If you can drag yourself away from Comic Relief, then there are a couple of hours devoted to Irish Rock. Geldof provides the expected vox rock, and I suppose there is the chance of seeing the Rats in their pomp. I shall record it as I will be out with Royal Blood.
Good coverage of the rise of the Rats on this with Banana Republic, Looking after No 1 and Rat Trap all partly featured with subtitles to the songs so as to explain the raison d'etre for lyrical content.
Bob was also a talking head throughout (was that his living room?)
Some really positive comments from Sinead and Joseph O'Connor re the Rats all interspersed with Rats cuttings, a snippet from a live gig where part of Neon Heart was shown and a snippet from a '77 interview showing the very young looking Geldof and Moylett.
I watched it last night. It was good to see so much Rats, show their importance in the Irish music scene and air a variety of songs, albeit only snippets.
Hear hear. Really quite munificent of the BBC to recognise their significant contribution. As has been said before, the Rats opened the door, without which U2 would have had nothing to walk through. I think one contributor was maybe a little begrudging when he said 'rightly or wrongly' in respect of the Rats and their importance etc.
Noel from Dublin put it very well indeed elsewhere on here, when he said that sometimes a bit of distance is all that's needed.
Contrast that with the '83 TOTP special. I recall being indignant as a 16/17 year old that the Beeb had not given the Rats due prominence and unlike some 'lesser' acts as I saw it, only had a snippet of LANO played, not the full 3 mins or so.
