Another best of album called So Modern is being released on the 13th of October.I guess it´s something to do with the autumn tour.No new tracks on it(latest being The Boomtown Rats).A bit naff if you ask me and yes I will order 10 copies.
Seen it. Good photo. Lets hope it is a best of this time round As in all the singles they put out and no album tracks on it And with a little bit of hope the singles mix of the songs
I didn't buy Back To Boomtown and I'm not buying this. The original Best of (circa 2005) is still available and is still the best compilation. The £4.99 price tag suggests it is a budget release, so don't expect extensive sleeve notes. I only bought the 6 CD box set of the albums I already had twice over cos I was too lazy to rip them all and let amazon do it for me.
May I ask why? Surely, like me, you have all of these tracks a few times over.
I realise this could come across as rude, which isn't the intention, but given you could burn a CD with the same track listing I don't know why you would buy it.
It's a rip off and you've been caught lol. I'd like to find out if there is anything different about the tracks. Are they live from various venues or just another order of studio recordings.
These days I tend to list mostly on my ipod and shuffle anyway, so little point in getting the same stuff in a different order. Even for the car.

I like the live albums from Concert Live and think they are really good, well except for the Rewind ones, which hopefully have been fixed up. It's good to hear the songs played with the current line up. I see no point to these hits compilations.

Ask away....with impunity! Of course, I have them several times over. Like you. Which by definition means you've been 'guilty' of repeat purchasing.
I suppose it's the new packaging, what the sleeve notes will say, the imagined loss of quality if I burned a cd (never done it, so this may be an unfounded fear), too lazy to look into how it's done, having a physical product that marks a point in time to look back on and so on.
I'm a fan, short for fanatic. Which makes people spend what others see as unnecessary purchases in the pursuit of commitment and enjoyment. It puts Suss on a plane to the US and miles on his car touring the UK.
I can't explain it better than that so too bad if you don't get it. I don't much like football, but get why others spend huge amounts of time and money watching 22 people kick a circular piece of air-filled leather around for 90 minutes.

It's a fan trap. And you've been caught.
I have at least four copies of every album in varied formats, and probably a dozen of A Tonic for the Troops, but I draw the line on compilations that cover everything I already have just because some corporation thinks it's a good wheeze to stick on some exclusive track or put them in a different order to fleece devotees.
About ten years ago Pulp released their Hits album and the drummer was interviewed about it and told people that if they didn't want to buy the whole CD to just download the new track. Which I did. I did end up buying the CD for a pound or two a while later.
I find it very tiresome when a band with a very serviceable hits album releases another with one or two extra tracks that were not previously available. Fortunately, it is easy to download the extra tracks these days and just have them on my MP3 player. Sometimes I burn them onto CD for the car. Absolutely no loss when you copy digital, so no quality issue.
I understand the fanatic thing, otherwise why would I be here, but this is just an irrelevant rehash of a hits album. And another I will avoid like the 20th Century Masters and The US Greatest Hits. And Back to Boomtown.
I have at least four copies of every album in varied formats, and probably a dozen of A Tonic for the Troops.
Aside from the most recent box set (which I only ever justified as it put all the songs on amazon cloud for a tenner every copy I have is a prized possession.
I did sell my Colombia CD of Fine Art of Surfacing just prior to the re-releases in 2005. I bought back it again after I heard the botch job on the remasters. I bought and sold a CD; made a fortune inbetween
Only compilations I have are Loudmouth and Best of. I suspect I paid bottom dollar for each when they hit the bargain racks as I did with every Geldof record post-Vegetarians.
Out of interest, ArrGee, what is it about Tonic that 12 versions have been acquired? I presently can't see how I am 'victim' of unnecessary and irrelevant corporate rehashing and you're not.
Ironically, I didn't get the latest box set, but might now eil.com have it for less than £19 in their sale. Just over £3 a cd sounds good value to me in a package like this, whether or not I'm an irritating duplicationist!
My mother could be like this. Why do you need to get this, when you've already got that etc etc. She'd normally do it in between inhalations of the 25 cigarettes she used to smoke each day, oblivious to the rank hypocrisy she exuded alongside her nicotine breath.

I done that for some reason. When A Rats new single would come out. I would get two of them. Always playing one and keeping the other like new. Never did with the LPs. Regarding Tonic I do have 3 copies of this the US mix Then it came out in the late 80s with the 3 B side's and the 2005 mix

Did a count and it is actually eight copies. The original Ensign Lp plus a replacement due to overplaying. The US Lp. The US CD. Then the UK CD with the b sides. Then the demo of the remaster which I was given to review. The 2005 remaster which was a gift and finally the box set copy.
The only Rats CDs I have bought this century are The Best of and the 6 CD box set. Even the Concert Live one's were gifts (many thanks to the kindly forum member who shall remain anonymous and Mrs Arrgee who subsequently surprised me with them). I have spent a few quid on LPs and 7"/12"s to fill in some gaps.
I am not stating that I don't over indulge, I am just puzzled why anyone who has all the tracks would buy what appears to be a budget cash in CD. I wasn't intending to be rude as I said or accuse anyone of being a victim. I am just curious about why.
I gave my explanation. If you're still curious, I can't help that. I don't think you're being rude and I hope you don't think I am. I just think you're not much different to me or others on this.

Don't see you saying anything wrong in what you are saying here. Fair play each to there own
My bestest favest album was TFTT - recorded off the older children of my parents' friends' album onto a cassette tape and played to death! Then the realisation of an earlier LP - wow that was truly amazing, then the FAOS bought for me by my older brother for Xmas. Other albums followed but didn't excite me in quite the same way. But interest resparked in the last 5 years - an amazing first live gig for me in a little village in Norfolk courtesy of Simon and Garry, and now endless replaying of Rats CDs re-purchased, or given to me by dear friends. Not enough dosh to buy ALL of the duplicates, and not enough time to just sit and enjoy, but looking forward to gigs in Wolverhampton and London. So all in all life's not bad. Though seriously some of you guys are weird - real fanatics, but I love you anyway! xx
My best man (he's dead now, God rest his soul) once said that he wished he could like a group as much as I like the Rats and that in his life, he regretted not being fanatical about something. It came over as a compliment and I think that's how he meant it.
I'm acutely aware that many think I should have long grown out of this lark, but I think there's many more troubling things to be fanatical about. Religion always tops the list.

I get where ur coming from. Like yourself I was and still am(Sad I know) mad of this wee band and no one got me. I know this might be pushing it But for me they would have been like the Beatles where to there fan's in the 60s and when I would point this out most of the time I was told to p?ss of. I was not trying to say the Rats are better But in my wee world the were the best and opened the way no other band did
what happens when we get to 5,000 posts? Will each member of the Rats jump out of my computer screen and do a private gig .
I'm catching up more due to your lower activity than anything else.
You will stay the same when you hit 5000 posts as you have your own exclusive status
The biggest Geldof fan in the world, bar none!
I just get another coin. After 3000, the title stays as Back To Boomtown. Of course, if the Rats make another new record (not a compilation) then I will revise it.
Actually I just meant my waffle late last night! Usually my posts are pure quality obviously! But seriously need to post some more (I hear you all groaning) to catch up somehow. I will have to work very hard to even reach 1000! Private gig though - now that would be tempting ...
I'm still not bl00dy buying it! Last time Pete Briquette tweaked things was messing up the remasters. Maybe one day the first LP will get a proper re-release with the songs in the original order and Joey at the proper speed.
I didn't think it would be a game changer somehow!
Disappointed it's not the single mix.
Not a bad line up to be fair. But like yourself. And as I pointed out B4 I would love to see a hits album with the single mix of the song's and a hits album that just has the singles on it. Along with the B side's as a bonus
Even one of the ****est bands of the 80's[think it begins with spandau]have a single currently played constantly on the radio.Scared to put radio 2 on to be honest
Giving up seems a bit extreme. Arguably it is a bit of a swizz, but it's peanuts in the scheme of things. Most of us could drink the cost of the cd in an hour or two. There's no profiteering in the gig costs, which seem competitively priced to me and the live CDs were a real treat at what I paid for them.
You will get something physical if you do succumb, but like ArrGee says, you don't have to.

In the main, as long as you don't do the meet and greet. The ticket prices in the UK are quite reasonable; they are making some profit from the dates. The tickets are a couple of quid over comparable acts, but nothing untoward. And the Live CDs are one of the definite upsides of the reunion. Currently £6 each with the Rewind download. It's not The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.
I met Bob at Leicester and Middlewich for nowt. I met Simon and Garry at Bilston for zilch. All three were friendly, particularly Garry and Simon, who signed stuff without complaint.
For the years of immense pleasure this band has given me, I think I've had extraordinary value for money and won't begrudge the cost of a packet of fags on So Modern.

Agree, but have chosen not to bUy this time. Will save my cash and hope they release a DVD.
If there is anything different about this CD, then I'd probably get it. There doesn't seem to be enough to warrant me getting it. I didn't get the box set either. Whilst it would be a nice to have, very limited cash flow dictated that I saved the money towards tickets .
Costs more for a pack of fags. For me it is comparable to a bottle of vin ordinare, and on a night like this, I'd rather get pi$$ed.
Depends on the pack size and anyway, can't a man of your means do both?! You could get drunk and then not be too bothered that they forayed into TFAOS to pull Keep it Up on to So Modern
One of the pluses of So Modern is that V Deep and ITLG have been raided for some splendid early to mid 80s Rat tracks, and whilst Mondo Bongo has taken a rather mystifying complete by-pass this time round, the rebalancing is welcome.
Just need to extend the recalibration to live gigs. Dave would take little rehearsal after it was aired in respect to the subject matter a few years ago and Drag Me Down was always a concert pleaser. Bob remarked on Saturday Superstore in the mid 80s, that DMD was up there with Mondays in terms of audience approbation.
You lot know me,I will buy 10 copies.By the way House On Fire 12" mix is on the re issue of V Deep(along with the album version).I would love to get a single version of it on this latest best of.

I could, but any time I ever consider it I'll think that's another bottle of wine.
I dont play the CDs, I just rip them and then reorder back to the proper running order. Stuck all the albums on a mp3 CD in the right order and with the bonus tracks after the albums. I have pretty much stopped buying CDs anyway.

The one time you are amenable to another (piece of) red!
Guess this might just be the exact reason one of, if not the biggest Rats fan ever has given up. Keep the faith-It's a swindle.
I just spend my money on the gigs themselves. i see no reason to buy repackaged greatest hits cd's and I have not bothered with the live gig cd's either, even the Dublin ones.I couldn't be bothered with the Rewind downloads. Most of the t shirt's seem way to gaudy for me, so I just wouldn't bother.Where's Gok when you need him?
When I go to london it will be just the gig and a few pints and the memories. In that sense I am not being 'swindled', but marketing men and women have to justify their jobs somehow.
In the end no one has to buy cd's or merchandise that the don't want, or cannot afford.
I like the t shirts and bought one in Manchester which I wore to Birmingham last year
There were forum T shirts for the first festival dates as there weren't any "official" ones. I am too damn lazy to make new ones. But maybe something like this....
They are never of. Never of. No time to wait? Just another wee great wee cd to add to the rest of the best. Bring it on. Wrap your arms around it
I made a new CD for myself the other day. All the album tracks + Ratsh!t EP. Had to knock Cheerio and Episode #3 off due to space issues but got more or less everything else on in 320mps MP3 and in the right order. Will do the live ones next with all the non album tracks.

I don't think this is a great wee CD.
Good for you. Each to there own. Well I do think it's a great wee cd. How can it not be, it has all the hits on it, and some good album tracks. And for £4.99 how can you go wrong

Well cos I have all of it already. What's the point? More clutter?
Clutter? ! Boomtown Rats stuff? Never in a Million Years.
What's a fiver, that's too cheap?
Yeah have heard Rats songs called a few things over the years. But never that ha ha. I have everything going on the Rats ArrGee, more than likely just like yourself. For me it's just a wee Rat thing. I just need to have it. Come on just give it a little bit of love. You might even hear yourself singing along to the songs, and it's a good band photo. I'm sure you do not have that on the other LPs/Cds/tapes you might have?

I bet you don't have everything. Neither do I. But I have everything on this CD. And the photo is on Amazon. And bigger than the CD.
Na your wrong pal. And yes I do happen to have EVERYTHING that came out Even the Go Man Go single SO chill out be cool and stay free
I bet you don't have everything.
I do Regarding LPs singles tapes and cds.. But if it makes you feel happy I don't. I stand by the taken the P?ss line. But it's that Rats and no matter what they bring out I for one will always get it. Don't believe what you read

Be very scared. They have a one hour special on ITV this week and are doing a tour next year. They are playing The O2 on St. Patrick's night and for some reason I was sent a pre-sale link. I think I'll pass....

Are you sure it's not. Away and Home????????????????? Never in million years have I heard of this. Looks like your the one that's starting to take the p?ss now.

Ah, losing the argument now...
Google "At Home and Away Boomtown Rats"
Probably ain't got King Flower records, Peel session records, the fan club flexis either.
Still enjoy the CD of all the stuff you already have.

Well aren't you the lucky one. I'll sleep well tonight known this. U don't know me pal So don't talk out your back side
Your 100% right I take my hat of to you what a Guy. The specials Really Fu@kingsh@t band. Bootleg LPs maybe where you get your kicks from. But I have better things to buy. Like the real deal
All these greatest hits packages are aimed at the general listener, rather than the 'fanatic'. Personally I would not buy or downwload them because I already have all the songs. What's the point? I've never bought records or cd's just for the cover artwork, it's what's inside that matters.
Better to spend the money on a live gig. I think all the Rats are doing well enough without having to worry about them losing out on cd sales. It would be a different story if it was a new album or a new 4 track vinyl single, but not with stuff that most of us have bought multiple times.
Also it's more the record company than the band that promotes this material. Probably likewise with the 'meet and greet' situation, most likely this is a Live Nation way of making more money, and certainly not the bands idea. As that dreadful marketing line goes, giving 'added value'.

Great photos of the gigs Jules - but looks like they caught you in the 'rip off trap' clutching So Modern at Bournemouth?!
I didn't pay for it. I would have bought it for £3, but they had none in Sainsbury's. A certain member of this forum, who has been to a few more gigs than me, gifted it to me .
