I would love it If the Rats did come out with the best of, as in singles only. As much as I like the Lp version's of Mondays,Someones looking, Mary, Elephant's graveyard, Banana republic & House of fire. I love the single version's of them songs. And I find it very hard to get them on cd Anyone agree
I agree totally. I doubt it will ever happen as the masters have probably been lost. None of the various Best Ofs (Loudmouth, Best Of, Rat****s) have been perfect. The 2005 Best of is the best, yet it omits House on Fire.
In a ideal world there would be a double CD with all the singles on one disc and all the non-album B-sides on the other. OK, might have to suffer Charmed Lives, but a small price to play.
Some of the original single mixes can be found on CD. Mondays is on a number of compilations and Banana Republic can be found with some persistence. Check out Spotify. Mary is in both forms on the remastered debut. However, I have yet to find Clockwork, Rat Trap (grime less), Someone's Looking, Elephant's Graveyard or House on Fire CD in the proper single form. Dave is an odd one, on the remastered Drag Me Down the single mix is the album mix and vice versa.
However, they are all (bar Rat Trap) on the Someone's Looking DVD from 2005. All you need is a DVD audio ripper and you can create your own CD.
Is the Banana Republic single mix not on Back to Boomtown? Previously, I have found the various edits of this song unfamiliar and unsatisfying but like the Back to Boomtown version whereby the song starts with the well known terrific cymbal crash.

I never bought ratsh!ts. Just downloaded Back To Boomtown and Ratlife ep. I don't it is the original single mix. Not sure which compilation it turned up on, I think it was a German one. If you don't have the record, original is on the DVD as well.
The Elephant's Graveyard single omitted the final verse, cutting the song down in it's glory. You can just hear the scissors snip on the single version (not literally of course). The longer version of EG is better in my opinion. When the Rats play EG they play the full version not the 'radio edit' single.

I always thought the single edit of Graveyard was a bit pointless. At 3:43, the lp version is hardly long and the song sounds so much more complete with the Sky Burns Bright verse.

lOL it's like your not getting value for your money when they edit the song. I was used to listening to Mondo Bongo full version back in '81 and when the single came on the radio with the final verse missing I always felt a bit disappointed. But some dj most likely would be chattering over the last verse anyway, so it probably didn't matter too much.
Agree with all of you on this one, and I also think EG is a much better song not edit. Only one's for me missing are house on fire someone's looking at you Mary EG I have the rest on other cds late 70s 80s stuff. Trust me a lot of the songson them are sh?t on them 70s/80s cds but had get the to get the Rats edit singles
Have we got a catalogue of what's where with the single/album discrepancies, as in where you could find the single edit somewhere other than original 7"?
From memory the eligible are:-
Mary
Clockwork
Rat Trap
Mondays
Someone's Looking
Banana Republic
Elephant's Graveyard
House on Fire
Dave
and I suppose Up All Night
Anyone able to list where on CD or even vinyl compilations you can find the unadulterated single versions?
(Will save me hours of listening to what I do have and hours of researching what I don't )
Same with this cd Mondays the single is on it along with Looking after No 1. I also came across a ska cd which has the single version of Banana R What ever that was about didn't think I would ever come across that song a ska hits??
Another one for the single/album discrepancies list: 'Tonight' single has a few missing bars near the end of the song when compared to the ITLG version.
