberg, Fosters) as some though and care has been put into their making and you get more bang for your buck, as real ales tend to be stronger.

Can't wait for the scientists to manufacture a alcohol pill which will get you merry but avoid the dreaded hangover.smile.gif

Most things that don't have Tesco branding.  Only drank meths by accident in chemistry labs.

Fair point - though the whisky is quite good (well after a few glasses, you can't tell), and buying it boosts the clubcard points.  Every little helps   Did your meths accident have any lasting effects?? biggrin

I'm not sure.  I do remember hearing a Boomtown Rats song called Another Piece of Red at the time which sounded really sh!tty, which was odd as they'd never made a bad song up until then.  The effects between 1980 and 1982 seemed to be quite marked, as they made a few more duffers including Charmed Lives.  Still, I did get a Chemistry A-Level thanks to my deep understanding of substances smile

He won't have time if he does all his Boomtown Rats hits in one night.  If he does his solo hit, then you'll have plenty of chance of requests.  He normally plays GSOI twice anyway.

If he plays all the Boomtown Rats top 30 hits,  I'll be there!   Of course, he can't play Charmed Lives as that wasn't a hit smile

Maybe Bob could organise an Internet poll to see what songs fans would like to hear, and maybe a reason why as well. He would then have a good idea of what individual songs mean to fans and play a gig that the fans have chosen. Maybe not all tracks but a good few.

His set list can be a bit too predictable especially TGSOi twice, and Mondays even though these were hits. Nice if things were a bit more left field.

A poll led to the Best of The Boomtown Rats, which omitted House on Fire disbelief.   If he was to play a gig for the audience, I suspect most would want all the Rats hits from Looking After No. 1 to Banana Republic along with Joey's on the Street Again and The Great Song of Indifference thrown in.  As for the rest, I suppose perm any ten others weighted toward the last couple of solo albums.

I think the set list by and large is fine. Just enough to keep older fans content with more emphasis on the solo material he believes in. Not really what I want, but hey, Roberts & Crowe do that.
