So another concert cancelled, sorry postponed. I would not be surprised if there are more, after my experience today. I was walking past Edinburgh's largest ticket agency this afternoon and perused their lists of forthcoming gigs for the whole of Scotland in their window. Did I see Bob mentioned? NO. They had no knowledge of the gig in Perth at all. All I have seen are a few posters up in Perth itself. (a fairly small city mainly full of retired people) Whoever is handling your promotion and publicity Bob, dump them now. I could do better myself. This is the only Scottish gig and if I were Bob's management, I would put adverts in papers such as the Scotsman, Perthshire Advertiser, Glasgow Herald and Edinburgh Evening News A.S.A.P. I would also put out trailers on radios Forth, Clyde and Tay. I would imagine a vast majority of the audience would be travelling from the big cities. How can they go if they know nothing about it?
Anyone need a publicist north of the border?
PS one of my friends is a much listened to DJ on radio Forth. Would I be standing on anyones toes if I asked him to plug the show? Thereagain, it may be cancelled, sorry postponed, yet.
thanks rekathat makes me feel a better.but as the only other person i know thats going is still only on the 4th row i have my concerns about numbers.but thanks dude...ette
The fan's count Bob, be there -' 2 Billion' as you kept spouting off watched Live8 - or just 2 hundred! -or maybe they don't count to you - not anymore. Actions speak volumes. There, said it now.
Totally agree. The people who bought tickets should get an explanation.
However, I don't think the publicity was the big problem. The problems were
The potential audience is fairly small.
The venues (particularly Shepherds Bush) were very large.
The expense of tickets (£25 is more than Franz Ferdinand charge).
Speaking for myself, I wasn't very likely to go as I don't care too much for the solo stuff. That said once I saw the set list in Cardiff, I did consider getting a ticket.
I think that playing smaller venues in big cities would have being better, if not as lucrative. It is likely they would have sold out and created a bit of a buzz. As an example, Geldof @ The 100 club would have generated interest. OK, maybe not quite in the Madonna/Koko Club league, but with the attendant publicity/reviews, people would have wanted to go (well I would). And it would certainly have been a better atmosphere.
Sadly, the days of Geldof selling out big concerts are gone. His music, in comparison to his other activities, is not considered to be of interest to the wider public. And there aren't enough devotees, like ourselves, to fill out the larger venues. Such a shame considering how strong his back catalogue is.

Oddly enough, that hasn't been the problem in London. The gig has been listed for a while in Time Out, and there have been a couple of ads in there. All the relevant web sites show the gig.
I suspect the straw that broke the camel's back was that an interview in last week's Standard was accompanied by no discernable increase in ticket sales.
I'm sure there is an advertising budget, but the cost of placing the ad has to be offset against the increase in sales. More often than not the listing or a newspaper item does the trick without any expenditure.
On the question of promotion, it isn't all about the advertising - being heard on the radio is very important also. Nobody has a chance to know whether they like Geldof music or not if they don't know it exists.
I agree with you ArrGee about the choice and size of venues. Location is important, everything needs to be thought out carefully, against the costs, and all weighed up. Something has gone wrong somewhere, and we have been let down because of it. I don't feel good about it at all at the moment.
I can see there are some pretty pissed off fans out there. My point was, that if there is virtually no publicity, which seems to be the case in Scotland at the moment, how can people from places like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee know this gig is on? Many Geldof fans do not read this website. There is still time to advertise this Perth gig a bit more.
Some points however, are not open to debate.
1) Many people have lost money due to these changes. -travel costs, hotels, loss of earnings.
2) Unfortunately they are mostly Bob's most devoted fans, who have been instrumental in putting him where he is now.
3) They are the ones who spend their hard earned cash on books, CDs and DVDs.
4) Someone from Bob's management should have the enough courtesy, decency and respect for the fans to put out a message of apology/explanation and admit the errors.
How about it ADMIN- Let them know how people feel.
Scottie, have a look at the London cancelled thread too, we are all starting to repeat ourselves. Shows how strongly we feel about this.
A few newspaper/tv interviews locally would be an ideal way of promoting. I know Bob has other fish to fry these days, but if he wants to do a tour it should be a half hearted effort should it?
Sorry, Arr Gee , point taken. I know you can't do anything. Just had to get a few things off my chest. Perth is pretty snowed in at the moment. Hope it cleares by the 5th. Congrats to Bob on his latest recognition. Well deserved and one in the eye to all his critics. Gorbachev, no less!

No problem, it's just that people think I'm part of bobgeldof.info, which I'm not. And that I know what is happening, which I don't. As for letting them know how people feel, well this is the best way to do it. Messages on this board come up on google searches for Geldof all the time. Try it! Trust me, they will know how people feel from posts like yours.
There hasn't been much publicity for Bob's Hull date either.
Still, there is good news for people going to the Hull gig.
It does appear to be going ahead as Bob was interviewed live on the local news programme 'Look North' on Tuesday night, and though he admits to been full of flu, he said he was looking forward to returning to Hull and playing this Thursday, so fingers crossed that he will!
Good that Hull is going ahead. The Perth Box office said today that there were still plenty of tickets left, but did not think it would be cancelled. I have managed to wangle some free plugs for the Perth gig on Radio Forth. If I am stepping on anyone's toes, then TOUGH, I DON'T BL***Y CARE!
I am still hoping to go to Perth and will know on Friday for definite. And I still want Bob to wear a kilt. The snow has gone and there is no more forecast before Monday.
