Geldof said recently that he does not give a f**k how people will remember him, when he dies. He has said numerous times that he doesn't care what people think of his solo music or indeed The Boomtown Rats.
For someone spending a lot of time trying to do good in the world, despite not being liked by some, his attitude has always intrigued me. Does he really not care about a legacy? Is he really indifferent to people who may criticise his music and just ploughs on doing whatever he sees fit?

Re: Rats gig cancellations Geldof told STM radio station:'it's not like we're The Beatles or anything, I couldn't care less what people think'....'I'm not interested in being remembered at all.'
PS Post title borrowed from Super Furry Animals song, just in case it seems a bit strange. Bet ArrGee knew that.

Of course! I got the live extended version. Most fcuks ever in one song. All 24 minutes of it on 12" with the B-side simply inscribed. 11th in the best 100 britpop songs ever according to this week's NME. Best band from Wales, ever.
It's Not The End of the World? has one of the best promo videos ever, though sadly it seems to be universally blocked on You Tube, so you'll have to take my word for it.

He probably doesn't care what people think. He knows he can't please everyone, and quite often his music tends to be discussed along with the associated baggage of his life. Rarely is there a review of any album or gig that doesn't mention Band/Live Aid, Paula/Michael or his daughters. Maybe this forum is the one of the few places the music is discussed without all that.
He has been fairly active musically in the last few years with a new album and a fair number of live dates. I think he cares enough to want an audience albeit a fairly modest one.
Geldof contradicts himself constantly. If you read the Joe Jackson interviews he talks about how much all 'that' press hurt him. Most of the time he says he doesn't read it. What do you believe? That's why I think he does care and just covers up.
Indeed, he flies off the handle on occasions, tries to dictate what can and cannot be discussed, and provides the same answers in certain situations. To me that has 'care' written all over it .

He cares about some things, but as far as caring about people liking his music, I suspect he has long given up. People have pretty much formed their opinions on his music and are unlikely to change them. He knows there are a few people who like the Rats and a few who like his solo stuff, many are totally indifferent and some have a strong dislike. As he said it's not like they are The Beatles. He'd probably like to have a bit more appreciation given the music the Rats made and for what they achieved back in the day, and he'd probably like to have had a more successful solo career, but I doubt it loses him any sleep.

Well Rat Trap is much better than Yellow Submarine, and Lookin After No 1 is better than Ob La Di Ob La Da so Bob can take some heart! He probably meant in terms of popularity rather then just writing good songs. A lot of the McCartney Beatles stuff is fairly risable, Lennon was hit and miss as well.
Some of the comments from people in Australia about the Rats having to cancel were a bit unkind, but mainly pure ingorance. Some were saying it was asking a bit much of Geldof to want to tour on the strenght of one hit single in Oz. I supsect if any of these people had ever listened to some of the Rats albums, particlulary the debut and Tonic For The Troops they might have thought differently.

In lots of ways he's a control freak, but many in music or the arts are the same way. So many interviewers just ask boring questions about Live Aid or international aid and Geldof starts quoting statistics about Aftican countries and most people are not in a position to really query these stats. Interviews then become a litany of facts and figures about third world aid.
He famously asked a reporter how many irrigation channels they had funded, when disattisfied with the journalists legitimate questions. If Geldof was asking the questions as a reporter he would not give people an easy ride......

I suspect that all those who are ever going to listen to them have done so by now. To play those large venues with high ticket prices based on their track record in Australia was a severe misjudgement. Even in the UK where arguably they had the most success, I couldn't see them doing half a dozen dates in 4-5,000 seat arenas. Especially with front row tickets for £500.
