Is that a direct clash then, i.e. Dublin impossible? I think this should be the gig everyone on forum saves up for smile , and all turn up wearing one of your bespoke t-shirts.

no, pulp is end march, so no clash. my wife wanted to get/do something 4 birthday today and pulp announced rah gig a week or so ago. didn't mention geldof in Dublin to her, but the rats is a different matter. will break my m25 rule 4 this but Friday nite at Xmas will be tricky for outbound flight.

Christmas proximity did occur to me too, but I can't see 3 weeks prior being too heavy, especially if booked well in advance.

I'm tempted to do just that, and secure hotel, on basis that even if gig gets canned it can be a Christmas shopping weekend somewhere different.

Venue is very central by looks of it, although reported as small. Could be a memorable gig I reckon.

Thinking about it, I think I'd ditch shopping in favour of a Rats 'trail', and seek out things like Morans (or site of), Blackrock College, coffee shop where Rat Trap got written etc etc....

Cool. Whelan's is a good venue, not too big but generally gets good gigs. Missed The Only Ones there fairly recently which was the full, original line up with the legendary Peter Perrett.

Seeing as its near Christmas there should be a good turnout. Last time I went to Whelans was about five years ago, for Ian Mccullough from Echo and The Bunnymen doing a solo gig. Mac was downing double whisky after double whisky, while doing his Scott Walker type thing, of course wearing shades indoors.

Haven't even bought a ticket for Bob Geldof at Vicar St yet. Will wait another while to make sure the gig is going ahead first.

Dun Laoghaire where the Rats are from is very nice and quite different from Dublin city- it is a well to do Victorian town and worth a visit especially in the summer. Blackrock and Sandycove are just up the coast and there is a frequent train service.

In my opinion Dun laoghaire is more 'neat and sedate' than 'drab and dreary' but I like the area as its fairly civilised in relation to other parts of Dublin.

Straight from club to bus then...will save hotel expenses.

Only been clubbing in Dublin once, in that vicinity funnily enough. Might even have been same place now rebadged. Great night though - actually played songs I knew rather than 5 hours of drum/bass blurring into one.

Blackheath looks a bit too nice...might be another Cadogan Hall! Hope it's not seated (fairly sure ticket was general admission).

A guy I know who lives over there (one of that support band in Whyteleafe) was saying Garry was on some radio station recently promoting the gig in an interview. Hopefully there will be more interest than in most places seeing as it's local lads and a Friday night (good one for after work).

I think playing something like the 100 club on a Friday night would be better than playing in the leafy surburbs on a Saturday night. But then I guess the band all have proper jobs these days smile

Hope to be there on 7 December and see you both, Suss and ArrGee. I was thinking about going over to the Blackheath gig, but haven't made my mind up yet. Last trip to London was just for a half day for the Geldof gig, so might stay a few nights before gig? Or maybe the Cambridge gig, cheap flight to Stanstead and bus to Cambridge?

Noel, would be great if you were to come over for Blackheath. Apart from ArrGee others like Wes, Joan, Jules, Do The Rat are all considering it too. I dropped a line to BTR too. Think Lisa is doubtful but hopefully will be able to swing it.

Forum meet would be great if others are reading and tempted.

I'd like to see one of the gigs in England and the Blackheath one seems good. I'll take a look at my finances and check hotels and flights and see if I can get a reasonable deal. At least there is no Olympics or Jubilee celebrations on in November so things will be a bit less hectic.

Happy to drive via Stansted if you do, to save bus ride. Bear in mind it's a Class of 77 gig though, so Rats likely to get early slot for limited time before Jam/Blockheads.

I like Cambridge as a city, been there a few times over the years. It's unlikely I'll go with the three bands playing. My mind was more thinking of the bargain flight to Stanstead on a Monday in November. Thanks for the offer of a lift anyway Suss.

Could be, although I need to be out of town about 3pm to get home. DART to Blackrock/Dun Laoghaire is only 20 mins or so as I recall (Noel can confirm) so may be good for after breakfast, then back into town for a sarnie and coffee at Bewley's 'where Bob wrote Rat Trap'. Got no idea where Moran's was. We can ask the band smile

Might even get a Rat guided tour if we're lucky biggrin . That would be cool....

There is nothing to say the rats once played there but its still worth a look.

Not this time - ferry to/from Dublin port. Got a feeling DL is seasonal and not an option for this trip. I did venture down there earier in year so I'm happy to stay in town.

No, the gasworks referred to is Dublin Gasworks in or around Barrow Street, Ringsend D4. Nowadays it's all posh flats and a nice theatre (Grand Canal Theatre) being gentrified during the Celtic tiger period. During Geldof's days in the early seventies I'd imagine the place was a bit of a dump, run down and pretty rough looking at old photos of the area. Allegedly there was a meat factory near the Gasworks so it's based on fact.

The Five Lamp Boys would have been a bit 'outside their manor', seeing as the Five Lamps is on the other side of Dublin, so that might be a bit of poetic licence, but a gang of inner city thugs called the Five Lamps boys were extant around that time. No doubt there was an Italian cafe in the area as well, as the Italians cornered the fish and chips/cafe market in Dublin a long time ago.

Dun Laoghaire is best seen in Spring or Summer. There is some lovely coastline and great train views that snake their way around the coast, and nice towns like Dalkey (pronounced 'daw kee' and Killiney.

There is not much of a Rat Trail in Dublin as most of the original venues are gone. Nothing of note in Dunlaoghaire or Blackrock. Bewleys has/had a Plaque outside. Pubs I would recommend are The Foggy Dew and Sweeneys across the road. Both in city centre - Dame Street. Older Punk/SKA crew in them and musicians hang outs. 10/15 minute walk to village. Any questions? Post them and I'll try answer.

Nothing of note in DL or Blackrock only Geldofs old family home (Crostwaithe Park) and Blackrock College! Moran's Hotel is now called O'Sheas, and it still stands in its albeit shabby grandeur. The East Pier is still in DL (Eastward Ho!, Eastward Ho!) so one can go on a 'walking back to happines' walk if so inclined.

Geldof's and the Rats Dublin was of the late sixtes and early/mid seventies so naturally a lot of it is gone. There's the complete landscape of The House At The Top Of The World, which is a true Geldof recollection of his youth in Dun Laoghaire and quite haunting.

I'm not really into rock trails and that sort of thing. Good that there is a 'central recognition' point at Bewleys Cafe on Grafton St, but in lots of ways the Rats are anti heroes, so it would be two faced of a city that didn't care too much for their music to start putting up plaques. Funny thing is the best band to come out of Dublin do not really have a big fan base, but life was never fair.

Re Attention on Facebook: I wouldn't put too much store on that. Maybe Rats fans are old fashioned and will just turn up, without having to announce it to the world.

Superb show! After the vast Blackheath Halls, this was a proper Dublin bar room gig even down to the open fire at the back. A full set and when they ran out of songs they did Mary of the fourth form again. Really well received by the audience, and there were even people under forty lapping it up. As close as you' 'll ever get to seeing the band pre 1977, unless you have a Tardis.
