The Rats are on this Friday 31.7.15 Should play about 4 songs Plus talk about what's happening. If anything new is coming out. I am sure we will find out on this show
I cannot get RTE in northern England on my Sky HD box. Tried to add as a channel through Options and then says 'Not available' when hitting 'Select'. Looked promising for a moment....
I keep reading something else reg. availability outside Ireland:
An international exclusive, the The Imelda May Show will be available online around the world, via RTÉ Player International. The first show will be available from 9:35 pm (Irish time) on Friday, July 24 2015.
A lively mixture of chat and live performances, the show will be available exclusively for audiences abroad on RTÉ Player International, Irelands only bespoke multi-genre online Irish TV platform. The show features world renowned acts such as Kodaline, The Hot House Flowers, Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats, Lulu, Damien Dempsey, Marc Almond, The Coronas, Delorentos, and of course Imelda May and Band, as well as great emerging Irish and international music talent.
I consider myself as part of an audience abroad :) ... or is it my limited knowledge of the English language

Great show tonight Rats on fire Clockwork/Neon heart/Gonna do you in. and Rat trap with Imelda singing on Rat trap No talk of a new album just the 40th ann tour Imelda says at the end of the show go to rte1 iplayer for backstage update
You have to subscribe to watch on RTE player international. I found this very brief clip on YouTube: youtu.be/9yQfxfT7gyw Nothing else. Any other ideas?
You should be able to gets this Just type in Imelda may show rte and it should come up This is being repeated tonight on rte 1 after 11pm. Rat were really good She also had a guy on call mundy and have to say was pretty good
haven't seen the Imelda May show, but just looking at Geldof solo, and the Rats they will have played in total 28 gigs over the summer months , and that's just till September.
Think of all the travelling that involves for Geldof and the other band members. The idea of doing an autumn tour for the third year in a row seems a bit unlikely. Geldof is aware that it will be the Rats 40th anniversary since they played at Bolton St College in Dublin on Halloween night 1975, so maybe a once off gig to celebrate that might be on the cards. Somewhere like Dublin or London.
Most bands celebrate significant anniversaries with concerts, so let's hope the Rats do as well.
I played this again. My fault he just talked about it being the 40th ann of the band and touring with the band again and how good it was to be able to do this again

I would have thought that if there was any time to have a tour it would be off the back of forty years and a couple of high profile festival appearances, namely Latitude & Rebellion.
Given Vicar Street's availability on Halloween, it wouldn't surprise me that they did play. I suspect there may be a London date at some point given the attendances in the last couple of years, but as for the other cities, it will probably come down to how viable it is.
The tour, should it happen, would probably be short and sweet say five or six dates rather than the fifteen or so last time around.

Agree with you on this one. Do not see any reason as to why they would not do something for the 40 ann. Even if's it's a short tour Belfast Dublin and London. I know Belfast and Dublin would a sell out. London might be a different matter? Unless they all have other things doing

Roundhouse (3,300) and Forum (2,300) were both near enough at capacity, so I wouldn't see any issue. I suspect that after Cork, which had a capacity of 5,000 but wasn't quite full, these were the biggest Rat headlining shows since the 1980s. Troxy with a capacity of around 1,800 would sell out.

Cool, all we need is the date. I did this with a Sumsung TV and a Hard Drive and it works pretty well.
Saturday 5th would have been too much to ask for. .
You should be able to watch it when you are in Ireland on rte player. If someone has a pc, a hdmi lead, a modern tv and an external hard drive, I could record it in the pub.
I will be in Dublin, but as for having access to recording equipment... What time is it on? Maybe those of us meeting up for dinner can crowd into someone's hotel room to watch together. Mass Rat in.

Bad time, 11pm. Hard to imagine being in a hotel room watching TV at that time on a Saturday night in December in Dublin.
The only thing is you need a TV with a USB port and recording capability.
Looking at the RTE schedules series 1 episode 3 in on 14 nov, so if it follows the expected schedule that means...
21 Nov - series 1 episode 4 28 Nov - series 2 episode 1 5 Dec - series 2 episode 2 (Which is the one with The Rats on)
So if anyone can get access to a modern TV (e.g. Samsung) and stick a hard drive in the back then it can be recorded.
I of course arrive in Dublin the next day...
i can record it onto USB from my digital tv. I know how to make copies onto dvd's from a usb too, but that's about it. Just need reminding nearer date of show.

Just check it works on your USB device. Some memory sticks/cards aren't fast enough. I am using my old Sony Walkman (20GB - pathetic) which is working a treat as it has it's own battery powering the hard drive.
No need to make a DVD, just load the files up on mega.nz Probably best not to put it on You Tube.
I don't have that kind of money to spare and that will probably be very late for me, in Dublin or anywhere! Especially with the gig the next day, need to conserve the little energy I don't have.
I know a number of people who spend fortunes on their PCs/Macs and when they fail contact me to ask about recovering their data. I ask them if they backed it up and am met with a blank expression, yet for £30 (or less, other external drives are available) they could have saved all their photos, documents etc. Some people have spent £100s recovering the data off dead hard drives. Sadly it isn't always complete.
It's a device that can pay for itself. You can put pretty much every DVD and CD you have on it and sell them for 50p each on eBay to pay for it. I am so paranoid, I have three of them that I backup four different PCs on and I sometimes leave one in another house in case of fire.
Anyway, there's something for your Christmas present list! Ask Santa for the 2TB model which is £50
I have an external drive on my Mac, now. Having lost all my data, due to hard drive failure. You mean I could use that? Technophobe here...
Yes.
The only thing is that the TV may reformat the hard drive and erase the contents. It is a small risk, but given my paranoia about data I wouldn't take it, I'd just buy a new drive.
What you should do is copy everything from your hard drive back onto your PC/Mac, so you ensure you have two copies before you do anything. Also copy to a cloud drive if you can. The format the TV creates will normally be readable by the PC/MAC, so you can just use that going forward.
I have saved three PCs in the last couple of months. All were bricked and wouldn't run windows at all, but as I make everyone's PC dual boot with Linux I was able to get in, copy off all the data and get everything back. Hence very grateful relatives!
Top tip for PC owners - DO NOT INSTALL AVG, it fcuks up the Windows registry.

Hi Suss this is being repeated this sat 14/11/15 The Rats are on I have now set my NLT Or what ever they are called this day and age to tape this So if I can work out how to get this on dvd you are all more than welcome to have one
The singer-songwriter is joined in the studio by grammy-award winning artist Sinéad O'Connor, musician Hozier, rock-group the Strypes and singer Paul Brady for chat and live performances.
That makes two of us. I happened to turn over to RTE one the other day To see them on tv saying this will be showed sat 14th So have to wait and see I have set this up to be reordered, As for as I know a guy called Mundy on along with one or two other Dublin bands One of them is Imelda's cus
I am taping this tonight But hands up you might be right here about who's on. I am going to see if I can go back abit on this RTE catch up. But I will record one way or another IS that the name of a song?? ha ha
You might get this on iplayer. But this time round I was able to tape it. It was an hour long of the best bits of the show Rtas on singing and Geldof talking about them. Hint of an new album was said
On the new album, Bob's pretty clear he doesn't think anyone'd be interested, however much Imelda pushes it. I wouldn't be overly hopeful...
I suspect the sales of the Ratsh!t ep would give them some idea of how an album may fare. Geldof's reference to it did betray that it wasn't a particularly serious venture with the Rat/Boomtown titles.
The comparison with the Stones was interesting in that The Stones have made new albums, but obviously no one really wants to hear the new songs live, but then they are spending around £450/ticket, so they wouldn't expect to hear new stuff for that. Suede play their new album in its entirety, have an interval and then come back and do the hits which is a pretty good way of getting the new stuff heard. And as it only costs £30 to see them, people are quite willing to give the new stuff a listen. However, I doubt the Rats will follow suit as they only look likely to be doing festival sets in 2016.
Got it on my Mac. It doesn't seem as though they will be doing another album. Not sure if sales of best ofs would give us too much indication of how a new album would sell. People may already have the old stuff or just not bothered, but might by something new out of curiosity. I get what Imelda is saying there. You don't lose creativity and people want to hear something new in addition to all the classics.
How do new Stones albums sell? What about the new Bowie album? I've bought neither, but wouldn't rule them out, just don't have the spare cash to keep buying music.

The sales of the Ratsh!t ep and How to Decompose (sic) would probably give them some sort of idea of the likely interest, because to be honest they aren't going to be attracting many additional fans at this stage. For me, Geldof's most creative and prolific period was in the late seventies and aside from that, there hasn't been too much in the last thirty years. Even solo he has only done one album in the last 15 years, so if he hasn't lost his creativity it's safe to say it's something he's not bothered about.
Stones haven't made a new album since 2005, but it was #2 in UK and #3 in US. Doubtless any new album would probably do similar, but then they probably are the biggest Rock 'n' Roll band in the world. However I would bet a pretty penny that they played none of the tracks on their last tour. the only new song (post 1981) they played at Hyde Park was Doom and Gloom, which they stuck on their last hits compilation.
Bowie's last LP did pretty well in the current climate due to some canny marketing, and Blackstar looks set to follow it. It has helped that the title track is the theme from Last Panthers. No need to buy them, just stream them.

I don't see any reason as to why they would not do an LP After all Geldof' was still turning out solo albums without setting the world on fire

I see some reasons not to. Firstly, they may not have any good songs, secondly the general lack of interest, and thirdly it will cost them money. All well and good to record some Rat Boomtown songs to tack onto a compilation that people will buy for the other tracks, but quite a different proposition to make a new album whose sales are likely to be limited to die hard fans even if they had a dozen superb tracks on it. I suspect that going forward The Rats will just be doing festival dates and little else. And nothing wrong with that.

You could be right here. But look at the gigs the Rats do. Sold out? Go to a Geldof solo gig and ur lucky to get 300 at tops. If it has not been given the chop. But they have left a good body of work behind. I would say a lot of people would know of the 1st 3 Album. But not much about the last 3 Albums

My experiences are a little different. The London and Ireland dates sold out, but there was less than capacity at Cambridge Corn Exchange and I believe a similar story at other venues. As far as Geldof solo is concerned, only time I ever saw him it was a sell out, but yes by and large attendances can be low or non-existent due to the cancellation.
However, it is a whole world of difference selling out a gig when you play the hits and selling your latest LP. I am off to see Elvis Costello, The Stranglers and The Damned in the next few months, but I doubt I have bought any of their recordings in the last thirty years. I suspect any new Rats recordings would be greeted with the same apathy by most of those who have seen them in the last two or three years.
Bristol was pretty much sold out, at least the first time. Oxford near capacity. Bournemouth was packed first time, quieter the second... In my experience most have been at least very popular and busy, with one or two exceptions.
