Talking in Code third verse?

On my vinyl copy of V Deep for Talking in Code, the inner sleeve includes a third verse i.e. includes the phrase "semaphore girl" (google for it). Any idea why this didn't make it onto the record?

I recall TBR performing this third verse live (golddiggers, Chippenham, filmed in 1984 for BBC's Sight and Sound) but I've not heard the release version.

I had previously hoped it was a case of DINHON i.e. the track was shortened to get it onto vinyl and that it would be present in its full glory on the CD. However, it wasn't on the original CD either. I haven't got the reissue yet: does it have the third verse?

No, the re-issue doesn't have the third verse either.  Never heard the BBC's Sight and Sound version, so can't comment.

If anything, tracks on the re-issues were shortened; no intro/outro on Do The Rat, no gap in Cheerio, Joey's on the Street Again speeded up!

Is DINHON different on vinyl?  Just a missing verse or something more substantial.  I haven't got a vinyl version

For some strange reason they allways did the 3rd verse when they played live.It is on the 75-86 dvd .It goes something like "and if a=b ,I love that taste of you dressed up in green".

Thanks for confirming. On my Columbia Mondo Bongo CD reissue (early 1990s) 'Cheerio' is missing the second half so I'm glad to learn it has been restored, albeit without the full length pause.

I've seen a couple of posts here about BTR tracks which still aren't available on CD e.g. 'Europe Looked Ugly' (of which I've always been fond). You mentioning shortened tracks made me realise the single versions were often shortened e.g. 'Someones Looking At You' (repeat chorus to fade and miss the spoken "On a night like this..."), 'Mondays' (miss reprise of first verse), 'Banana Republic' (repeat chorus to fade), 'Elephants Graveyard' (miss third verse). Then there are the alternative versions e.g. 'A Storm Breaks (instrumental)', the 12 inch singles from the VDeep and ITLG era, ...

Before I risk going too far OT, my point is there is still a lot of material out there. Box set, anyone?

I no longer have the vinyl version. IIRC, 'When I was Young' is shortened by a few refrains in the 'baby baby baby' area. Also missing were a few tracks, possibly 'Pulled Apart by Horses' and 'Good Boys in the Wrong'.

Speaking of completeness, does anyone know if the track 'Talk Me Up', from the B-side of the 'This is the World Calling' 7 inch, has made it to CD, possibly the BG box set? I really liked that one, probably because it sounded most like TBR.

'Talk Me Up' failed to make the anthology and is only on TITWC 7" & 12".  Likewise 'Let's Go' is only on the original vinyl.  But most criminally neither the Barmitzvah mix of Indifference (12" Love or Something) nor the Dustin collaboration on Rat Trap made it either.

I live in hope that the 1978 Peel sessions along with early demos like Riot in Cell Block #9 do appear on the www somewhere.  Someone must have them (not me though)  There is at least a couple of CDs worth of material out there, but it looks unlikely that they will be released.  Maybe the powers that be at geldof.info could provide them as free downloads (hint, hint).

BTW, A bit of self publicity here, but some of the anomolies on the singles are noted here though you describe them far more elequently!  Will update the page with more detail when I get the chance.

All the known Geldof tracks

This thread has a post of mine which relates to a lot of this

it poses many questions to Bob & Pete, such as....

  1. It was great to hear the demo tracks which were extras on the first album.  Were there any other tracks from the 1975 demos?   Where and when were they recorded?  Were any other demos made and do any of them exist?
  2. Though I have read the notes about the re-ordering of tracks, I must admit I don't really agree with the philosophy on the whole.  It also seems that it was a late decision as far as the debut album is concerned, as promo versions were in the original order, and no disclaimer was included on the sleeve notes.  I think V Deep is better for the re-ordering, Mondo Bongo is worse, and I'm neutral on In The Long Grass.  As for the debut album, I just listen to the promo, as it's too shocking to contemplate listening to the second best album of the seventies in any other order! Given that people are pretty familiar with the albums and the running order, don't you think this was a radical decision?

  3. A number of B-sides are missing.  That means Born To Burn, Man At The Top, Europe Looked Ugly, A Storm Breaks (instrumental), Nothing Happened Today (live in Singapore) [both from the bonus disc for Charmed Lives], and Banana Republic/Close As You'll Ever Be (live in Cardiff) have yet to appear on CD.  All The Rage has only ever appeared on a German release.  Was there any reason for omitting them?

  4. The biggest sin on the CDs is the wobble at the start of I Can Make It If You Can.  Is there any reason for this?

  5. The singles had slightly different mixes, most frequently abriged. Like Clockwork, I Don't Like Mondays, Someone's Looking at You, Banana Republic, Elephant's Graveyard and House on Fire were all shorter (and in some cases better!). Also Rat Trap had a variation on the Pus & Grime lyric on the single. Given that single versions for Mary of the Fourth Form and Dave (I appreciate these differed markedly, so it is more justified) were on the CDs, why not have these variants as well?

  6. I also noted there were no US mixes of Lucky, Drag Me Down, and Rain on In The Long Grass.  Rain is quite notorious, a lot of people have heard of it, but few have heard it. I find the UK versions superior, but as curiosities couldn't these have been included on the reissues?

  7. One of the most obvious omissions is ...House Burned Down from V Deep.  I accept it is little more than a reprise, but again, why was it discarded?

  8. The Ha Ha Has have moved to the end of The Fine Art of Surfacing.  I always thought these were integral to Sleep (and they make more sense there).  Why have they been moved to the end of the original album?

  9. There is no gap in Cheerio, which takes away a lot of sense from it.  Is there any reason for not preserving the gap?

  10. The spoken introduction (and the final pay-off of "What's all this got to do with Punk Rock then?") are both missing from Do the Rat.  Is there any reason for this?  Is it simply pandering to political corrrectness?

  11. The vinyl LP I have has the single version of Dave, but the album version here is quite different. I know it was on the recent Best of, but where did this album version of Dave come from? Was it ever released before?

  12. I know that the band tried other producers on Tonic, Surfacing and V Deep, before returning to Mutt Lange and Tony Visconti.   I even heard about a reggae version of I Don't Like Mondays.  Are there any unheard pleasures around?  Are there any plans to release them ?  Maybe as downloads on the bobgeldof.info site.

  13. Is it just my turntable, or are some of the tracks faster than the originals?  As an example, Joey's on the Street Again seems significantly faster.

  14. There are some session tracks and live tracks on the reissues.  The rest of the 1977 John Peel BBC session tracks were released as extra tracks on the Geldof Crazy single. The 1978 Peel sessions along with the BBC recording from Middlesex Polytechnic the same year would make a great CD. The sets from Self Aid/Live Aid are also  What chance is there of a live album or a sessions album?

  15. People do have some of these tracks in their private collections, and would be willing to distribute them. Would you contemplate providing missing tracks as downloads on the official site?

ArrGee,

Great questions, guru indeed  And a fellow pedant, eh?

You question 15 is most pertinent. I will not contemplate downloads unless they have been officially sanctioned (a la Gung Ho), even though I know there are some gems out there (the aforementioned Golddiggers concert is a particular fav e.g. if you ever wished Fingers' piano on 'Lucky' and 'Dave' were higher in the mix then look no further...)

Re: your link. If "Tracks in italics have mixes/lyrics that differ from the re-released album" then 'Tonight' should be considered for inclusion: I may be remembering wrong but I think the 7 inch mix was slightly shorter than the ITLG version, missing the horn part just before the end where BG isn't repeating the word 'tonight', perhaps?

I will highlight it.  I only have the 12", so wasn't aware of the difference.  Thanks!
