Really what is the point in ending it.people still care and still wear the bands.a new campaign just means starting from the bottom again.ah well

Probably because it had specific targets - e.g. targetting the G8 summit etc, and issues around that. The year 2005 was supposed to be the year. They are just moving on to something new, not really starting from the bottom, just moving to the next.

I understand what you mean though...

If any of your friends at school think Oxfam is jumping on the bandwagon, remind them them that Oxfam has been around campaigning and doing humanitarian work long before Bob, Richard Curtis Bono, or anyone in the MPH campaign were born

ah yes you see thats the thing.these people aren't my friends.me and the punk/ska crew are intelligent enough to get it but the majority of our school are chavs and townies and don't have a braincell between them.we've just started 'responding to poverty' in religious education and they haven't a blind clue

The trouble is that also reflects the rest of the world not just youngsters at school.

I agree & I'm a member of Oxfam. I don't think that MPH should have ended as even though it had certain aims poverty is not history. I still wear my band & will continue to do so. I say thank God for Oxfams & of course Bobs unrelenting hard work & at least they don't give up when a few goals are reached..

I've been defending Oxfam for 29 years. If it didn't exist this world would be an even worse place than it is now. Money has to go to administration, how could it run without its staff? I can't understand that argument, never have and never will.

I continue to wear my band too, even if the campaign is over it still sends out an important message.

I can partly understand the administration cost problem as I have a friend who works for a charity (which I can't name) & most of the time she has nothing to do. I can't understand why a charity would employ someone & then not have enough work for them. I think that all charities should declare what percentage of money is used in admin & it should cut out all the problems people have. Concern does this so I don't see why the rest can't..

I did know at one time how much Oxfam spent on admin, but that was several years ago (under 10 p in every pound). It probably isn't too hard to find out. Charities have to function and these days they operate as businesses and have to market themselves etc. Their employees are not paid competitively.

As far as I am aware Oxfam employees are kept very busy. That is appalling that your friend is not fully occupied at work. Why have they employed her? What a waste of money!!!

Cancer Research UK always used to declare how much in every pound goes towards research, it was well over 90p. But again that was years ago.

Interesting.. I know the place she works raises alot of money so the percentages would make an interesting read. My friend isn't happy with the situation. She thought she would be busy all the time or would never have taken the job. She is leaving at the end of May once she is finished a course that she is doing. That will make me alot happier because I don't like my friend being associated in what I consider a charity not making the best of its resources...

That would be a very uncomfortable position to be in. Has she handed her notice in yet and explained why she is leaving? It would be interesting to know what they say to her.
