What fell on your head?? Can't have been a hairy lemon - that would have been soft, and probably a bit squishy!
Yes, I want to see some photos etc, but am sure the Roundhouse will be EVEN better, so will try not to feel too bad ... Hope you all enjoy it anyway - I still haven't watched that BBC4 interview - maybe I'll do that instead!
I was expecting advertising, nothing at all. It's been a long time since their 'sons' played there. Come on Dublin welcome them home. No mention anywhere. A man in the pub last night had no idea they were playing this weekend.
From memory there's an electronic promo board outside Vicar St that rotates for a few seconds through all upcoming events. Maybe just didn't get to them as you passed?
Someone somewhere got something right if Sat sold out (albeit a smallish venue). My gut feel is word will spread after Sat and Sun will be full or close to as well. Some might even revisit

Geldof didn't write the lines:'stab you in the back yeah/laughing in you face/glad to see the place again/it's pity nothing's changed...' for nothing.
Not sure if a random man in a pub is the best way to gauge interest.
So it was all the more striking that, despite the songs inevitable dating, the performance itself never felt like an exercise in nostalgia. In recent interviews Geldof has asserted that he is as angry now as the day he stepped off the ferry from Dublin in 1976 and that chip-on-shoulder chutzpah blazed all evening. After all he has been through and achieved, Geldofs ability to tap the inchoate rage of his youth was remarkable.
That review is mostly bull****. Everyone I spoke to said how brilliant it was. The band and the audience were on top form. And that is from me, who is not really a Rats fan. They did Howard Hughes. Did they do that before? Bob got a swollen eye and cut on his nose from Darren's guitar when they were in a huddle. Very visible in pics.
Saturday night was very good, a full house and great reaction. But last night, Sunday, the band and Geldof in particular put on the performance of a lifetime. Certainly ranks of one of my best gigs ever. Geldof was electric, like a man possessed, so in the zone it was unbelievable.
I would say the venue was at least three quarters full, if not more. The crowd was just brilliant and anybody thinking this band has no fans will have been dealt a serious rethink. It was just special.
Re Daily Mail comments- I didn't see anybody leave the gig, I saw people of all ages going mental for the Rats, and for a sixty two year old man Geldof was in overdrive, hardly stopping between songs to catch his breath.
Good to meet all the crew Suss, Jules and Howard, Scottie, Musicmania (could talk for Kildare), the girls from Germany, the boys from cork, two lads from Kerry,a mad Scotsman, an a man in the corridor suffering from after gig shellshock( the gig had been so good he was visibly affected, and we had a short chat to confirm it was not just our imaginations!
Roll on London.

When the Rats burst on the scene all those years ago, Geldof shocked with his disrespectful attitude to Irish institutions, then set about putting his money where his mouth was to try and change the world. Perhaps hes earned the right to grow old disgracefully.
Fans of the not-so-gracefully aging star watched on in dismay as Mr Geldof danced in white shoes and a creased black shirt. The frail star shook his sweaty silver hair as he jerked his limbs around a microphone stand in front of the Irish New wave band.
Fcuk me, I hope he keeps going for another couple of weeks, sounds like he's at death's door ....
Fantastic as ever. Set list. Nothing new. The Boomtown Rats as usual at beginning and end, but not worthy of inclusion.
Were there any decent tour T-Shirts ? Was it full? Did anyone get the CD of the gig? Does it have ALL the set on it? Are there any pictures or videos?
First encore last night was a treat - Never Bite The Hand That Feeds, replacing Elephants Graveyard from Sat night.
T-shirts are good; a variety including black with dates on and the 'new' Rat logo that looks like some cartoon evil mouse, or white with dates and the slightly revised as per stage backdrop Rat logo on front. Other shirts mainly have large font band name. Ladies might be disappointed as no tailored slim fit ones on sale though.
Sat was full (1600), and about 1000 last night. Got the CD, but not played it at all yet. Only just back . Told it has entire set plus encores though, making the sale 10 minutes post gig all the more impressive!
General concensus was the band were a little bit tighter last night, but both nights excellent.

Its frightening that people still buy the Daily Mail. I could understand it if it was cheaper than bog roll. ALL the crowd looked on in dismay at Geldof? Really?
Surely no such thing as bad publicity - or as Oscar Wilde said, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." I wouldn't take it too seriously. Read anything on BBC news website or yahoo, it's full of rubbish too and quite nasty comments from people on comments pages. I honestly don't think people take much notice of stuff in the media - it's ALL to generate headlines even from more worthy newspapers! Most people would just think they're glad that even rock superstars don't look their best at times! And somehow I think Bob wouldn't really want the papers to idolise him or bow down to him - I think it gives him more street cred if they slag him off! Though it's obviously very wounding to his fans ... But reality is the tickets to gigs are selling well and people are enjoying seeing them.
So yes I'll admit buying that crap - yet it certainly does not mean I believe everything or indeed anything in it. Not interested in politics, just want an overview of what is happening in the outside world - and the cartoons/puzzles/women's health pages are quite good! (especially the cartoons!) Keeps me amused whilst "watching" son's swimming session and not bad for 60p. Had some vouchers recently for half price Guardian - to be honest, couldn't find enough time to fully read/understand any of it! And not prepared to pay more money if I don't get time to read it just so that I can look good in others' eyes ... Guess that's why I'm reading Harry Potter at the moment and not War and Peace
Anyway glad to know from those really in the know, that the gigs were great! But hope he wasn't really wearing white shoes - will have to bring my sunglasses to the Roundhouse if he does ..
If you think it's cr@p , why buy it? Only reason to buy cr@p is to put it on the roses.
I don't read the Daily Muck (sic) much except for online when a search hits it, but they seem to always grab the sh!tty end of the stick as far as any story is concerned. Rather than actually write about the concert (which the other papers do), they write about the frail old geezer in the snake skin suit jerking around the microphone.
Back in the sixties, they probably would be slagging off Jackie's outfit and not even mention that JFK got shot.
Because I don't think all of it is crap - I told you the cartoons are great! Besides if you don't read it, how do you know it's crap? And I'm not into gardening - but it is useful to get the wood burner alight ...
If it looks like cr@p and smells like cr@p then in all likelihood it is.
Every time I do a google search and it links to the Daily Muck (sic) I happen upon their homophobic bigoted opinions. And their incredible scientific insight "Just ONE cannabis joint can bring on schizophrenia..."
A graphical representation of data in a typical Daily Mail story
Talking to Garry briefly afterwards, and saying how good it was to hear a 'new' song, he couldn't recall a time when any incarnation had played it live.
On the odd occasion the Daily Fail is in this house (courtesy of my other half, I may add) I just think they write what they think their target audience wants to hear. So much of it you think is rubbish, that when a subject matter you know pretty damn well emerges (like the way Rats' gigs are going down generally very well indeed), you absolutely know for certain they are overwhelmingly talking utter garbage. Very rarely, they are actually a force for good (bringing Stephen Lawrence's killers to book for instance) but mostly, they are not.
I don't buy it, a link was highlighted to me.its actually laughable what was printed compared to what really happened. Think the journalist was actually in space. Saw Alan at the airport and mentioned it. He said to write and tell them.
I thought the gig was absolutely brilliant; and looking around the packed house on Saturday night all I could see was excitable grins and even the balcony people on their feet clapping and shouting along during the huge hits like 'She's so Modern'
The atmosphere was amazing at least where I was, and it seemed to be for all of the venue; not sure what the Daily Star were miffed about. The band sounded wonderful, such a great sound mix, and the songs sparkled with energy. Those songs will never grow old, it's such a pity their back catalogue isn't as revered or even known like some of their peers. The Rats wrote some incredible songs, pure pop gold, and even on their final album in 1984 had enough songs that had that 'florid pop genius'.
I wish I could have attended night Number2, but with a 4 week old baby girl at home my gigs are extremely limited^ Seeing the Rats was an absolute MUST though.
May i ask - what if any songs were different on Sunday besides 'Never Bite the hand that Feeds'?

Glad you enjoyed the gig IC. The only different song was Never Bite The Hand That Feeds, replacing Elephant's Graveyard in the encore. I though Sunday night they just moved up a few gears from an already great performance on Saturday.
I very much doubt that Geldof will be packing it in with the Rats anytime soon. I would think it highly likely the Rats will play Dublin again.
Thank Gpd! I would love to have attended the second Dublin show, and Belfast also, but take solace in being at home taking care of the little one while listening to lots of Rats at moment and playing the DVD's!
It would be great if they returned to Dublin; Saturday night was thrilling :)
Off home to listen to Boston 1980 now, been addicted to this bootleg all weekend, they're on fiery form!
Had 'Mondo Bongo' on this morning before coming to work; always a favourite of mine - not as excellent as the preceeding albums, but enough pure gold on it to make it a great album. Not sure what they were thinking with 'Another Piece of Red' and 'Mood Mambo', but any album with magic like Hurt Hurts, Go Man Go, Banana Republic, Under their Thumb, Elephants Graceyard...even the atmospherics of This is my Room, and the three great B-Sides; a fascinating album
27 long years... And now they play Lookin' after No. 1 at Hüsker Dü speed, unbelievable. Thanks to the YouTube film directors (but please cut off the f...ing (digital) zoom button). Can't wait for the Roundhouse gig. Seems there are still tickets available.

I find the footage on YouTube can never capture the energy and feeling of the gig itself. I was a bit fed up with all the people too who were pointing their camera phones at the stage during the gig, who didn't seem to actually want to watch the gig live, only to have a recording of it for later.
Why can't people just be there, in the moment, and pay attention to the real gig onstage. Also my sight line was 'interrupted' by glaring camera phones all around me, at different times. Not throughout the whole gig, but periodically. Most of this footage is rubbish anyway, with bad quality picture and sound, and does not do justice to the gig when we watch it on YouTube.
Another bane of modern technology is people checking for messages during songs.
I doubt Emma would be able to keep going onstage as long as Bob! The 'story' is a complete distortion of the real event and all who enjoyed it. Wonder would she choose to insult Mick Jagger or Leonard Cohen on grounds of frailty?
Presumably the Mail sent her to Dublin, paid for posh hotel, air fare, and concert ticket and expenses allowance, taxis etc.
On the other hand we live in a democracy and I believe in free speech so we have to live with with journalists distorting the world for their own ends.

I do not fully agree with you Noel, but in I can understand your feelings about some "cameramen". These "Japanese Tourists" simply don't enjoy the show, but enjoy the comments on YouTube the day after. Or don't, if they used the f...ing zoom button continuously (why do you need a zoom button anyway, no professional cameraman uses it while the red lamp shines, only in preview). But as long as they are filming unnoted, then it's no problem to me.
I went to the cozy Cavern Club last weekend to see The Cavern Club Beatles (rather scary as three of them look exactly like John, Paul and George and they sound exactly like the Fab4... really awesome) and I filmed some 6 songs, using a tripod, in HD-HQ/5.1 surround sound. No one complained, as all of the people there are very friendly (and funny!). I don't put that footage on YouTube, but back in Amsterdam I showed it to some mates. They wereimmediately enthusiastic in such way that they wanna go soon to Liverpool too. And that's the way it works: if I didn't see some Isle of Wight footage of the BTR I still would have been very skeptical about the comeback tour. But now I've seen them playing like a turbo jet engine (and again in Vicar Street!) I can't find a reason why I would NOT pay 250,- (train ticket and Roundhouse ticket) to see them in London. Thanks to YouTube and not the stupid reviews in some daily papers: don't believe what you read (again!).
Anyway Noel, I don't carry my video camera with me to The Roundhouse . If the BTR fever continues the next weeks (and why not) I trust that there will be a professional video recording. I pre-ordered already the Live CD, thanks to Jules for the alert.
I fully agree with you if people are twittering, reading their e-mails or (as I experienced recently in Amsterdam) are even phoning during a concert. Please Sir Bob, send those people to the moon!!!
Just a couple of comments until I write my review which DPNLive has confirmed to publish. Suffice to say it will be more accurate than the Daily Fail!
Regarding people recording at concerts while there is a lot of crap videos there can also be some gems. I do agree with Noel that it can be very annoying when people hold phones in the air and block peoples views. I seldom record as I'm not very good at it and prefer to leave it to those who are better but I do take lots of photos. However this is usually by camera only and I have all sounds and lights turned off and use the viewfinder so not to disturb my neighbours and those behind me! That red light you mention is for use in low light conditions but given the stage at concerts is light it means using that light is pointless anyway so like the flash (which is also not needed for concert conditions!) it should be kept off! The camera police in Vicar Street meant I had to resort to my phone for photos which was annoying as we do not have professional cameras, I wish I did! I am bringing a smaller camera to Belfast in the hope I'm left alone.
Here are links for my photos. Night one with camera and night two mostly phone.
Great meeting up with friends for the gigs and Noel I think you mean I could talk for Ireland Was super excited for the concerts so was even more talkative than usual
I'll post a link for my review as soon as it is published which will probably be a couple of days by the time I've wrote it and the editors edit and post.

I totally 100% agree with noelindublin.
Why the fcuk turn up if all you want to do is film it? I don't want to see a hundred fcuking iPhone views of the concert. I don't want to fcuking hear people shouting down the phone to their mates who ain't fcuking even there. It is fcuking rude to get your mobile out and have a conversation when a stranger is stood next to you. I can't even sit on a bus or a train without listening to some fcuking inane conversation from some cnut with nothing better to do.
Even at the football last night with about a hundred cameras trained on the action some cnut decided to film the crowd behind him with his fcuking mobile light on. If you can't put your fcuking mobile phone away for an hour and a half then fcuk off somewhere else and use it.
Another bane of modern technology is people checking for messages during songs.
The other night some cnut got his phone out mid-conversation and said he hadn't checked it for an hour. A whole fcuking hour! Obviously better times to be had somewhere else...
Has MusicMania met Joan Of Arc? Who would win that battle of the gobs? The both have very bubbly outgoing personalities it would interesting to watch them in conversation.

I don't want to overplay the phone camera thing, but one guy in front of me was constantly adjusting the focus or zoom. I don't bother with cameras and just watch the gig, and can remember lots more by paying attention to the gig itself.
I just particularly noticed it on Sunday night when at one stage, there were three people using camera phones at the same time, right beside me. If it gets bad I always subtly try to move away.
I had my camera on view finder, but when told to stop moved over to my iPhone. Apologies if I disturbed you. I tried to take fewer pictures than usual. People were leaning Over me to take pictures. I hold my camera at my eye level, so should be below everyone's eye level, I hope!
LOL. Someone should have told me to shut up! I'm surprised Bob didn't! No haven't met Joan of Arc
So ArrGee are you saying you never watch YouTube footage of the concerts? I know some people don't so it isn't a smart comment, just a curious question as we have had similar discussions on Leonard Cohen's Forum. I personally think if you are able to record a) without disturbing people and b) can do a good job then do it as I love watching good videos!

Someone asked about the live CDs; I bought Saturday nights @20 and was impressed by sound and gatefold cover ... no track listing, just a Vicar Street sticker. Generic pic disc for every gig. When I think back to the days of the tape recorder down the crotch .............
I do occasionally record for a short while. They go on my FB page only, not sure the band are too happy about things going on YouTube without permission.
So ArrGee are you saying you never watch YouTube footage of the concerts?
No. I do watch them and I look at the photographs from the concerts. But, I generally find them to be so sh!te, I wonder why people bother.
YouTube isn't the issue as such, as there is a lot of really good stuff on there. They broadcasted most of the Rats set from the Isle of Wight and there is a really good Geldof gig from Paris as well.
What I object to is people who think they have the right to go to the front and then hold their phone aloft in front of all assembled to make a sh!tty video to put up on YouTube, so they can tell people they were there. Well, you fcuking ain't there if that's your bag.
IF you really really have to record the gig then stand at the side or the back. Don't get in the fcuking way.
PS - Mobile phone addicts are cnuts. This morning, I was walking towards a door behind someone doing something on their phone who stood to one side to let me open the door for them and then walked through without a word of thanks. The number of these cnuts who near enough walk into me every day is unbelievable. And the queue at the sandwich bar is really funny seeing everyone glued to their screens. Using a mobile phone when you are with another person is incredibly rude.
However, the cheeky cnuts think people who pull them up on their excessive rudeness are the rude ones... (sigh)
And why these cnuts have to continually check their phones at the movies is beyond me. The other week, after constantly checking her oh so important messages, a woman then preceded to take a picture of her son with a flash. I had a polite word with her, but I really wanted to grab the phone and smash it to pieces.
PPS - I do have a mobile phone. I actually have two as I have to have a separate one for work. And I have been know to take a snap or two on them. But I don't have it out for the whole damn concert, football match or whatever.
And what about the bastards with their mobiles against their ear driving along the road, and even around corners! Unbelievable! And yes I hate people who walk through doors without a word of thanks - and some of them aren't even on the phone ..
Mental note to myself - for fukcs sake leave phone at bottom of handbag and on silent on the 26th - and leave the newspaper on the train (yeah yeah, maybe in the loo and then everybody can wipe their ass on it - tee hee!)
My videos are always cr@p, they are really just a physical memory for me. I know some like to see them, especially if they couldn't get there. My photos are a mixed bag lol.
I can't remember which cinema or movie but I remember there was a warning to patrons about mobile usage before. Disgraceful behaviour and arrogant. There was an idiot on the bus today shouting into his phone with his hand over his mouth. Was that bad those near him moved!
Yeah driving using the mobile is bad form and is illegal here. It doesn't stop people though.
Another growing phenomenon is idiots using ipads at concerts! There is even a warning about that on The O2 Dublin's website.
I stand by what I said previously, if you can take photos/videos and not disturb others well and good but some people don't have the manners to do this.

Ah yes, these w@nkers should be hanged.
... if you can take photos/videos and not disturb others well and good but some people don't have the manners to do this.
but it really isn't the case. Never has anyone in front of me asked if I minded. I do mind. At Hurtwood, people deliberately elbowed their way in only to stick their phones up. The security at The Roundhouse should show no tolerance for this sort of thing and kick people out.

Anyone who barges through the crowd deserves to be kicked out, be it to get photos or just to get closer. My attitude is if you want to at the front come early otherwise fcuk off. At the gig on Sunday night there were a couple of men old enough to be collecting pensions who were really annoying. One was shouting to Bob to give him the microphone and then asked me would I move from the barrier so he could climb over and get on the stage and the other kept trying to reach out to get Bob's attention. Neither were there at the start of the gig so had to have pushed through others.
There was an obnoxious cnut at a a gig I was at a few years back shoving everyone and being a right pain in the neck and the crowd started chanting "burn the witch" LOL. Security heard and dragged her out. At least this side of the Atlantic that happens. I was at gigs in the US where people were removed for different offences and then let back in to re-offend. That is really annoying!

LOL don't hold back. I think if someone held an ipad in front of me at a gig I'd be tempted to "accidently" knock it out of their hands.

I had the same on Saturday night, a guy right infront of me video taping songs; usually of course we do all like seeing YouTube videos of gigs, but it was just the position - right in front of 2 of us, quite tall, and not much room to move so we were looking at the songs through his big phone.
I asked him nicely to put it down, we paid to see the Rats, not to see the Rats through his camera.
Like the review, but call me picky, the song ain't called Modern Girl Oh and I don't like the eponymous song either.
My other favourite songs over the two nights included Modern Girl and Like Clockwork and hearing Never Bite The Hands That Feeds at the second concert. Rat Trap always sounds great with the sax. The one song I dont really like is the new song The Boomtown Rats.
This is not a mere best of show: the songs ooze vitality and the performance is rich with innovative twists. An explosive Mary Of The Fourth Form tailspins into the Mississippi Delta, as they slink through John Lee Hookers Boom Boom before the blitzkrieg pace is resumed with a raucous Lookin After Number 1.
The night closes with impressive new track The Boomtown Rats. Theres life in the old rodents yet, it seems...
