Well I just bought tickets to see U2 on October 30th (Fri) in London. The Rats had better NOT be doing a date then. I will be mad. You can't sell the U2 tickets. Bet they do another one in Oxford that night
There are tickets advertised at £30. That will be £39 with the added fees. If you don't mind sitting on the M25 and cupping your ears to try hear them, then you could get those.
I 'queued' virtually for a mate in case he didn't get his Fleetwood Mac tickets earlier today. Couldn't believe the prices - started at £80, plus £10 per ticket for what appeared to be the privilege, then £3 transaction fee for good measure/a laugh (delete as applicable).
I for one am really glad the Rats never got into similar territory. Can't think of anything worse than paying so much for a ****e view in an aircraft hangar, or outdoors (no offence Jules). As mentioned by many on the 2nd time around thread, there's a real thrill to how personal the recent Rats tours have been. Watching some rock 'deity' just leaves me cold, no matter how good the catalogue.
p.s. I'll whisper it here, and possibly decrease font size, but standout gig by a mile for me this year was Carter USM 'final' show at Brixton about 10 days ago. £27, 26 tracks, energy from start to finish, didn't even mind numerous kicks in the head as crowd surfers passed overhead, or being suffocated against barrier with mush buried in APS security guy's armpit. Give me that over a sterile 'big' gig anyday
I absolutely prefer the more intimate gigs over these huge ones. Unfortunately, I can't get to see U2 any other way. It puts me off seeing them too many times, just the once instead of all 4 in London. Apart from the expense and the hassle of having to queue even more ridiculously early, it is the only vaguely affordable way of seeing them. I got there at 10 am last time and there was already a queue building. Some people had been there over night. Even I'm not that crazy. One group of stupid fans had stayed over night and they then drank beer all day in searing 90+ degrees, hardly ate. Made themselves very sick and had to go home!!!???? Why would you do that??? .
A seat would have been preferable for this, so no worries about queuing and I'd be able to see. However, for the middle block they would be £100 each, including fees. That's 3 Rats gigs, with some change, including fees.
The other obvious reason is there might be a Rats/U2 clash at that time of the year.

My favourite gig of 2014 was Franz Ferdinand at Somerset House. Lovely summer's evening in a courtyard and despite a crowd of over a couple of thousand it was pretty intimate as we weren't stood too far from the front.
To contradict the sterile big gig the other standout was Arcade Fire at Earls Court. When I arrived I was a bit disappointed to only have got just in front of the sound desk, but it turned out to be the ideal position to see both stages (there was a pop up stage behind the sound desk) and I was also beneath the glitterball that came down for the disco part. Add to that the streamers and it was a truly spectacular show. Far from sterile.
Been to a lot of good gigs so far this year with Kasabian to come tonight and possibly Chrissie Hynde next week.
October 30th (Fri) in London. The Rats had better NOT be doing a date then.
The following day Saturday 31st October 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the Rats first performance. Is it too much to expect they would play somewhere that night? Dublin, perhaps....
Bit surprising there were no gigs in Ireland this year.
Brilliant . Except he's coming to see U2 as well, so that doesn't help the tickets. I could make fake ID for myself and get one of those and sell the tickets on.

Is there absolutely no way to transfer tickets? I remember a friend couldn't make a gig once and got clearance for me to collect and try and sell the ticket. She had to send me a scan of her ID and credit card so obviously you would have to get someone you trust 100%!
I'm waiting for the U2 Dublin dates to be announced before using my codes. Last time round in Croker they had some really cheap tickets with an excellent view so hope they do that again in what I presume will be the 3arena since they are saying end of year for Dublin so too cold for out doors.

I find it hard to get into this band. They have had some good songs over the years. But apart from that, I don't get it, they just go over my head
I feel exactly the same. No offence, but I really honestly wouldn't go if someone paid for my ticket.
They have had their moments (Pride and New Years Day come to mind as superb songs). I did see them once on a complimentary ticket on the zooropa tour at Wembley. They were OK live, but the screens and light show were very distracting and took over. I'll download their free LPs and might even get one of the £30 tickets if they announce another date.
So you would spend 10 times the amount that So Modern would have cost you, to see U2 perform the songs you already heard on Zooropla?
I often pay bands to perform songs I have already heard when I go to their gigs. I paid 15 So Moderns for Kasabian last week so 10 So Moderns for U2 isn't that bad. That said it is always interesting when a band plays stuff I've never heard live.
I have to confess I spent over three So Moderns for Velvet Underground and Nico on vinyl yesterday and I already have the MP3s. I paid almost two So Moderns to see the Rats at Maida Vale on tube fares. Fortunately Melv was buying the beers, so they cost me no So Moderns at all.

Forked out 10 So Moderns (plus two So Modern booking fee) for U2 at The O2 today. Front row upstairs. Will bring binoculars, but pretty certain it won't sound any different than the 55 So Modern seats.
Now if only they could get the greatest Dublin band of all to support them...
I love the new currency . The 55 So Modern seats will just be nearer with a better view.
Did someone bang you on the head or something? Why did you buy tickets to see U2 .
I like a show, the tickets were cheap and it's near to work (one stop on the tube). Got The Who tickets just before Christmas for similar reasons, but that got postponed and will now be on a Sunday night I hate having to make any sort of effort to go to gigs. Just want to drop in on the way home and the closer the better. I was grumbling about getting home from Shoreditch the other night after seeing Julian Cope. Had to walk all the way to Liverpool Street to get the train six stops home.
I used to have an M25 rule, but it's starting to become a travelcard zone 2 one now. Only thing I am going to further out in next few months is a football game at Wembley.
That aside, living in London it is much easier for you to have a rule like that. It's a bit harder for the rest of us. We aren't too badly off in Oxford, in more recent years. The Stranglers make regular visits (seen them once) and the Rats have been. A regular visit from them would be good too.

In fact, the only time I plan to venture into Zone 1 again this year is to see The Who along with Kaiser Chiefs, Johnny Marr and Paul Wellhard(sic) in Hyde Park . Other than that nowt. Zone 1 is just for tourists
Evening trips to Cambridge were fun, but on neither occasion were the audience buzzing and it is the same show in London Zone 2 (with a far more enthusiastic crowd).
I may go to Ireland to see the Rats, but last time around I had booked a flight to Dublin along with a hotel room and still didn't go.
A trip to Cork in the summer for another twenty four hour party would be nice.
It's not a bad rule. I'll break it only for Manchester (best crowds, parents place nearby). Although might break it for Rebellion in Blackpool, home town pride and all that.
So Arrgee do you not plan to go to any of the carfest/ rewind gigs ?
No. Wouldn't go the Rewind ones under any circumstances (short set, cr@p line up). Not sure who is playing carfest.
I almost went to Chagstock (even had free tickets thanks to Ian & Tina), Chilfest and Vicar Street. I book hotel rooms and sometimes car hire and flights. Basically anything refundable. But as the dates approach, things crop up or I just think better of it.
The Butlins festival and Rebellion would be the ones I would go to as the line ups are very good. I did mention Butlins to Mrs. ArrGee, but the idea of an autumn weekend in Butlin's Skegness didn't go down well.
Should Pencil RAM turn out to be Glastonbury, I may go. Tickets are long gone, but there is another sale around April.

U2 are cheeky fcukers. Having charged me nearly £40 per ticket with all the fees, they are now selling "collector tickets" for a fiver! Apparently a collector ticket is a lanyard with a credit card sized plastic ticket on it.
@Jules - I know it is preaching to the converted, but make sure you arrive early for the floor standing on Friday. Apparently people missed the first half hour and more of the show on Monday despite being there an hour ahead of the performance. My plan is to turn up 5 minutes before and sit in the front row. Easy peasy!
Getting there around 10 am. Been told it was utter chaos.
Travel into London a nightmare. Left home at 11 am. Just on DLR now. If they tour again I'll be getting seats. They'll be at the back, but can turn up 5 mins before.

Dublin standing is ticketless so I hope they have these there! They scan our credit cards for entry to the venue.

All chaos has been sorted. We were 70th and 71st in queue. Guaranteed no pushers in allowed and we will get first dibs on the rail. They are letting only one pen for north and one for south at a time.
I was looking at swapping my cheap seats for standing tickets (as loads suddenly came available yesterday), but the queue situation put me off. That and no one wants the cheap seats!
Not a good swap. We are queuing indoors and we've taken seats. It's dry at least. Can wander off from the queue and use cafes if you wish. Time passing quickly.
Not such a seasoned U2 goer as a Rats goer. 8.30 am was early enough. I wonder what time no 1 got here . Overnight is banned.

I guess you only have to make the Rats queue about ten minutes before doors open.
8.30am! I could have waved to you when I arrived at work.
Just seven hours to wait now....
I could get to Dublin, be at the front to see the Rats and be back home in that time
They do quite a lot on the stage, but you can't see the main stage. If you somewhere in the middle you'll see both. Being tall, you can go back a bit.
If they did opta stats on the gig, it would have been Bono doing most yardage followed by me. I went to main stage on south at start, headed to mini stage when they had the intermission and back to main stage north at the end. The show is really good and despite the vastness of the arena you feel pretty close up and intimate. The songs are a mixed bunch. Some sections are really good, but others leave you drifting. Glad I went, but those in the seats and red zone must feel like suckers paying four or five times more than the herd. Fortunately being tall, I did see everything, All the fcuking iPads and mobile phones. Some cnut even used my head as a tripod! (well for about two seconds).
Did you start jumping up and down? Yes you're lucky being tall, anywhere down there is good. I couldn't see a thing when they were on the main stage, even when I moved back at the end it was impossible. A very good show indeed.

Nah, I didn't get that excited! Initially I stood by the barrier in front of the Red Zone (Suckers!) and there was a slight step up which gave me a really good view. After Sunday Bloody Sunday, headed for the toilets, and grabbed a beer (now that was good, guys walking around with beer on their backs serving you! But why £5.20, as if people have 20p to hand. When I came back out it was only five or six deep on the mini stage which was really up close. I didn't quite have Bono cos he was distracted by a blue haired tattooed girl on stage. Then as they left that stage, I drifted around and was back in front of the Red Zone again for the Joshua Tree/Unforgettable Fire trio at the end of the main set.
I have to say that that for such a big venue they did a show that meant a large number of the audience could actually see them at some point even if they were in the top tier. Lot better than when I saw them at Wembley many moons ago. Glad I sold my seats though, as it would have been a limited view of the edge of the screen (no pun intended, OK maybe it was). I did well out of the wheeling and dealing. I effectively got paid to go and see them!
Yep, sat with Noel Gallagher in the VIP seats. Maybe Noel asked Geldof if the Rats could warm up the crowd for him at the Albert Hall next month...
I've never liked Oasis. I wouldn't want the Rats playing second fiddle to that lot. That coat Geldof is wearing in the pic goes down as another of his fashion disasters.
Wonder how many of us on this forum would go for Blur or Oasis? Blur definitely for me. (think I'm about 20 years too late with this one)

Of course course correct answer to Blur or Oasis is Pulp ;)

Well they did at Latitude! When did Geldof actually dress halfway decently? I can't believe someone with two wives and four daughters has had so many bad outfits down the years. Once when I went to pick up my daughter from school in my white jeans which I miraculously managed to get into after some extreme dieting, she blanked me at the gate. When I got home, she begged me to never wear them again!
I like Blur and I like Oasis, so there's only one way to decide.... FIGHT!!! (or Pulp as I used to answer 20 years ago)
I can't do Oasis or Blur, clearly too old for that.
Bob was at the Monday night gig (second gig). Liam Gallagher sang with Bono. Glad I missed that duet. Would have been mortified if it was the other duet.

I don't particularly like his snakeskin suit. It's too light coloured- it doesn't show up well on stage. He does have a nice blue shirt that I like, and generally I like his dark pin striped look. Most of the time he looks cool enough, but then out of nowhere you get those awful photos in the newspapers, but that's probably true for most celebrities( and us mere mortals too).
I think Blur had the brains and Oasis the muscles. BTW Sheffields Baby Bird were pretty good. Some really good album tracks and singles and a really good song called I'm Too Handsome To Be Homeless, file under lost Britpop.
I don't like that snakeskin suit and think it's time for a change . I do love the blue suit he is now wearing for solo gigs. It's a gorgeous colour and nice and bright for stage. He has an interesting array of suits.
That brown coat is manky. Needs binning. However it does look like he has a nice suit under it. Snakeskin suit needs binning too.
Personally I don't care if no one gets up to perform with U2 when I see them in Dublin. I'm paying to see them.
20 years ago in the Blur v Oasis I was in team Oasis. Used to love their music but not as fond of it now. Never liked Blur, so yeah Pulp is a good reply there!

I'd go Pulp, then Blur and give Oasis a wide berth.
I like all of them. Not equally, but I have all their albums and most singles. Also similar for Suede, Dodgy, Kula Shaker, Bluetones and Supergrass. Pretty much every band from that era was superb, can't think of a bad one.
Just had a thought. U2 finish their tour on 28 November in Dublin. So all their kit will be mothballed until they go to the USA in May. I wonder if it would fit in the Olympia? You could have the Rats in the screen and on a small stage...

Now I do like Supergrass, but don't know the others too well. I'd give Blur a very wide berth. Bleurg... Oasis are dreadful, never did understand their popularity. Awful whiny singing.
I can't claim to be a huge fan - but I do like listening to Blur, Pulp and Oasis. Not an expert on their stuff but I do tend to like the vocals, lyrics and the guitars. However I've never really "got" U2 at all ...

I like U2. I like Pulp. I like Blur. I like Oasis. (oh oh time to go to facebook)
Now all of them can be a bit hit or miss, but they have all done some very good songs at points.
There are more important issues that urgently need addressing
Going to this gig Wednesday night. Can say I am looking forward to it But son got me the tickets So it will be good to be with him on the night. I do like some of U2s stuff But I just don't get the same buss as I do with the Rats

So you are looking forward to it. Dare I say it, even if you aren't much of a U2 fan, it is a really good arena show and well worth seeing.
If you are standing, then it is best to be at the main stage for the first 8 or so songs and then drift back to the mini stage for the mini set and then go back towards the main stage. Also don't go too close to the stage otherwise you miss all the visuals. Best rock show I ever saw at The O2, but I suppose there isn't much competition as I have only been there for three gigs
I liked being close up and personal at the e stage. However, I did lean back to see the visuals. IT wasn't that bad and later moved back.
I was very close to the e stage when I wondered over to it. Only had 3 people in front of me, but as all I could see was Larry Mullen's ar$e, I moved around a bit to where it was five deep (no pun intended) and then saw the Edge's ar$e while he played piano... The e stage didn't seem that popular the night I went.
