Give or take I would say the current setlist is perfect. A nice emphasis towards their earlier rock material and less dance music of their later career. There are some songs that'd be cool to see at all or on a more regular basis for me (Elephant's Graveyard, Me And Howard Hughes) and also (Drag Me Down).
I love the first 3 albums and these shows have showcased just how great these earlier songs are. I would love to hear these songs but have no idea what I would cut to add them in. For me highlight performances every time have been (I Never Loved Eva Braun, Someone's Looking At You, Joey's On The Streets Again, Close As You'll Ever Be and When The Night Comes).
I'm 23- never thought I would have the chance to see the Boomtown Rats, And now have seen them 4 times (Isle Of Wight, Bournemouth, London Roundhouse and Wychwood Festival).
They are a truly mighty band. Geldof seems to be hitting a performance career peak.
All this speculation among us about other tracks we'd like to hear but if any of the chosen few were omitted we'd be clamouring for them. From a neutral's perspective, who may well own one of the best of compilations, hearing pretty much very track makes it the perfect set list in that respect.
Can't see me ever getting tired of that guitar launch into Eva Braun after the intro, and the rest of set is well thought out in pace and also familiarity. If I changed anything it would be Diamond Smiles with the band intros to close main set, then come back on fro Rat Trap.
I only saw the band as was a few times, maybe a dozen, when I was nearer your age, and on reflection I'd have given anything to hear this set back then. And agreed, would defy anyone to say they've lost that power or ability to put on a show.

It's great to have younger fans on board. Was at Wynchwood also, and noticed many fans in their twenties and thirties and many teenagers as well. None of the performances I've seen since they reformed (lost count, about 9 I think!)have been anything less than 100%.
Geldof puts everything into the performance and even though he's probably done Mondays and Rat Trap hundreds of times it always seems fresh, never tired or jaded. His voice was a bit croaky at Wynchwood but that was on the back of 2 gigs the previous 2 nights. I think he's a pretty remarkable performer, or certainly a good 'actor'!
I think Do The Rat may go down better than The Boomtown Rats as it would be a fun way to end to gigs and Dave might be a good inclusion too.
No. Setlist in 1978 was far better. Just my opinion mind...

Well, I guess you had to be there.
Did see Razorlight last night who nearly played the perfect set which was pretty much the first two albums. Only obvious omissions were Kirby's House and Wire To Wire which they could have played instead of a couple of less familiar B-sides, but I really can't complain. Had the Rats done similar they'd have played everything off the first two albums along with Do The Rat and Barefootin' which would suit me fine.

Agree with above re my trips to Mcr and Bham last year. On some dates, 5 tracks have been played from Surfacing and it can more than hold it's own against the superb Tonic. Banana and Graveyard show Mondo was not without massive highlights and the voting for Go Man Go elsewhere on here show that not just Ireland should have been graced with it's release.

My vote goes to last years set list as well. As far as I'm aware in their original formation the Rats never did a best of tour. In '84 and '85 they didn't even bother play Mondays live, so song for song it's a better setlist now, with the obvious exception of 'The Boomtown Rats' which would be better replaced by one of the singles off the last album.
That's not to say the songs themselves are performed better now than in the past. As Noel says Geldof gives 100% everytime, but at times when he's with the Rats he tries too hard and goes beyond his vocal limitations. At 60+ his voice understandably struggles to offer the power of the past and becomes more of a shout rather than melodic. He gets away with it live because he's a great show man and the atmosphere etc but listening at home to the live recordings it can be a bit harsh at times. Its still great to have them back though!

Agree with Junkyard above, but in March '85 at the Birmingham Odeon on New Street, they definitely played Mondays live.
Also played Mondays at the Belfast In the long grass tour Feb 85. The song is also on the In the long grass dvd (On a night like this) So don't know where Junkyard get the info from?

Must have just been me being unfortunate then because they didn't play Mondays at Redcar in '84, or at Middlesbrough in '85 and also recall an NME review of a gig on the In the Long Grass tour where the reviewer expressed surprise at the lack of hits in the setlist including the omission of Mondays.

for me the Fine art of surfacing tracks and banana republic have been massive highlights of the tour for me
The only song I never seem to like live is Banana Republic.Live Geldof somehow changes the melody and makes it sound very childish- it certainly manages to come off a lot worst to my ears anyway, live. Plus the endless padding and elongation just bores me. A bit of a muso workout.
I like the record. It maintains the integrity of the tune rather than mangling it,and it gets the message across in about 4 minutes. Though at Cheltenham Alan did manage some interesting bits on the keyboard that made my ears perk up, but still the record is a lot better.
