The reason it is shocking is that Geldof is in there at all! Down the years the NME have hardly had a good word to say on Geldof, and now here he is nominated along with four of the NME's most feted.

Carl Barat (ex-Libertine singer - topped 2004 NME Cool list)

Pete Doherty (ex-Libertine singer - topped 2004 NME Cool list)

Liam Gallagher (Oasis lead singer - more or less to of cool list)

Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys lead singer - topped 2005 NME Cool list)

Bob Geldof (err, never appeared on NME cool list!)

Don't worry Geldof won't actually win.

As for the one word/emoticon replies, I suppose it ups the post count though as far as I'm concerned they just are a waste of my bandwidth.

Great to hear the NME behind Bob. He deserves to win (let's face it there isn't much competition) and make it a first for the NME to have Bob at the top of one of their lists.

I can remember hating the NME because of its dislike of the Rats/Bob when I was a kid

. I might just forgive them if he is voted hero of the year.

Are the NME at last beginning to realise that Bob is a very talented singer songwriter in his own right, and has much more talent in his little finger than all the others put together? Or will it be just another excuse to do some Bob bashing?

Yes, another excuse for Bob bashing!

It may be stating the bleeding obvious, but Geldof hasn't been nominated for his singing or songwriting. I still think the NME hold continued disdain for that!

.....so I suppose there is a slim chance that because the vote is out of the hands of the esteemed journalists, there is a miniscule possibility that Geldof could bag a brat!

I've always found it hard to take NME seriously. Too much full of it's own self-importance.

They abhor most of what is mainstream and popular and have just plain got it wrong about so many acts............

Yet musicians seem to covet their good opinion.

From that list, Bob is undoubtedly the only hero. In fact the other nominees are only heroes in the sense that they have some level of artistic freedom regardless of the opinion of others.

Hope Bob wins!

Unbelievable.... Its the only word to describe this... I mean never mind Liam Gallagher, the words Pete Doherty & Hero just don't go together.. Its an insult to Bobs integrity to have him on this list. As for NME, the one time I bought it I thought it was rubbish, Give me Q or Mojo any day...

Bad joke , I know. IF Bob does win and decides to turn up , his acceptance speech may be very interesting. Even in the 70s , you did not believe anything written in the NME. It really is the "News of the World" of music magazines, isnt it? I dont think they understand the meaning of the word Hero. They should go and look it up in the dictionary.

I would disagree with that. I think it is the last remnant of the old music press (remember Sounds , Record Mirror & Melody Maker), and has managed to evolve and still be relevant (certainly more so than the dire Q).

My only beef is they can be a little obsessive about acts. In recent years, you could play the name dropping game. Back in 2002, it was how many times they could mention The Strokes. the baton has since passed on to the Libertines, Franz, Bloc Party and this year's faves, the Arctic Monkeys. I swear they even have arcticles (sic) specially written to name check them!

Ok, they are grossly unfair to some good acts (Razorlight & Stereophonics are the new Rats!), but at least it is an interesting read.

The thing which annoyed me about the NME is was that they used to be behind unknown acts, but if they started to gain any popularity they'd start to slag them off. Many bands gain fandom for a reason, and it isn't usually because they suddenly lose their talent.
