Nice to catch up with a few people, sorry I didn't say bye properly to ArrGee, Derek and Kenny. Next time I will get to chat to Lisa more. We seem to have the briefest of exchanges. I hope you could see, Lisa. You were behind some tall people. Us little people MUST be at the front .

I have various photos. Some of which are completely cr@p others are bearable. They are slowly coming over wifi to my ipad now, so will post later. What about posting on FB? I've said to people not on the BG page, only personal pages.

The band were on top form and gelled well. One or two errors - Mondays intro was a little on and a false start on When The Night Comes. Bob was indeed having fun.

No stalker photos, we were a little slow on the uptake. Bob was outside signing some things and rushed off just as we walked through the door.

Altogether a superb evening. IOW here we come

Brilliant night - gig was excellent, really good to see them together at last. Managed to see most of the second half close up when I eventually got to the front! Couldn't concentrate on the first 2 songs unfortunately as hubby's wedding ring flew off his finger when he stuck hands in air to clap! But managed to spot and retrieve it so then able to focus again on the gig biggrin

They were enjoying themselves on stage. Doesn't show on those pictures, but they weren't acting like they were super super cool, they were having a ball.

It is possible to enjoy yourself at a gig while taking pictures and / or filming. People have been doing it for years in some form or another. How many people have still got old C90 casettes of old gigs that someone else has carefully recorded and copied (and copied)? Back in the day, going to Camden Market or record fairs to buy bootlegs was the only way to get a recording of the gig. Now with the digital cameras and smart phones and the immediate access to You Tube, Facebook and Twitter, it's possible to share moment immediately with others, while still enjoying the gig.

For the record, the three videos that have been posted on here were recorded by me and I had great time. I've uploaded then to You Tube so that others who weren't "in the know" about the gig, as well as those who were there can enjoy them for themselves.

I also took some pictures, they are not as good as the high quality ones posted on here, but hey they are still a good memory of a fantastic nigt that I enjoyed.

Can't really complain when Bob is urging people to get their cameras etc out ahead of Having My Picture Taken.

Also said to me that he for one wasn't too bothered about the 'secrecy' of the gig, after the event at least.

Completely agree with you. It was one of my best ever gigs - thoroughly enjoyed it. To get a killer shot is an added benefit to me as a keen amateur photographer.

Many thanks for posting the videos.

Personally I do follow my own self imposed rules (ArrGee the guy you describe was behind me so please forgive him not me. ;o) )

I NEVER use flash - it focusses better and gets better results and flashes often piss off the crowd and the band

With SLRs I always use the viewfinder - again I find it focusses better but also I'm not waving around an LCD screen distracting people

I never wave my camera in the air hoping for a good shot

I only take pics for a bit during each song so I'm not pissing off anyone behind me - with burst setting you still end up with hundreds of photos.

You also need to know the artist I think - there are always good points in a Geldof set when you know he will be still and you should get a great shot. No point trying to photograph any artist who's boucing around the stage.

Don't bother with an iphone (especially with flash!) - David Bailey couldn't get a decent iphone concert pic. If you want a quick memory of a show record a segment and that will be better quality)

With the autofocussing of a decent SLR I find that a flat picture is always best (when all you are shooting is the same distance away eg artist side on) - on close zoom. (ie the mic is not in front of the singer (otherwise you often find it's the mic in sharp fiocus and not the artist)

Sure, enjoy yourself, but it annoys those stood behind. Even though it was only about five deep to where I was standing, there were three or four cameras in my eyeline more or less contantly up with lcd screens illuminated.

In recent years I have gone to the front of gigs so it doesn't look like the Christmas illuminations. Then I'm the annoying one jumping around in front of the stage Apologies to all those at Whelan's last December, but I had a few drinks on my way. That said, a lot of people did get talking to me afterwards, and seemed to be impressed by my enthusiasm!

Thanks for the great advice regarding taking pictures with SLR. I've never been able to get brilliant pictures like the ones you've posted. Last time I took a SLR camera to a gig was Macca at Wembley in 1990 and it got confisgated. My SLR pictures always end up blurry, have never been able to master the correct settings!!

I'm guessing about 300 were there on Saturday. Kenney Jones was tweeting a couple of weeks ago that there were only 50 of the 300 tickets left. Having said that, I was told on Saturday night that 90 people on the guest list didn't turn up, which was not a lot of good for the 50 on the reserve list. It wasn't the sort of place that you could have gone to without the promise of a ticket, the security on the gate half a mile away saw to that.

I presume the band invited some of their friends too, but with about 300 attending that's a good sign. I don't think a polo club in Surrey in the sort of place you would wish to be loitering, with or without intent, on a Saturday night, without a ticket! They're probably well practiced in spotting riff raff!

It's a pity if some people, as Jules says, could not get in.

Just seen all the follow ups to my last comment, and realised how ambiguous it was. Wasn't Bob that said to me - it was his stance on cameras being used that spoke volumes. Should have used the phrase 'That also said to me....' Sorry! LOL smile .

Oh well, floodgates open now. No bad thing in my view. The main concern clearly was band not being billed for a public appearance. These are all shots/videos from a private party, so no harm done I say. Will hopefully reignite some more interest in upcoming gigs too.

As for guestlist and numbers, the full list on door numbered 481, but that included staff and a fair few (certainly of my numbers) who were on list initially but then dropped off before the night for various reasons. Their replacements were just added to list, without the originals being removed/amended.

I had 18 no shows out of 170 'promises'. If there were 90 in total as quoted elsewhere then venue had nearer 400 than 300. I'm not aware of anyone being denied a ticket, but may be wrong. Hope not.

Not a bad turnout really for somewhere unpublicised that you can't even see from a road and is also 5 miles from nearest station smile . Great night.

A couple of things to add.

i) It was good that the audience wasn't just a load of old farts like myself and there were a few younger people there.

ii) Thanks to Mark for organising it and to Suss for letting a number of forum members attend this event. We are all very grateful and owe you a drink or two. I did try to inform as many known members as I could, and apologise if anyone missed out.

I was just tasked with putting the word out to fans as far as possible. Never written so many PMs and emails and texts and FB messages in my life. Weird thing was in some cases I had no idea if they lived nearer Sydney than Surrey confuse . Good to make contact with a few more kindred spirits though - only regret is not properly meeting some on the night, e.g. Kerry and his husband biggrin .

It's true! Only thing omitted is that concerts have gotten quieter and audience members now shout so loudly at each other so you can't hear the music properly...
