OK I'm calling selling 4200 tickets a sell out gig. Personally I don't think Geldof could have sold anywhere near 4200 tickets for a gig in Cork, at the Marquee or anywhere else. Wonder what Bobs conclusion will be?
Certainty not knocking his solo efforts but it seems that The Boomtown Rats is what most of the fans want to see, and voted by coming along to the gig.
I think the biggest crowd he played to in UK and Ireland in recent years as a standalone gig was probably Cadogan Hall. It wasn't sold out, but there were probably about 800 people in.
I don't think the Hay Festival gigs should count though they may have been bigger crowds.
He has played to large crowds as festivals, but that's different. As an aside, The Rats were getting no more than 200 or so for the gigs I attended.

Not sure how many was at Islington Town Hall 600-800 maybe? Excluding festivals where the band is an option of a few available choices, the Cork gig was phenomenal in terms of a comeback.
I think the beam on Garry's face said it all. It would be nice to hear Geldof interviewed in light of these recent Rats appearances. Don't think I've seen any detailed account from him yet.
Bob is sitting somewhere wondering 'where did it all go right?' Interesting that Geldof said he wanted to go 'back to Boomtown for a while'. I think he may try to get an extension on his visa. That is unless he hates playing to bigger audiences, and selling out venues.
In my opinion not a chance. have been to a few of geldofs solo gigs and just a few 100 turn up, As good as some of geldofs solo stuff is they never hit the heights of the rats songs, Same as when cott left the rats never had another big hit well house on fire if u call getting to number 24 a hit. The 1st 3 LPs cott played lead in every song But listen to Mondo bongo you can count on ur left hand how many times he played lead on the songs

He did play all of Whitehall 1212, so that was his shift. More seriously, Visconti simply didn't rate him, and effectively sidelined him and Garrick. Visconti didn't really think too much of any of them , except Simon Crowe. Acording to TV, Geldof couldn't sing, Fingers was lazy, the guitarists couldn't play and Briquette did too many overdubs. Not really sure why they got him back for the next album.

The guitar sound on Straight Up is brilliant- one of the best tracks on Mondo Bongo-really punchy, crunchy sound.
