26th!  What is that all about?

But these comments are so true!

E O'Connor, hotpress.com:

"My older brother got A Tonic For The Troops free with a hotpress subscription back in 1978 and we just played it like crazy. This was the sound of Ireland and the world as we knew it in ‘78. I still play it today – the songs are great and it brings back memories of a simpler time. Walk, don’t walk, Talk, don’t talk!"

Ja Walsh, hotpress.com:

"When you’re young, innocent and naive, you have to look to your elders to see what’s really going on, and in 1978, A Tonic For The Troops was it. For a wet-behind-the-ears pre-teen (even before the term existed!) these songs were all classics. Every word was learnt off and every copybook was adorned with a picture to represent each song. But best of all was that, in singing these songs, you could say things that you would never get away with in normal conversation. God bless Sir Bob and the Rats for this gem. For a record of its time, it's now timeless."

Now that is good to see. And as for U2, they seem to dominate it, along with the Pogues and the Corrs. Thin Lizzy feature in there too.

Oh, so many bands I used to like in there! Still like, I should say, but haven't listened to in ages. For example The Hothouse Flowers or An Emotional Fish! Sultans of Ping FC... And The Frank and Walters... They bring back good memories, I don't know how I could forget these names!

It's a good list, though I miss "Regeneration" by The Divine Comedy, and that album by The Power of Dreams - I really liked them, some eons ago...

The Pouges are NOT Irish.  They formed in London, the majority of the band were born in England (bar two Dubliners and Cait who was born in Nigeria). They should not be on that list.  And if they are, then Oasis could claim to be as Irish.

Can't believe that Damien Rice is the 2nd best Irish album..... (words fail me, the Irish James Blunt)

Yep!

I seem to remember Ireland disowning them for donkeys years as bad caricatures of what Irish folk is meant to be about - songs about getting drunk all the time & shouting pro-IRA stuff. It was only when Terry Woods was brought on board & they did a joint record with The Dubliners that they were treated seriously by the "Arts" crowd over the pond.
